  • Joint press statements by NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg with the President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev, 17 March 2024.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg arrived in Baku on Sunday 17 March 2024, kicking off a three-day, tri-nation tour of the South Caucasus. Meeting with President Ilham Aliyev, the Secretary General welcomed Azerbaijan’s long-standing collaboration with the Alliance, saying he looked forward to further strengthening the partnership.
Mr Stoltenberg welcomed the opportunity to discuss energy security, saying: “energy matters for our security and I welcome that Azerbaijan is developing closer and closer ties with several NATO Allies.” He further pointed to a track record of work on issues of mutual concern and thanked Azerbaijan for its contributions to NATO-led operations and missions - including in Kosovo and Afghanistan - since Azerbaijan joined NATO’s Partnership for Peace in 1994. The Alliance and Baku have also cooperated through NATO’s Science for Peace and Security programme on counter-terrorism and cyber security.
On the situation in the South Caucasus, the Secretary General underlined that “peace and stability is not only important here but for security more broadly”. He said: “Armenia and Azerbaijan now have an opportunity to achieve an enduring peace after years of conflict.” He added: “I can just encourage you to seize this opportunity to reach a lasting peace agreement with Armenia”. On Ukraine, Mr Stoltenberg welcomed the much-needed support provided by Azerbaijan, and called on all countries in the region to step up: “more support is needed because the situation in Ukraine is extremely difficult.”
The Secretary General called the upcoming COP29 global climate summit in Azerbaijan an important milestone: “It is important for everyone concerned about climate change but also important for our security because those issues are closely interlinked.”
On Monday, the Secretary General will meet Foreign Minister Jeyhun Bayramov and Defence Minister Colonel-General Zakir Hasanov. He will then travel to Tbilisi for meetings with Georgia’s leadership. On Tuesday, Mr Stoltenberg will meet with Armenia’s leadership in Yerevan.

His mom and dad sent him to an English school when he was going through grade school years. Or, even if he's from a poorer background, he knew earlier on that English was the ONE THING that would, all things being equal, accelerate his path way to the top.
Many leaders from around the world who envisioned having to work with Westerners ... learn English when they're in position to do so... because, again, they knew if they're prepared --- in whatever field they go into (politics, engineering, teaching, research, etc), IN ADDITION TO LEARNING ENGLISH --- that they would be able to move up the ladder of success much easier (in their own country).... because, inevitably, some of their bosses earlier on in their lives would want to know, among the many young/ambitious working under them ....
"Okay, who, among you, speak English? I need someone to speak to my American contacts," etc., etc.

It's quite standard for world leaders and high-ranking officials to be fluent in English, as it's commonly used in international diplomacy and communication. President Ilham Aliyev's proficiency in English reflects the global norms and practices among leaders to engage effectively on the world stage. It's not surprising but rather expected, as it facilitates dialogue and cooperation across nations.

*Just like their common neighbour 🇬🇪Georgia, I really feel it would be GREAT for both 🇦🇲Armenia & 🇦🇿Azerbaijan as if they can apply for NATO membership as they’re Western oriented & Secular Democracies, will really be focused into development & mutual cooperation 🤝 rather than fighting between themselves over Artsakh/ Nagorno Karabakh as they're already in NATO's 'Partnership for Peace' - just like their neighbour 🇬🇪Georgia has been applying since 2008 (& already been accepted to invited later)!*
As an example, 🇬🇷Greece has had tensions with its neighbours like 🇦🇱Albania, 🇲🇰North Macedonia & 🇹🇷Türkiye - but because they’re in the EU/ NATO, they have never become full conflicts in recent history. (Unlike post-Soviet 🇷🇺Russia-🇧🇾Belarus-🇺🇦Ukraine-🇲🇩Moldova-🇬🇪Georgia which are currently members of neither and have been in conflict in recent times).

