    This video is a really quick look at how you can use your Trezor (or any hardware wallet really, like a Ledger or Keepkey) with alternative wallet software. This video quickly looks at how to connect your hardware wallet with Trezor Suite, Exodus, Shapeshift and the current Trezor web wallet. This is useful to know if you are having trouble finding crypto between different wallets as well as what you can do if you need an alternative to use if vendor software is online, or if you want access to better privacy or security features.

    If you are new to Crypto, my suggestion is that you start with buying ~$150 worth of Bitcoin, Ethereum, Litecoin @ Coinbase and get familiar with storing it, moving it around, etc.
    For your first purcahse, just stick with CoinBase: www.coinbase.com/join/5691c9d...
    For Trading, just start with Binance: www.binance.com/?ref=18111926
    By sticking with large, reputable exchanges for your first purchase (Coinbase) and first trade (Binance) you can avoid getting scammed right at the start by purchasing a non-existing coin off a scammy exchange. (You would be surprised how many people fall into this trap)
    Don't have a hardware wallet?
    Be safe and buy them direct from the manufacturer. (Not just through some random on eBay, Amazon, etc)
    Get a Ledger: shop.ledger.com/?r=5243ecbb84...
    (If you are just starting out, I would just recommend a Ledger Nano S)

    Thank you yet again for a great informative vid. Just a couple of questions if I may. Why is it that the Trezor Model T has a 12 word recovery phrase as opposed to Trezor One that has a 24 word seed phrase? Does this make the Trezor Model T less secure? Is there a way to change Trezor Model T from a 12 to 24 word seed? Cheers.

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  Před 3 lety +3

      It's just a user experience choice from the Trezor team and has a few implications. Firstly, a 12 word seed can be easily brute-force descrambled, so don't use seed scrambling as a means to secure your backup... Use a BIP39 passphrase... Secondly, the error checking it's 12 word seeds is very weak, you can pick any random 12 BIP 39 words and there is a 1/16 chance that it will have a valid checksum, as opposed to 1/256 for a 24 word seed. What this means is that you need to take the time to fully verify your seed backup using recovery check, as the Trezor T onboarding only has you check 4/12 of the words... (Totally inadequate, especially when combined with the weaker checksum)
      That said, if you are aware of those two things, a 12 word seed is fine. You can also initialize a Trezor T with 24 words either from the command line or via Electrum. (You can't "convert" an existing seed)

    What happens if the derivations path is not the same? And also if some doent support change adress? (or put in an other change adress?)

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  Před 3 lety +2

      In terms of derivation path, it is worth checking over at walletsrecovery.org/ if you are trying to do something exotic with a wallet like Wasabi. If you use a wallet that uses different derivation paths, you will just see either none of your balance or only part of it. (Just like what happens in this video with the different handling of Bitcoin address types)
      That said, mainstream wallets like the official Trezor wallets, Exodus, Shapeshift, etc, follow standards in this regard and also don't allow users to even enter custom derivation paths. In terms of change, decent hardware wallets are actually have constraints around what they will accept as a change address based on what is allowed within BIP44. Typically your hardware wallet doesn't display the change address once it has been validated and any change address that belongs to someone else will be displayed as a 2nd output. (So you would be asked to confirm the two ouputs, even though in your malicious wallet you only requested one) Hardware wallet vendors are also clamping down on the derivation paths that they will even allow the device to use, throwing a warning to the user if you are doing something really non-standard. (A warning that you can suppress using the command line tools if you like)
      The way that standards are enforced like this is actually a powerful feature in that for crappy software wallets (like Atomic) they can just ignore standards entirely and the users are none the wiser until something goes wrong. If a software wallet tries to ignore standards entirely, it will simply not work with a hardware wallet...

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  Před 3 lety +2

      No, Exodus will only display the cryptos supported by the specific Trezor you are using. (So Trezor One doesn't support ADA, while Trezor T does)

    • @cnotee421
      @cnotee421 Před 3 lety

      @@CryptoGuide Thank you. Does Trezor typically roll out support to all their models in the long run? Or do they usually keep it segmented so people will buy the T? I just picked up my Trezor =( So if I wanted ADA, I'd have to store it on a software wallet somewhere?

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  Před 3 lety +2

      The design of Trezor wallets are that all supported cryptos must be supported by the single firmware that runs on a given Trezor. (So Trezor T vs Trezor One) This means that there isn't the same ability for an older device to support a wide range of newer cryptos while still supporting all the existing ones. (So the Trezor One is unlikely to ever support things like ADA) This is very different to the approach that Ledger have taken where they have a more modular firmware and you only install what you need. This is why a Nano S can support all the latest stuff like DOT/ADA/etc even though it's older than the Trezor T.

      @@CryptoGuide Okay. There's lot of coins what trezor doesn't support, but for security it's great!

      If you want wide coin support the you should probably just get a Ledger

    Trezor suite doesn't work on android smartphones or tablets the bridge won't be recognised so out side of btc it pretty useless unless to have a pc or laptop which many don't.

      Trezor suite does actually work via webusb so you can use it on Android that way.
      That said, Ledger mobile support is far better than Trezor...

      @@CryptoGuide I will take a look into that. I was concerned about ledger as there were some security issues not that long ago I'd still use one it just that I already have a Trezor.

      The customer data leak doesn't relate to the devices themselves.
      If you already have a Trezor and you have an Android phone, you can use the browser based Trezor suite via webusb.

      Some people prefer the interface of exodus, others will want the non-custodial exchange functionality of shapeshift. Other still will want the privacy benefits, power features and decreased trust of using something like Sparrow.

    • @CryptoGuide
      @CryptoGuide  Před rokem

      Well yea they are advanced features, most folk will just stick with the basic stuff that the vendor software let's you do. Trezor doesn't really give you any insight into smart contracts regardless of which software you use.
      Basically it lets you do stuff like multisig like I demo on the Casa videos.
