I’m pretty sure that the boy, girl, and old man were dead. They were stuck in a loop as they tried to reach the afterlife. You nearly died while on the train, which cause you to be taken there. The boy and girl say “it’s not your time yet” as way to show that you are still alive and not dead. I’m fairly sure that the background NPCs were the living passengers, which is why your were unable to talk to them. (Btw I literally only watched you play the game and I have no background info, so I’m 95% sure that I’m not correct ._ .)

Lauren, you should try the game exit 8, its similar. You have to spot the anomalies and you have to get to number 8 and go up the stairs, if you see any anomalies you have to go back, if you make a mistake you will get teleported back to number 0, And some anomalies can kill you.
