Maybe if she got rid of the roof rack her fuel economy would improve
surfinburdlax she says shes doing 1000km a week that's like 48,000km a year and it only cost her an extra $600 that's nothing but the roof rack a/c and hammer down. She is just mad that she over paid a new VW cost the dealer $10,000 then they put $3200 in PDI and delivery and overhead then there is a $5000 commission split 50/50 with the sales manger and sales person. So you wonder why your car is worth less than $10,000 a less than a year after you paid $18,500+ its because the car was only worth $10,000 to start and the rest was all commission $8500 in depreciation on commission save your self some $ buy used

On the labels in Canada that show mileage, they use miles per Imperial Gallon, meaning that 32MPG is not the same in Canada and the US (32 US MPG=7.3Litres/100km, 32 Imperial =8.82 Litres/100km). That said, officially in the US, the 2014 F-150 gets 21 mpg (11.2 Litres/100km, 25.2 Imperial), so a person would be using roughly 2.4 more litres per 100km than it's advertised
Removing that roof rack would be a good place to start...

How dumb would you have to be to think that fuel economy doesn't depend on how you drive. If you thought that than that's like saying if you sprinted everywhere, you would not be tired because it requires the same amount of energy as walking. I don't think dealers have to tell people that fuel economy depends on how you drive.

why would you suddenly look into what shoes you're wearing, how aerodynamic your clothing is, how good your water is.

On my civic i can get 600 km on one tank, but i can also get 400.

The fuel mileage you showed for the F150 on Ford's website was for the 4x2 3.7L single cab. Not the 3.5L twin turbo Ecoboost Supercrew which is rated at 16 L/100km city, and 11. 5L/100km highway. Considering you were testing the Ecoboost, the 12L/100km that you got in mixed driving is right as axvertised. A little research goes a long way.

Not quite, as I think you are looking at the updated, more accurate ratings. I'm an American so intuitively, MPG is easier for me to relate to than L/100km so I will be using MPG for my argument. CBC's screenshot shows a highway rating of 32 MPG. Let's assume the best and say that is, in fact, for the 3.7, which is marginally more efficient than the turbo 3.5. The US EPA states that for that year, make, and model, the highway MPG is a more realistic 23. The EPA also says that the turbo 3.5 model gets 22 highway. Extrapolating this 1-MPG difference to the Canadian 3.7 rating, we see that the 3.5 should be rated at about 31 MPG. Ford's overestimation would be laughable if it wasn't so misleading and I am very glad that Canada has clamped down on these overinflated fuel economy numbers.
MPG are much easier for Canadians to understand too - maybe I'm just too old at 43, but when I was in grade JK-6, we still had conversion tables on the back of every notebook we wrote in in school.

honestly, if you went out and drove no higher than the speed limit, you would quickly end up in an accident because you wouldnt keep up with the flow of traffic

should you get compensated? No, I don't believe you should. If saving a few pennies per mile is important to you turn off your AC, roll up your windows, maintain a constant 55 mph on the highway, avoid slowing down and speeding up, never accelerate while going uphill, don't haul around more fuel than you need (quarter tank will do), make sure your tire pressure stays slightly above recommended pressure for your tires, live at sea level, and accept that you will not match the numbers because the test is done in a lab and is there to compare it to other cars that are tested under the same unrealistic "perfect" conditions.
Good tips, but accelerating while going uphill is actually good for fuel economy if you don't downshift, because engine efficiency is highest at high load.

@@Jin88866 That is both correct and incorrect depending on the scenario. To address one of those scenarios: Yes, more.efficient to always be in high gear = low rpm and high load. But when going up and down hills on a highway it's much better to use momentum of a car already in motion and just maintain speed uphill or even reduce speed slightly for even better efficiency in moving the car regardless of engine efficiency. In other words why would you waste all that energy speeding up only to be counteracted by NOT ONLY aerodynamics and rolling friction of the tires against the ground but ALSO by climbing the hill. If you want to speed up just wait till you're rolling downhill and you wouldn't use as much fuel as you would speeding up on level ground and definitely not as much as you would speeding up uphill. Get it?
The fuel ratings are just numbers meant to compare vehicles..
If you REALLY want to save gas money there are methods. Hypermilers get better than advertized gas mileage just from over inflating the tires and some driving techniques.

