Inspired by the 1988 classic “Red Storm Rising”, command a nuclear submarine in a desperate attempt to prevent “mutually assured destruction” when the Cold War gets hot and WWIII begins.
You will be tasked with intercepting convoys, amphibious landings, insertion missions and battling it out with enemy warships, submarines and aircraft. Thankfully, an arsenal of wire-guided torpedoes, anti-ship and cruise missiles and the occasional SEAL team are on board to keep the Iron Curtain at bay.

BTW take a look at a pic Tico class cruiser in the 1980s early 1990s and see where they moved the SQL 32(V)3. Why? Its just stupid to think an Iowa could sail up to a Kirov without being detected. Its totally unrealistic and not only that, the inability of battleships to get within gun range (even in wwii!!) without excessive risk was the very reason battleships were abandoned in the first place!
Battleships are cool, but obsolete. They would never get within range of a modern ship like the Kirov without being detected and likely hit by dozens of anti ship missiles, and rendered a mission kill at best

    • @Tom--Ace
      @Tom--Ace Před 2 lety +5

@@CRAZYHORSE19682003 no matter which way you stack it (lone Kirov vs lone Iowa, totally unrealistic, or fleet centred around Kirov and fleet centred around Iowa), the Kirov would always detect the Iowa far outside of gun range and while in a fleet vs fleet situation frigates may well hit the Kirov (it's uncertain who would win, although Kirov would have a huge advantage over ordinary missile frigates), the matter would be decided before the Iowa ever got involved and it would be essentially useless.
The Iowa isn't a ship that's useful for matching up against the Kirov or modern missile frigates, which would always detect her well outside of gun range and would smash her to bits with missiles before she ever got into gun range (mission kill at the least, with all radars dead).
Battleships are cool, but modern naval battles centre around missile and aircraft carrying ships like frigates, Kirov and most importantly, aircraft carriers.
The Iowa in reality would likely sail with an aircraft carrier group, which would likely beat the Kirov battle group, and the only contribution of the Iowa to the battle would be shore bombardment and CWIS for incoming missiles

You're activating your missiles way too late and they're going active after the enemy starts evading, acquiring the chaff instead of the ship. They have a seeker range of like 15km, pull those markers wayyyyyyy back. They're not like torpedoes.
Edit: you're also launching chaff at full speed and outrunning the cloud. Slow down to ≤10kts to hide in the chaff cloud and turn to unmask your CIWS when going defensive. Phalanx sucks at intercepting the huge Soviet AShMs, and with a vessel without a SAM system(s) like the Iowa, you need to work your guns and chaff much harder than normal to avoid being hit.

@@jayjay53313 The Marines loved those guns for their primary mission of amphibious assault, but that love hadn't saved the Iowas from being retired on multiple prior occasions. No, what revived the Iowas was the Kirovs. The Iowas were not an exact mach for these Soviet "battlecruisers" but the political and PR pressure to match and counter these new Soviet monsters (which were well over twice the size of the Ticoconderoga cruisers) was intense, especially with the cancellation of the roughly Kirov-comparable Strike Cruiser concept.

@@IrishCarney the BBG revival came before Kirov battlecruiser enters service. There was need for artillery guns for beach landing when US predicted there will be war campaign in Middle East that might need battleship to secure beach head for amphibious assault. The battleships were later phased our when there's no more such war & there's no need for it plus it guzzles fuel with poor range. Kirov VLS inspired US to refit later Ticonderoga class cruisers that entered service with VLS replacing the impractical racks launcher for TLAM.

      late reply but..not quite.
battleships were built in a totally different mindset then what ships are today.
modern ships today are lightweight, rapidly produced vessles made to duke it out over hundreds of miles
battleships were made to fight in practically close quarters and made to take hits and keep fighting.
the only real modern system that they're totally fucked against are modern torpedos since those are back breakers
however...because battleships were made to protect against practically slinging bunker busters around, they have armor that simply isnt seen anymore.
modern ships are practically all made out of shell plating which, modern weapons are made to combat against.
hence why most modern missles are impact fused and not really made to go through 12 inches of side armor, and if its a deck attack, it has to go through a few decks thats even specfically made for that..
hence the bomb deck, 4.75" armored deck and the splinter deck
      now, are they invulnerable? no.
any boat that gets hit with 1000lb explosive payload is going to have a bad day,
but compared to modern ships where a single successful hit practically dooms the ship, a hit on a iowa would more then likely just be a combat knockout and could make it home to be repaired. or keep fighting if it has to, if anythings in range of its guns that is.

Had the Bismarck survived until the end of the war, it's a certainty that the Germans would have been continuously upgrading her with more modern and advanced systems as the war drew on. A hypothetical 1945 Bismarck with new gadgets and technology would have been a formidable adversary provided there were no aircraft around, which were the bane of any large surface ship in that conflict. Even in 1940, she was more than a match for anything afloat. In addition to being a war of attrition, WW2 was really just one giant arms race, and the Germans were no slouches in developing useful and innovative goodies. By 1943-44, however, they had begun to suffer in terms of logistics and production in a big way. What cannot be refuted is that their optics and naval gunnery were devastatingly accurate.

The Kirov would just have to stay out of the range of the Iowa's guns and it's anti air defenses should be able to take down most missles that the Iowa would fire at it. Although I'm confident many modern surface ships would destroy an Iowa, by just bombarding it with missiles from beyond visual range, well out of range of the Iowa's guns. An Arliegh Burke destroyer could do kill an Iowa. Unless for whatever reason the US Navy decides to super fit the old battleships with modern weapons lmao

We often severely underestimate fast battleships like that. They were designed to absorb torpedo hits and heavy shells while continuing to function, and they were fast enough to keep up with a carrier fleet in operating in excess of 30 knots. They were also updated to have competent electronics for the age, and the refit also cost less than buying a new frigate.
A Granite is only the equivalent of a 15" HE shell, but without the specialised naval shell design or velocities to deal noticeable damage to a super dreadnought, which meant no mortal damage could be dealt. They were big, but they could deliver barely more than a full salvo from HMS Agincourt in the WW1 era. Advanced torpedoes of the cold war were also unlikely to have warheads big enough to disable a battleship with a single salvo
At that displacement, they could also carry a huge amount of missile armament. The real problem was that such power was excessive, and the massive crew she needed cost too much money to upkeep

I'm sorry but in a battle where an Iowa somehow magically spawns in gun range of a Kirov it's not even a contest and the Iowa will steamroll the Kirov every time. It only takes one solid hit from a 16 inch shell to completely ruin the Kirov's day and although the Kirov could cripple the Iowa with solid hits we must remember that it is an armoured battleship and is designed to take hits. Of course there is no realistic scenario where an Iowa *gets* into gun range of a Kirov before sustaining mission-killing levels of damage, but if it were teleported to within a reasonable range the Kirov is not going to survive.
