Tywin's not alone in being a "morally gray" character. It's Martin's style to not write pure "white hat" and "black hat" characters. The vast majority of characters are various shades of gray. Even the ones you hate have some redeeming qualities, and the ones you love have serious flaws and/or make horrible decisions. That's one of the things that makes this story so great. The people are "real", not "perfect".
What GOT does very well and what Tywin's character illustrates PERFECTLY....is just how dangerous impulsivity is in such a chaotic world.
Tywin is NEVER impulsive.
He is always thoughtful.
As we have seen so far, impulsivity can and does cause serious consequences....
-Cat taking Tyrion
-Joffrey beheading Ned
-Theon taking Winterfell
and many other examples so far.
Jaime raised some thought provoking points. It was his job as part of the King's guard to be honorable, loyal, and a defender of the weak. What happens when he is expected to fulfill one duty, but in doing so contradicts the other(s)?
Fair, but if that's the case, he would have done what he did much sooner when the king was killing innocent people early on. Instead, he waited until it was personal.
Jaime's job as part of the Kings Guard was to GUARD THE KING.....nothing else. Certainly not "defender of the weak". As a knight his duty was to defend the weak.
"I like Tywin". "I can respect Cersei." You're slipping towards joining #teamlannister Lipps 😂
hahahah NEVER!!! But never say never I guess 😂
@@LippsReacts Tywin is one of the greatest characters in GOT.
I love all the Lannisters....cept Lancel. 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
You deserve so much more views and subscribers! Your analysis of the characters and development is really interesting and on point. Out of all the reactions to GoT I have watched I really think I enjoy yours the most!
There is so much in what Jamie said to Catelyn that requires thought: Think about the fact that Jamie had to take the following vows to become a knight:
Protect the king.
Obey the king.
Obey your father.
Protect the innocent.
"But what if your father despises the king?"
"What if the king massacres the innocent?"
What would YOU do?
BTW: I am thoroughly enjoying your videos. Thank you for posting them!
Honour can be thought of as the combination of ones reputation and self-image as a "good" person, as well as the actions and behaviours one implements to cultivate and maintain that reputation.
You should definitely do more post-show comments/thoughts analysis....You are very good at that. You have a lot of very insightful thoughts and it is interesting to watch reactors working through things. 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Thank you!! I’m definitely trying to add more after each episode. I had a comment about it in Patreon so I’m giving myself more time to chat about the experience. I’m glad people are down for it too.

Glad to hear....because during the show it is always tough to really expand on your thoughts more than just reacting, since you have to pay attention in real time!
I really hate people that can’t keep their spoiler comments to themselves…
I've learned that there's a lot of people that seem to only think blatantly stating "x, y and z happens" are spoilers. They don't see how things like "you're gonna love so and so" and other comments that set expectations for characters or episodes, while not overt, are spoilery.
@@taneshah.1260 yeah that’s exactly the problem. It’s to the point that reactors shouldn’t even venture into the comments at all
@@taneshah.1260
Yeah they always do that....they think they are being clever by hinting as opposed to saying it out loud.
They are obsessed with ruining things....they derive a sick pleasure from it and they like it even more when people call them on it, so they can defend their "non-spoiling" with righteous indignation.
The Lannisters are perceived as villains of the story because the Starks were presented as protagonists but this doesn't hold upon closer examination. The Lannisters supported the new king for 17 years ("I'm half a kingdom in debt to his father", said Robert of Jaime Lannister) and made sure he remained unchallenged. The accusation they were plotting against him makes no sense as we saw Robert had no interest in ruling himself and the rest of the Council stayed firmly on the Lannister's side when he died.
The true villains of the story were the Starks who started a war no one needed on a misguided principle that a king should be succeeded by his own blood. The better principle is to have a king succeeded without strife, which Joffrey fulfilled better than anything Ned or Robb Stark wanted. The same goes for Daenerys, by the way, who wants to invade the place to take power by force with dragons. Good that the stupid lizards are gone. The Spice King was right about them.
Then we have Stannis who is also marching on to the capital with an army and keeps council with the priestess of some foreign cult we have seen imposed on his island. A prospect so unpleasant the old Maester killed himself to try and stop it.
"I should've been there"
To all of those that have watched HotD.....
I'm just realising this was said here
😮😮😮😮
Tywin is a great General. Unfortunately, he treats everything like a battle strategy. It makes him seem rather unfeeling, even if he is brilliant.
You're doing a great job!
Appreciate it!!
Ygritte truly is one of my favourite characters of the series 😜
She bores me...

she's a stage 5 clinger.
She was fun at first, though.
Don't listen to the people who had a tantrum because you didn't remember Varys. That's such a ridiculous thing to get upset about. You're doing great!
You are doing so great and I am LOVING your reactions! Looking forward to them every week!
Thank you so much!!
So many candidates for "A man without honor"... you'll find that many times the titles will have multiple meanings and/or imply multiple things (the "Golden crown" was one of these)... this is another one.
The only two women characters with seemingly happy marriages both lost their husbands. Do you think there's hope for the institution in this GOT world? Or do you
think the "fairy tale world" once envisioned by Sansa is gone forever?
Interesting question, I imagine the fairytale world is gone. Or shifted a great deal at the very least.
Honour is definitely (culturally and individually) subjective, but some traits seem to show up all over the world when honour is concerned. Loyalty, for instance. Thanks for another great reaction!
[Edit] Many of the traits you give Tywin are typical for psychopaths. They are often intelligent, charismatic, and calculating. That being said, I agree that Tywin doesn't fall entirely in the "dark" section of the light-dark spectrum. I'd argue that very few characters in the show are entirely light or dark.
Well, I’m not sure it’s fair to say that Joffrey is cruel like Jaime. Jaime is indifferent to many things / people and considers the end justifies the means. He’s capable of cruelty as a result but I don’t think he enjoys it and revels in it the way Joffrey does. Joffrey is a pure sadist. Jaime is not. He’s amoral, self-centered and addictively obsessed with his sister/lover.
Don't be fooled, Ygritte is looking for 6 inches of Snow
0:30 many girls do😂
So tell me what you think about Vegas......😂😂
Ey vato, his name is Vargas holmes
Sansa coulda just stayed in bed till Shae got there. She didn't need to go waving her bloody sheets around for everyone to see.
To be fair, she was kinda freaking out, having just woken up from a horrible nightmare, only to find a different nightmare upon waking.