Maybe if you doubled the pressure you would create uneven wear, but adding 20% won't have any drawbacks. I'd imagine your shocks would pay a price but the tires would be fine as long as you rotate them on a schedule.
And yes, driving techniques are important to saving gas as well. Like coasting and avoiding using the brakes as much as possible..

Well, snow tires are important for winter.. Again though, another 20% air pressure in a good winter tire won't have any negative drawbacks and will reduce rolling resistance.

My tires claimed 50k miles but I want to do burnouts constantly! I only got 5k miles, Shame on them. So they should adjust their stats so I feel warm and fuzzy inside and compensate me......... The rational of everyone on the show is just absurd. I can and do on a daily basis surpass the Mahony Sticker ratings for my vehicles by driving sensibly. I can also blow my gas tank in half the time by driving like an race car driver.
+sixtyfiveford Agreed, "your mileage may vary" ....the mantra from long ago...One can, & many do attain these published mileage values, depends entirely on HOW you drive....less so on what you drive. I find nothing more irritating than riding shotgun in someones car & it's either full throttle or full-on braking, nether is good for mileage nor the vehicle in general. These are the types who constantly complain about the poor quality of their cars, frequent breakdowns & such....& they don't even notice how poorly they drive!

Top Gear did a test of this where they put a Prius and a BMW M3 on the track with x amount of fuel in both. The Prius drove as fast as it could around the track and the BMW just had to keep up. The Prius ran out of fuel first.

There is a HUGE difference in mileage if you drive the speed limit, don't accelerate too quickly, look ahead and time lights so you don't race to a light just to start again. I've exceeded the stated mileage for every vehicle I have ever owner. It is also very important to have proper tire inflation, clean filters and fluid, tuneup and less weight in the car. Most people that complain have at least one of the mentioned above wrong with their car or they drive too fast/aggressive.
seriously, I haven't been driving long but ever since I started it was just like instant instinct for me to drive as efficiently as possible. Gets pretty annoying all the time seeing people race to lights, and especially when I just want to coast to my light but some hound behind me wants to race to it. You have to wonder if they're really that ignorant and don't realize the mileage thing or maybe their favourite activity is buying gas lol

I did my own test one day. Traveled 56 miles to a destination going 72mph on a highway got me 28.7 MPG, going the same distance travelling between 55-60mph got me about 31.3 MPG. Car is a 2012 Mazda 6 2.5L automatic. Nothing surprising here, but the difference in mileage was more than I expected honestly.
Hello, everyone. USA American right here and I’ve been watching a bunch of these CBC Marketplace episodes and I have a few observations:
1. Canadians are super incredibly nice
2. Even when Canadians are angry or “fighting” they are still being super nice
3. You all pronounce your words so cute!
4. Canadians seem to switch between SAE and metric frequently
5. I wish we in USA America had the same sorts of problems you all have in Canadia.

This is how you get better MPG
1) CLOSE windows (opened windows do more damage to MPG than AC). FACT.
2) Don't rev past 2.5k RPM. Lower revs, better MPG.
3) On hwy - turn on cruise control. The car will select the best gear with optimal MPG
4) Any aftermarket parts might increase air resistance (worse aerodynamics) and reduce MPG.
Heater and AC do decrease MPG (better than opened windows), as well as AWD.
Now, in regards to the video. The woman with VW has a freaking roof rack. That thing alone can EASILY add 1L/100km because it acts as an air brake (like on McLaren supercar).
Buy a manual so you'll learn how to drive. Cruize control? How lazy are you? I drove 8 hours in a manual no problem

Dad's 300C gets 22L/100km in the city and we're not complaining. Even though the stickers says 14.7L/100km. It has the HEMI V8.

