I recently asked my grandmother about her stories/things from her perspective. A lot of pain, but a whole lot of strength.

As a first generation lao born in America growing up I knew I couldn’t be the A+ student my family wanted me to be and I had the knowledge to become that person but as everyone know America is not all sun shine and roses and growing up here prejudice and racism is very much alive some Asians look down on Asians that gangbang saying why we talk ghetto or why we trying to be black but if you grow up in an environment where you are targeted and bullied you will react and defend your people, our culture came from a race of warriors so adapting to the environment was not an issue for our people, southeast Asians came to America around the early 80s and that’s less then 50 years but every city we are in we are respected, we built our rep through the years and it shows, look in California the Bay Area has mainly high class East Asian and a lot of the Asian hate going on from COVID-19 happens there but on the other hand in the Central Valley of California there is zero to none Asian hate going on not saying it don’t happen but it is very unlikely to be a hate crime here, if it dose happen it’s a robbery not just cuz of their skin color but that being said the Central Valley has a high population of southeast Asians. Long story short I’m humbled for our people and how we survived and still going through it, this is just a perspective of a first generation Lao American born point of view

My dad told me stories when I was a kid. I have never heard any other Lao person tell the same story and thought I'm never going to hear them again and I don't know what it was called. My favorite one was about two birds. His family died in a fire waiting for him because he told them not to leave and he would be back but he never made it back. The mama bird held her grudge to her next life and vowed to never trust or love a man again. They were humans in their next life and long story short he won her love back and was able to remember and explain that he didn't abandon them. I left out so many details but I just loved that story it was so sad but had a happy ending.

That birds tale is called Prasappasith Chadok in thailand.
It is the 40th tale in the collection of 50 tales called Panyasa Jataka.

I think a severe challenge for storytellers in a digital age is that it requires longer attention spans and more human physical connection, things that are clearly challenging the future of human societies. Thank you for this gift!

Sometimes telling the story is reliving it and it can be painful. And most people avoid telling their stories and focus on something that is less emotional.

I completely agree. I also think it's even harder as Asians due to our personality traits and culture.

I think telling your story serves a purpose. It keeps your legency alive for our future generations that will eventually forget where their grandparents and parents came from to give you the life you have now. What we had to suffer to give you your freedom. I tell me kids all the time...never forget your roots !
