    I wish we got these in the UK, pretty sure Sony never released these HD CRTs here, I’ve never seen one. Literally the perfect 360/PS3 display.

    Great screen.
    I've got the big brother and it's my favourite for watching movies off my plex via from the amazon fire stick.
    I tried a pc hooked up via vga breakout but struggled to get an image to fit nicely and figured an 360&ps3 was enough to play with.

    Great video Rob!
    Dreamcast light gun being a fail is to be expected, as this TV runs at a fixed scanrate of 33kHz. Different resolutions are scaled via Sony's MID IC (multi image driver) which introduces a bit of input lag.
    Did not realize that these TVs sync to PC resolutions, that is neat. Always figured the RGBHV jacks were strictly intended to be used with HD set-top boxes of the time. The Sony HD CRTs we got here in North America don't have this capability.

      I would imagine the usa tvs will display pc resolutions through their component inputs with a rgb to component transcoder.

      You guys got a few HDMI equipped Sony CRTs in North America, i dont think we got any at all here down under. I guess pc compatibility is what we got instead.

      On the other hand US XBR models feature a HDPT (HD pass trough) option in the service menu that disables the MID-X thing on progressive video signals. I'll trade the RGBHV to this any day. I'm desperate to find a way to disable the MID-X thing on my KV-HR34M91 and feed 33.7khz video in it. PS5 looks gorgeous on it tho. I use KRAMER VP-729 as external DAC/scaler on it.

    I love this TV. I own the 36 inch.I have tested the offical PS2 VGA cable on this TV and can confirm it works but the screen is green. Its much better with Component cables for PS2. I have spent hours in the service menu but there was no real fix for geometry. Best option is, like the Wii U, allows you to adjust the screen size opposed to fixing it in service menu. If anyone has anything better please let me know.

      @JohnSmith-qn3ob Před rokem

      If the screen is green it usually means you don't have the color space set properly.
      Did you set the color space in the PS2 system settings?

    very detailed - glad you covered the gender bender VGA -> BNC -> RCA situation in particular as that's quite the combination of obscure CRT standards. the DRC stuff is true garbage - as for the VGA picture adjustment the way that i get around it using a 720p hdfury 2 as a source was just by artificially shrinking the image by way of the nvidia control panel, aka putting a big black bar on the right side of the screen & then using the service menu to nudge the image around until satisfied. i don't recall if the service menu gave enough leeway to have the image fit the screen without the black bar, but the nvidia control panel method did give me an effectively reduced resolution of some particular number like 1134x688 or some such rather than 1280x720, which would always invariably overscan. basically afaik your only option is artificial underscan from the source.

    I need to try mine with the Retrotink 5x and the 540p mode that was in an old fw. There should be a service menu setting that disables processing so it only accepts a 1080i/540p signal, but with almost zero lag. Apparently lightguns will work in this mode. I think the reason that lightguns aren't working for you is due to the lag.

    • @b0nz0beavis
      @b0nz0beavis Před rokem

      That’s a service menu option called HDPT but it’s not found in this TV. 1080i has 31ms of display lag.

      @@b0nz0beavis oh really? That's annoying. I never got round to looking in the service menu because the TV isn't set up and I'm lazy. I always wondered if it was even an option on this model

    Awesome clip mate.
    I’ve spent so much time in the service menu of this thing it isn’t funny. Have calibrated mine (with colorimeter and HCFR) and just put up some footage showing Returnal on PC.
    I’ve pretty much come to understand all the service menu stuff for calibration and also the motion and clarity stuff. Probably the biggest thing I found was a setting BLK that does something with black levels and also appears to do some APL/ABL type of thing where it can drastically raise black levels unless it’s set to 0. It’s really easy to demonstrate with a test pattern for dynamic brightness. Let us know if ya interested and I’ll publish a clip showing it. TLDR imo the BLK setting (number 7ish under LUMA) should be set to 0 and left there permanently.

    but there it is widescreen crt's some can have 1080p, samsung also made a few rare 2k crts?

    • @DoubleMonoLR
      @DoubleMonoLR Před 23 dny

      2k basically is 1080p. 2k/4k are horizontal resolutions, 720, 1080 etc are vertical resolutions.
      Vertical resolutions are much more relevant for CRTs as they have 720, 1080 horizontal lines stacked vertically, but don't have horizontal pixels as such. With digital displays of course there are pixels horizontally & vertically.
      "2k" refers to a variety of resolutions around 2000 pixels wide, seemingly 2048 x 1080 is the most common, which is only marginally higher than 1080p(1920x1080)

    The only problem with these consumer crt's, is that the geometry and convergence are so bad, 95% of the time. I have had a lot more luck finding near perfect picture quality, in computer crt monitors. I just found a Sony Trinitron Multiscan E540. Its 21" and 1920x1440 resolution. Its used as a computer monitor and for consoles. Dreamcast, Xbox 360, PS3, PS4 pro, Switch OLED all look great at 480P or 720P.

    If it can't do native refreshrates it's useless for gaming, crt motion clarity is destroyed if you play 60hz games at 120hz. framerate has to match refreshrate for crt motion magic to work or else you get the duplicate images in motion
    the scan conversion shit was the worst shit they ever done
