  • In the evening, Jud and Billy’s mum unwind with a couple of drinks as a band plays Sixties favourites at Dard's, Pontefract Road at Sunningdale Drive in Cudworth, a few miles northeast of Barnsley. Formerly the Cudworth Hotel, the bar finally closed down in 2013.

British mining towns, ripped away, by the Thatcher government.
I lived in St Helens, two working mines and lots of work in the mines. The town self imploded when the mines closed, great times as a kid in that era...

Ok this isn't the 80s and it's not fashionable to blame everythng on Thatcher any more, she did what she had to do with what she had, I hated her too until I actually looked into it btw, losing the pits was awful, displacing working men like that but the mines were done, if they weren't do you really think she'd have scrapped them and welcomed the nations hate like that? Put your bias to one side and actually review her options, she was twice the leader May is

@Andy Frost It was the speed with which she closed the mines - many still profitable - rather than closing the mines themselves. There was no alternative employment for whole communities because they opted to close them purely to provoke a confrontation with the unions so they could break them. Many of Thatcher's own former ministers cite this as their biggest error as those communities slipped into drug addiction and crime throughout the '90s and never recovered from that sudden absence of work.

Nothing but great memories of organised trips to the seaside as a nipper, youd get some money in a little envelope for the slot machines. k ow I wasn't aware that South Yorkshire is a fairly modern county, but I googled the history of Yorkshire and the original Ridings of Yorkshire were West, East and North..
The East Riding of Yorkshire was renamed Humberside (including parts of Lincolnshire) and the West Riding of Yorkshire was divided into two separate areas of West Yorkshire and South Yorkshire).
I've always assumed that South Yorkshire had existed for a lot longer than it actually has.
