Location: Luang Prabang, Loas
The Luang Prabang alms ceremony is one of the top tourist attractions in Laos. Unfortunately, the amount of rude tourists that attend the alms ceremony can completely ruin the experience. After a frustrating experience a couple days ago, Nate woke up early again in search of Luang Prabang's authentic alms ceremony.
Getting away from the main street completely transformed the experience! The alms ceremony on the main road feels more like a monk parade for the tourist. However, if you visit some of the side streets of Luang Prabang, you can still find some locals participating in the alms ceremony, and you'll avoid the hoards of tourists!

Overnight sleeper buses are great... you get a ride and save a night's hotel cost! I also love love loved the sleeper train from Bangkok to Penang... bottom bunk is a must because you get your own window and more space. Very comfy.
You guys have such a positive attitude towards travelling, respecting and learning about the authentic cultures of a place, its so refreshing to watch. Hope you'll get more subs. Happy belated birthday! Lotsa love from Malaysia.

That’s my home country, Laos. I went to visit it last year. It has been over 40 years since I went back. I have enjoyed watching all your videos. I see you guys are from Hendersonville,TN, me too. Love you guys.
My only out of country experience was a cruise at 24. In Belize, I met a cab driver and we rode around all day shopping, drinking beer, smoking cigars, i met his family at his home, held his child and had an open invitation to return! I cherish this day full of memories! He showed me parts of the country I never would have seen!!
You guys would always come up on my recommendation list, never really was interested in watching, and oh boy, i was so wrong!! Started watching your vlogs literally two days ago, and im fascinated! You guys are the most sweetest, genuine, adorable couple ever!! Your vlogs are amazing! I really enjoy watching them, I've seen so many beautiful places so far, that i might be able to visit anytime in my life, also i learned so much about Asia, asian culture, vlogs are pure perfection! That was so respectful of you to sit quietly and respectfully across the street. When I visited Luang Prabang I figured that I would find the tourists at the procession to be embarrasing so I used that excuse to justify my usual morning lethargy. On a sad note, one of the restaurant proprietors in Luang Prabang, an exceptionally industrious and hospitable young man, posted on Facebook yesterday that due to the coronavirus epidemic he was forced to close his restaurants and lay off his 42 employees. I could tell that his inability to keep things afloat for them was more painful for him than the hardship he will face himself

We are post covid lockdown now. I found Kara and Nate during that time, but ended up taking my children on our own "social distancing" adventure and didn't have much time to catch up. Now that I have a few weeks of "down time" before our next adventure, I am 100% neglecting my chores to binge watch old videos!! 🤣 I call it "R n' D" for my next adventure with my girls! I love sleeper bus! They are so common in Vietnam now so if you guys ever planned to travel city to city in vietnam, that is pretty much the main way to go!
I love the respect that you showed the monks and the authentic alm ceremony. I would feel disrespected if people were walking up to the alter during Mass to take pictures....
I was in Laos in 1996 and it wasn't possible to take a bus all the way from Vientiane to Luang Prabang so I took the local buses as far as I could and then rode in the back of a truck the rest of the way. I fell asleep on top of the bags of rice and slept like a baby. At the time there were no tourists in Luang Prabang, just a few hardened travelers, and the alms-giving to the monks was totally authentic. One of the other travelers was a guy that I'd traveled with in Venezuela and Colombia two years before and we just bumped into each other again halfway around the world. Stuff like that happened all the time when I was traveling.

I don’t know if you read this or if you already now it, but I saw your earlier video with the pretzel cafe, and pretzels are not Scandinavian, they are from Germany - but the pretzel is typically on a bakers sign (in Denmark at least), like a scissor is on a hairdresser sign, it’s just an easy way to show that it is a bakery 😊 🥨

Cooked. The offerings of rice, food, fruit etc. are meant to be eaten that day.

I’be been watching your amazing videos for weeks now. The growth of your travel experience and the increased ease of handling the challenges on your way is inspiring. Your cheerfully relaxed nature is magnetic. It is a pleasure watching you both discover the World and grow as individuals.
Nevertheless, often I get slightly annoyed that you Kara chew gum while talking and it lingers in the corners of your mouth when you smile. Instead of focusing on the story, I look at that piece of gum hiding behind your beautiful white teeth. Your videos appeal to a much wider audience than merely the US viewers. It is considered rather impolite to talk to people while chewing gum in many cultures around the world. Also, when yawning, at least in Europe, people cover their mouth. I want you to know that this criticism comes from a good place. Keep up the amazing story.
Monks are not allowed to eat anything unless it’s given to them. For that reason, Monks are not selective as to who gives them food. They collect and that’s their food for the entire day. It isn’t shared, nor is it separated. All foods in the alms bowl gets mixed together. The mixed foods, fruits, etc is part of the Monks training of separation from desire and coveting items of the world. The donators of food believe they earn better standing in the afterlife. The monks are grateful for any food given by anyone or they would not have enough food for that day. So, the monks are actually begging.
“Alms for the poor”
The Bible - God says if you don’t work, you don’t eat.

How do they get all those boys to be monks?
It's like sending your child to Bible study camp in the States, to some degree. Also, if someone in the family dies, male relatives will become monks for a few months to honor the dead.
Young men and boys become monks during funeral processes. Just FYI
