    Same problem rebuilding a Stihl FS85R with new piston, rings, pot, base gasket delete, muffler mod and new aftermarket carby. The new aftermarket carby was stuffed out of the box, even pulled it apart re-kitted it and still the same. Finally pulled a Stihl carby off a known working FS85 and BAM!!! it ran and tuned.

Then I got to looking at the new carb that had been put on previous to me getting the saw to work on. It was a Chinese brand carb. Not gonna give the brand. (Aftermarket). • @TheScoundrel70
    @TheScoundrel70 Před 2 lety +1

    I just had a strange one with a Husky 55. Very similar symptoms. I was getting random leaks around every one of the copper pipes going into the carb body, but they would come and go depending on whether the saw had run, cold start, warm day, cool evening, ... the most thermally temperamental glitch I've run across on any kind of engine. It would tune, then it wouldn't. It would idle, then it wouldn't. It would start, then it wouldn't. I ended up putting JB Weld around the base of every one, and it now seems to behave, but I have no confidence in how long before some other quirk presents itself, so I told the owner to watch for a donor saw, or buy a factory carb. The saw wasn't new to him so he was surprised to find out it wasn't a factory carb. He had a case of sticker shock seeing what a new carb would cost to put on his free saw.

    BTW, the symptoms are actually quite opposite but sound kinda the same. The saw seems to be more lean than on the rich side but has a distinct characteristic, besides loosing its tune constantly, it'll run fine for a while and you turn it off and set it down and guess what,? It will barely start or maybe not at all. Check yalls "Tank Vents" also on a crazy tuning problem like Tim just talked about to make sure it will let air Into the tank to replace the fuel that has been used. Some are hard to find but about all of them are a form of check valve. Mostly what is called a "duckbill valve". (a very small valve) It only let's air back into the tank one way. TIm, that was a Great video! I love watching your channel. I've learned a whole bunch on a whole bunch of different topics but I just had to tell about a similar problem I had that drove me Nuts! 🤪 I swore you were going to say the tank vent was stopped up as I watched the vid but you are Absolutely Right on "Afterbirth" parts! 👎 THEY SUCK!!!!! 🤮 TAKE CARE and I'LL SEE YA MY FRIEND!!!!!!!!🙏🏻🤚🏁💯😎👍

  • @sebastianleicht
    @sebastianleicht Před 3 lety +1

    That's my thought too. Some of them work, some of them leak. I found that there are surfaces on pump-side where the diaphragm is seated directly to the block are to rough as well as on the cylinder side. Sometimes they are not straight (or is it "plain" in englisch?) I always rip everyrging of and Sand that surfaces. Sometimes the threads of the H and L screw bores are (... 🤬...) than a drop of locktide fixed the issue (may work or not) in one case they drilled the thread for the fastening screw of the metering side cover so deep and in an angle, that they did hit one of the bores inside the carb so it sucked air there.
    Sometimes after cleaning them in sonic i found metalchips from drilling in the water. I dont like the aftermarket carbs and only work on them if there is no orig. available or a friend asks me for help (in that case it is a question of honor and i'm taking it as a competition 😇)
    Nice work tinman, I can't wait to see that saw ripping wood! Thanks for sharing!

    Just a few of the Problems I’ve experienced with aftermarket offshore carbs include:
    Throttle shaft bores drilled off center/oversized
    Jet bores drilled off center/oversized/undersized
    Casting porosity
    Jet screws not concentric/ screw threads on different centerline from point of adjustment screw
    Bent throttle shafts used in oversized throttle shaft bores
    And I’m sure there are more. If they make tuning an automotive engine unpleasant I’m sure that you chainsaws would be more sensitive to these issues. Just the findings of an old man rambling along.

    FWIW I have found it better to get cheap (Ebay, etc.) kits and rebuild carburetors (that have spent a long time working well) than to just get a new carb (often even than to get a "parts" OEM / dealer carburetor). Many times, for just an example, the metering side diaphragm has gone stiff (e.g. from alcohol in fuel) and all the other things about the carburetor (needle valves / "jet screws", etc.) will go right back to working fine. Basically these are just little cubes with a pump side and a metering side (and pump flaps that don't work at some point, and the screen that gets clogged with stuff that made it past the fuel filter somehow... I have even had a carb that clogged because there was a coating on the welch plug that softened, turned to goo and clogged the carb). Figuring out a carb that has been badly made, mis-drilled, hole in hole not centered properly, bits of metal leftovers, not-flat mating surfaces.... is -- to me -- a harder challenge than dis-assembly, cleaning, examination and install of distinctly serviceable parts (nothing 'questionable"... diaphragm stiff, but since you can't see a hole in it... or you doinked the spring putting in the lever that operates the needle... etc.)

    I have a 330 homelite that is in awesome condition! I found out why when I started disassembling it. It appeared that someone had broken off the end of a thread tap in one of the holes that mounted the carburetor to the manifold. It wouldn't allow one of the carburetor bolts to go down far enough to tighten one side causing an air leak! Some unfortunate customer bought the saw new and never got the chance to enjoy his purchase and got frustrated with it and threw it on the shelf and joined the hee man homelite haters club for the rest of his life! I have also seen where they ran a reemer bit into the bore of the carburetor and it smeared aluminum across the tops of the two holes on each side of the throttle plate that meter the vacuum for the low and high speed jets! And all they would have needed to do is do a little research and learn about the piece of equipment they owned. Enstead, I come along forty years later and since I have a bit of knowledge about chainsaws and carburetors get to enjoy the chainsaw that they worked there ass off for back in the seventies!And as fortunate as I am to own the collection I have of these vintage chainsaws, It saddens me to think that the poor man who happened to get the unit with a flaw right from the factory never enjoyed his purchase and was never a lover of that brand of chainsaw again im thinking.

    2. What would be a good saw to build/port/etc to run a 36" bar for felling and firewood? Looking for something that will take a beating.

    info: The clone carburators dont use high quality gaskets materials. They swill up or shrink thats why they are not relayable. Same with the rubber tubes, high quality is key here and to research those plastics had cost a fortune. Thats why there is a fabrication secret in makeing them.
    There is a very good reason for high price, quality runs.

    I use am carbs on some saws. They seem to get better with time oddly enough. My theory is that there is milling debris in them that needs to work itself out or somewhere, I have a few carbs now, 4 I think, that are cheap Chinese carps and all work quite well. Not at first but after a week or so they seem to sort themselves out...all of them. Really weird I know but my experience

    I tried an aftermarket carb when I built my 395xp and same thing, COULD NOT get it to tune. Spent the $130+ on the correct OEM and I got it tuned in minutes.

    The usual issue with these old oem carbs is leaking welsh plugs or bad main nozzle check valves. I put 385 carbs in ported 372's

    Bad carb body material ,the heating and cooling cycles shrink and expand the orifices in the carb so the settings are never the same.make the carb body out of 6160T6 or a better material. Hope that helps.great video thax.M

    Sounds alot like needle valve height trouble with that after market carb. Either the height needs to be played with /diagram is to weak or even meter lever spring is to weak.

    carburetors can be very straings sometimes.last week a get a saw,the customer says it would not idle. ok a test thesaw and tune it.it did run ok.next day the man coming back it would not work. well a did change the diapgram and clean the carburetor,still not working.then a did change the carburetor and works fine again.and this was pretty new husqvarna saw.

    could the aftermarket problem be poor quality diaphragm and pump gasket which may distort or stretch over night once fuel has been through it ?