Any car guy should know in the United States that cars are tested on pretty much a roller system and they rarely hit speeds above 55mph. The cars are never forced into stop start, up/down hill, highway, change in weather, weight load on the vehicle.
So when you see the window sticker MPG you should always +/- 1~5. Not only that take into consideration your foot. Heavier the foot, the more gas you're going to consume.

That’s the maximum possible MPG in perfect conditions.
If you drive a V8 like a grandma does in perfect conditions, you’ll be getting better MPG than taking a little 4 cylinder and driving like a maniac.
who buys a car based on the fuel economy? if all those tests were made in a lab, than all cars have the same result, means if u buy the car with the lowest fuel economy, u get the best car. nomatter if its 10% more, since all the others have 10% aswell..

+PandaWonka volkswagon didn't cheat because of fuel consumption its because of car exhaust and the woman with the vw jetta has a roof connection, which is not good for the aerodynamics and thus her car uses more fuel. If she would take that thing of she would get a better gas milage of at least 0,5 liters/100 km.
I do, but not going to argue that much in detail. However, there is a difference between 23 and 33 mpg.

I drive a 1996 Chevy Tahoe. 350, V-8. Auto, 4x4. I pull a 23 foot Terry travel trailer with it.
When I started I got 8 mpg pulling the trailer. 12 combined without.
I've added headers, K&N air filter, dualed of the exhaust with high performance mufflers. This allows the truck to breathe easier.
I also upgraded the distributor, cap and rotor to high performance ones.
I keep the tires at the proper pressure.
Now I get about 14mpg pulling the trailer and almost 20mpg not pulling it.
Sane driving helps tremendously, yet, when I need power or wanna play, it's a beast!

Here I am driving a rusty old 5 speed 96 sentra with blown rear shocks and bushings going bad cruising on the highway at 42 mpg with no cruise control and windows down.

I have a Prius and get about 54 MPG but I also do everything I can to maximize my gas mileage. I use an awesome program on my computer www.lonewolf-software.com/automotivewolf.htm to track my vehicle maintenance schedule, expenses, gas mileage and send me a reminder when any maintenance is due. This helps me remember to change the oil every 5K miles, rotate my tires and track the overall performance of my vehicle. Just keeping your oil and filters clean and tires in good shape will help gas mileage. I also use low resistance rolling tires which gives me a small improvement in MPG. I also go easy on the gas pedal when accelerating and coast when ever possible.
I use Automotive Wolf for my vehicles too. It's great software and definitely helps you to keep any vehicle in optimum running condition.

I was a Ford Car Salesman in Ca and I let customers know about the factory tests that determine MPG ratings and small kinks that could possibly improve fuel efficiency and that never stopped them from purchasing, so it's not going to ruin a sale by being honest.
You Canadians, just use the American EPA fuel mileage estimates. He got the advertised 19 MPG by the American EPA.
Canadian cars dont shop MPG, they show L/100km, so you cannot compare the american advertisements to your car

I love my 2006 mazda6, it gives me 28 mpg, but I have to really gentle with my gas, and have to notice lights from a distance, I have to keep my tire pressure within a certain numbers, but sometime I do like to drive fast, then it comes down to 25 to 23 mpg
If you think it was bad in traffic in Toronto, try sitting in traffic on the 405 Freeway in Los Angeles. It is jam packed.

I always get good fuel mileage on my RAV-4 when in Eco Mode. On the freeway usually about 7-8 L/100 km and on local roads usually 9-10 L/100 km. Usually lasts me a long time.

My dad's 04 Dodge Ram 1500 has a mileage of 14 city 18 highway but it has never changed since. My uncle bought a 2015 Nissan Frontier and it has a mileage of 14 city 18 highway. Ram : 5.7 Liter Hemi Magnum Frontier: 4.6 V6 Both 4 Door

While I get why some people might be mad, if you want to get those numbers, you have to change your driving habits. If you are hard on the gas, it doesn't matter if you drive a Prius or a Lamborghini. Top gear did a great test. They told a prius to drive as fast as it can around a track and told an M3 to just keep pace with the prius. The prius burnt more gas than the M3 because it was full throttle the entire time while the M3 was barely leaning on the throttle. Also, a/c or the windows down will impact it.
This like complaining that you didn't get the advertised 0-60 time when you have the A/C on, the windows rolled down, and you're towing a boat.