Nations and people intimately know if you're in strong alliances, you're stronger and safer. Alliances also have less conflict (even mortal enemies like Turkey and Greece) and when they have them, other partners step in, asking both to make concessions....
After all, why would the older partners want individual states who DON'T or CAN'T make concessions and/or compromises, in hard situations?
If you (or people who are representing) are not willing or able to listen to your other partners --- especially the bigger, more powerful, or founding alliance members --- and make hard bargained for compromises.... for the good of the WHOLE team.... how would those allies know YOU would fight or die with them, when a powerful outside force/country/people threaten them?
This is why countries like the US, France, Britain, Germany, Japan, South Korea, Australia, Canada, Norway, Spain, etc. WILL WIN, should they go to war with Russia or China, who also are very powerful but who LACK such credible MULTI-NATIONAL alliance networking... with other technologically advanced, rich, and powerful allying countries who are willing and able to come to FIGHT AND DIE with them, in a war involving just ONE of them...
In today's world, no matter how big or powerful you are (say you're China or Russia, with very deadly military capabilities), if you're fighting war on your own, it's like you're saying, as a CHESS MASTER, "I am so good, nobody and no MACHINE is gonna beat me."
      It ain't so.
MACHINES (or ALLIANCES) --- the combined brain power of many other master chess players working with world class computer scientists and programmers ---- WILL BEAT YOU... because you're alone and they work as a TEAM, with many world class chess players, computer programmers, historians, tacticians, etc.
And the REASON why Russia and China CAN NEVER come to a defense alliance like NATO, etc. is that they are BOTH autocratic/authoritarian nations and people. NO CHINESE and NO RUSSIAN, leader and citizen, is going to WANT TO go to the other people country and DIE for them, with them.... because it is not in the nature of AUTOCRATIC/AUTHORITARIAN people and societies to do so.
They may form TEMPORARY alliances OUT OF CONVENIENCE, for brief times.... like what Italy, Germany, and Japan did... but eventually, again, alliances formed by AUTOCRATIC/AUTHORITARIAN people and countries can't last & won't last... because NONE of them is willing to make COMPROMISES on fundamental ways of thinking and doing things.
To be a part of NATO or any other similar global or regional organization, for example, you (as a country) MUST amend you national laws... to ensure how you do things (business, military, government, education, scientific research, etc) is COMPATIBLE with what other members do those same things.
Again, are CHINA, RUSSIA, North Korea, India, Iran, Brazil or South Africa --- the 5 to 7 MORE tolerant, more democratic, more freedom loving CORE NATIONS that are ALWAYS talking about schemes to unsettle the West, to topple the Dollar, to form a system different from and superior to SWIFT, the World Bank, IMF, etc.... to get away from the Evil Western European types, etc ---- are THESE NATIONS willing and/or able to CHANGE their LAWS, their various regulations, their various military structures, etc., to be more similar to the other friends and partners laws and regulations?
      No!
So, China, Russia, India, South Africa, Cuba, North Korea, Iran, etc. CAN NEVER BE TRUE PARTNERS... not in business & commerce, not in military standardization, not in political & governance structures, not in civil and penal laws, etc.

      🇩🇪

Azerbaijan is an ancient and great country, with a history and culture worth highlighting.
It belonged for many years to the Turkish Kingdom and then to Tsarist Russia until after many years it separated from the USSR.
Although it has a population of majority Shiite Believers, they coexist with the Sumites, and the Orthodox Christian and Jewish minorities.
It is a country that, if not infiltrated by foreign interests, has great tolerance and a high level of culture and freedom.
And it is in full development largely due to the Gas Reserves.

Russia does like the "no active border disputes" requirement nato has. Not just ukraine woth chrimea , Donbas, and other occupied teritories but transistria (a separatist movement of Russians living in Moldova). The Georgian conflict where russia again moved in a lot of agents who started attacking georgian citizens and then when the police got involved russia invaded the northern provinces. Chechnia is fully occupied by russia. In the Armenia and Azerbaijan conflict. Russia rolled in and litterally moved the border away from legally recognized location to create an active border dispute. This is just european and Eurasia regions. I know there's a lot more Syria, Lebanon, Palestine, Iraq, Iran, Afghanistan. Excluding the African conflicts and Burma. I hope Azerbaijan can join quickly but we need georgia too. Otherwise that'll be a hard alliance to support given they only border actively hostile (russia/Iran) or neutral nations (georgia). Not sure their relationship with Armenia as I feel alot of it was provoked and instigated by russia and they are currently at peace after the short conflict (taking their land back last year)

After all, we have Greece and Turkey, and they are quarrelling since the war of Troy.

It is not about religion but democracy. The first key NATO principle is democracy. Aliyev has been in power for 30 years and was just elected with 92% "vote" and no opposition, no freedom, no choice as someone would like to say.