Well, if you look at the way people drive, it is nearly impossible to get the milage. The only time of the year that I cannot get the mileage that it says on the window sticker is during the winter or driving on mountainous areas. Most of the time, I get better milage. Don't be a rabbit and take of things that affect the aerodynamics.

cruise countrol actually saves a lot of fuel when either on the freeway or highway. Try to distribute the weight of the stuff you carry (mostly to the front) , inflate your tires to the recommended psi, give proper maintenence to the car and if the car comes equiped with the auto/start stop. use it, that thing alone will give you up to 10% more range on city.

Iv'e been told that when they test cars for comsumption that rear and passenger seats are not fitted. Also anything that adds weight is removed. Tyres are over inflated. Could this be true.
In the past 7 years I have two car that were identical a 2008 Nissan Altima Coupe SR and a 2012 Nissan Altima Coupe SR. The 2008 was totaled out due to flood damage and replaced by insurance company; both cars were new when purchased/replaced. Both were equipped with the same amenities except the 2012 had a slight front end redesign with the head lights and hood. Now I would conclude that the cars would get the same distance on a tank of gas with mixed driving, but to my surprise the 2008 was getting 650 miles to a tank (1046 km) and the 2012 is achieving 500 miles (805 km). What is the cause for the 150 mile (240 km) difference? I have had no change in driving habits or distances driven on a tank of gasoline.

I was able to beat the manufacturers claimed fuel efficiency in my '01 Honda Civic (28mpg city, 35 highway). I modified the car, cold air intake, headers, exhaust, chip, better wheels and tires, the average I usually got between fill-ups was 35-38mpg, but my record over a long road trip in the rocky mountains was 44.5mpg.
Last year I rented a 1/2 ton full size chevy pickup in Phoenix to drive to, and around, the Grand Canyon - 90% highway, but up and down mountains. I was amazed to get 27.5 MPG.
Have had a 2018 Buick Encore since it had 12 miles.If I remember correctly, EPA numbers are 28 city, 33 Hiway, 30 combined. It currently has 27,xxx miles, with MPG for all those miles - 36.8 - 20% higher than advertised.
A tremendous amount of mileage is based on driving habits. I bought the same exact vehicle for a daughter, and her aggregate MPG was 27.2 at 20,xxx miles

i2k Borrowed my aunts Prius, drove it for a week eraticaly acseeding speeds upto 160 kmt on small roads (paved) and in powermode all the time to get that extra response from the pedal. i would floor it out from standstill when the road was clear of traffic in an intersection (no traffic lights in my town) Drove about 800 km and it took me 1 week. result 35 liters of fuel about 75 dollars in gas money (i live in norway so its like 9 dollars a gallon). In other words dirt cheap.

Yes!I have a manual and when the gas light is on i can keep going.Manual is only good if you pay attention and learn. Seeing how many can't handle 2 pedals i see why manuals are leaving. I can't even drive an automatic, i feel out of control

It depends on how you drive as well, i have a very heavy foot so i'm above average at around ~ 12L / 100km in my Volvo S90. ~ 8L / 100km if i drive without a heavy foot.
I just bought a brand new 2019 VW Jetta, Rated at 40 mpg highway, 34 city. I don't do hardly any city driving, but doing the speed limit on the highway cruise set at 100 km/h It is getting more then its rated for, the car says its average is 44.8 mpg. I know they USED to be tested on the highway at 55 miles per hour (90km/h) not sure if thats still the case today.

True story, my 05 ody got almost 25 highway mpg fully loaded driving at an average of 85 mph (sometimes hitting 90+ sometimes) on a trip south to Florida. And it's supposed to get 21. Per tank for highway is 400 (miles). I got 484.7 (miles) pretty impressive right?

2011 chevy Silverado 5.3l V8, 6 speed automatic, 3.43 diffs, 245/70r17 at 38psi = 12.5l/100km (22.5 miles per imperial gallons) average. About half highway, half city. I don't know what is the advertised milleage (got the truck used), but I am pretty happy with it. I got it to 10.8l/100 once on a 3 hour highway trip at 100km/hours on cruise control.
I have a 2011 Cruze we drove from Thunder Bay to Winnipeg ( about 800km) plus drove around Winnipeg one tank of gas! Normally I can go two weeks on one tank just driving home to work and I have a 15/20 min drive to work.
My dad's Hyundai Galloper has had very little maintenance(untouched engine with manual transmission) for the last 15 years (bought new) and has 10-11 L/100Km witch is a lot for him since it did 8-9 L/100Km when it was new. Not bad for a 15K€ Diesel SUV.

My 2019 BMW X7 sticker says 25 mpg highway. I always got 28 to 32mpg. The thing is I always drive it in eco pro mode cruising under 70mph.
In the US we used to deal with outrageous claims of fuel economy, but today the EPA only allows realistic fuel economy to be posted on the vehicle sticker.
I recently drove a Nissan Rogue on about an hour long trip and averaged 36mpg. With about 40 minutes on the highway and the other 20 on suburban roads. I was quite impressed as the highway estimated mpg is 33 mpg and 26 city and on the highway I even hit around 40 at some points
My 2011 Honda is rated for 40mpg highway, I get between 30/35 on most trips(not just highway) I've never gotten much above that, but I'm happy with those numbers.
FYI to everyone the numbers on the Ford website that Market Place says the F150 gets is for the 3.7L V6 NOT ECOBOOST!!!!

I have never had a problem getting any of my cars to consume fuel at the Transport Canada rating. But then again, I also know how to drive. My Honda Accord is rated at 12.1 in the city and I usually get 11.5.
I drive my car with a very light foot and get exactly the mileage or close to. youre driving with a lead foot and brake abruptly instead of reading ahead and letting the car cruise when it can. not sure if they used a cover for the rear pickups, but its a significant benefit
Tips: if you have a manual always put it in the highest gear. 5th or 6th. If you have a car that is not older than 2010 when going downhill just realese the gas an use compression braking your car shuts off the fuel injection.

these mpg numbers are there for have a comparison between brands and models. MPGs always changes based on driving, weight, accessories (like the thule roof rack in that vw), altitude, road conditions, weather etc. it will be almost impossible come up with a accurate MPG. that's why all cars are given a mpg rating by driven in a treadmill with the same "conditions" so manufactures have a mpg estimate so the customers can use as a comparative purposes.
I own a 2013 Honda Insight (bought new) so its mileage has been consistent all along, beating the official number by approx. 2mpg (43 mpg vs 41 mpg combined) and I am not slouch driver so there you have it.
well its depend how you drive. for an example i used to share my car with my brother. when i drive it it shows 8 9 liter per 100/km. when he drives its quickly up at 13 14 liter. its depend on your driving performance too.
I usually drive 5 mph over the speed limit on local roads and at least 110 to 115 on the freeway. My average fuel mileage for my Toyota RAV-4 is 9.4 L/100 km combined, with 10.7 L/100 km in the city with 8.4 L/100 km on the freeway. I usually get around those numbers especially on the freeway when it's much lower at around 7.5 L/100 km. City driving I usually get it around 9.5 L/100 km. My RAV-4 is usually always good on gas and I have no problems. I've driven from Richmond Hill to London which is almost 2.5 hours away from each other and I was good on one tank of gas alone. It was almost empty but not to the point where it was a fraction of a second away from empty.

I have a Nissan qashque (how do you spell that) model J. Whit the enviromental Diesel in the manual it tells that it do 4,5L/100Km Im regulary on 4.4L/100Km sometimes 4.3L/100Km... get a Nisan instead of a ford.
