Dr. Bruce Bugbee's Utah State University Crop Physiology Laboratory has been well-funded by NASA for many years. Dr. Bugbee has performed work on everything from pharmaceutical-grade food drops to precision cultivation under electric lights, but when cannabis became legal, several large growers started funding his lab to study cannabis cultivation. At about the same time, growers needed instruments to measure their cannabis grows, so they went to Apogee Instruments, which Dr. Bugbee founded in 1995. At Apogee, Dr. Bugbee develops custom cultivation instrumentation.
Dr. Bugbee's lab has some 44 growth chambers, so he had the infrastructure to quickly ramp up cannabis studies when the plant became legal in parts of the country. He also hired Ph.D. graduate students eager to learn the science of cannabis cultivation.
Cannabis is a new crop full of very strange claims that come from "heritage growers." For example, some growers say the plant requires uniquely high levels of phosphorus, and others believe it needs to be planted under the full moon. While he debunked both, to some extent, his lab is behind several discoveries, like how cannabis is uniquely sensitive to light pollution at night - of all the crops they have studied, cannabis is the most sensitive.

@@EvitaNY-re2sv as in photo bleaching? Photobleaching is caused by high-red fraction light, and high-intensity both of course working together will give you a bleached tip. Most of the boards are designed with high-red output as it’s easier to achieve a better efficiency with Red photons. This is why this happens indoor, not outdoor if you have a high ppfd.

Except he doesn’t realize a good portion of “heritage” growers went to school for botany and plant sciences like I did. We just have 20 plus years more experience in the industry and plant.
Most successful growers that have been working in the industry for a long time have a very good understanding of the plant and don’t believe in any of the myths

The Trips I've been having really helped me a lot. I’m now able to meditate and I finally feel in control of my emotions and my future and things that used to be mundane to me now seem incredible and full of nuance on top of that I'm way less driven by my ego and I have alot more empathy as well

2 decade heritage grower here. I take what I can from science but I also know I have done thousands of scientific experiments in my time growing and have documented it. I will try the same strain in multiple mediums with multiple feeds and multiple sprays and not spraying at all in every different environment and genetic I can. Some of us didn't have to time or money to go to university and had to learn it on the way. Thankfully there are people with phd's like yourself grower like me can learn from.
A scientific experiment is immensely difficult to put in place as you need to have a very strict control group, not just from one grow to another, or even two boxes side by side, there are so many factors you can't call your experiments scientifique experiments
@@surronzak8154 i use very strict control groups and I use a use spectrum of variety of test sites my dude. Scientists get q research center typically for this strain. I use dozens and dozens. I got an edge of you guys because I have a reputation and experience and I make my testers money where as scientists leech money from research funds. I'm self propelling with way more sectors of research and where as your funding can be cut and manipulated mine cannot. Most of the greatest scientific pioneers were scientists at home and in the field not sweaty dorks in a lab working for a research grant. We use all the technicals and variables and control groups a lab would use on a much larger scale because we all want to learn for the sake of being better farmers not for the sake of spreading our cheeks to get more research money you nerd. We are creating real life solutions to real market problems in real time. You work in a financial vacuum most of the time and when you aren't you are so late behind the trends that hardly any reliable information comes frrom real cannabis science before bro science cracks in for you. You guys got no connection with nature thus have no say on organic farming because you dudes still need to use PPM readers to this day where as we can just read our plants and know the issue from experience and we test new hypotheses all the time by doing CONTROLLED EDPERIMENTS.we add in every factor of every part of the grow even the stupid PPM readings judt so we can rub it in your face. I have yet to see a labcoat make a hit strain to this day also friend.

you will get better resultst with led, you need any good soil recipe i do not add any big P its mostly evertything equal in my soil.
you may need heating in winter but having a big led like a 720w lets you grow under 400w to 600w.
get your own fertilizer its the biggest price point over the growing time the energy consumed can only be reduced to a point.
the best quality you will achieve over the right ppfd with not to much fertiliezer ,adding co2 is mostly a waste with the more energy consumed imo.@@lacipeter6934
I have a question! At 11:24, Bruce says that phosphorus can't be manufactured, it can only be mined. Does this exclude the phosphorus found in animal waste? And for the growers who use natural fertilizer(animal waste) how can they mitigate the enviromental effects of the amounts of phosphorus run off ?

Rule of thumb with most fertilizers is to use 2/3 of recommended dosage.
It all depends on the grow medium to be fair here. And the temperatures of course. Anything above 25 degrees Celsius plus can be fed at a 100% fertilizer scheme dosage in my experience. If the temperature’s lower go 20% less every one degree Celsius.
I have a question for you Bruce: your PHD's... can they make bubble hash, 99 sift, live/hash rosin?
Or do they go into chemistry and learn how to screw up quality cannabinoieds with chemicals.

I know a grower who cuts willow branches puts them in tubsx, fill up with water and let soak. The water afterwards is then used to water the plants...uses no growing chemicals ..
I feel so much better knowing they overwatered plants on the space station. Even nasa doesn’t have a flawless watering schedule
I'm trying my hand at growing a few plants this season. It can be a little stressful when people are telling you that you need to use this soil and not that soil and buy all these containers of different nutrients for this growth period and that growth period and to be mixing your own shit and blah blah blah. I planted in pots, outdoors with some fertilizer mixed in. Other than watering, I'm just kinda letting nature do its thing instead of trying to buy all this stuff I don't have the money for anyways. About half my plants are a month old and they're looking and doing great aside from a couple things I fucked up on. If you're not on a commercial level or trying to maximize everything for the best bud in the world, than I don't really see a need for all that stuff. I could be wrong since I have little to no experience but from what little I have, it's proving that it's not as complicated as most people wanna make it out to be, especially those on YT.

My plants in zoik witj a small amount of phosporus salts absolutely devastated my plants locking out calcium which meant everything stopped growing .but an organic plant based phosporus caused no problems whatsoever. If your in a hydro system salts seem to work but I will never ever ever use salted granular nutrient salts.

10:00 Planting at full-moon does have an affect, solely due to the moons affect upon the tidal systems in which impacts the amount of ground water/the water table/level, I haven't done any studies, but am I wrong? LOL.. This should help during harvest as the myth goes because the plants will be naturally lower in moisture content during the moon phase, no?

How do outdoor growers deal with light pollution and is there an impact if the plants are this sensetive? Is a cars headlight shining on your plants enough to impact yield? A full moon over a period of days? It seems to me and maybe I am wrong but if you open your tent at night and there is a light on in the house down the hall from your grow room, that is enough light to impact your yield. Is that correct?
Outdoor growers do not put any hoop houses near the street. It's usually hidden from any lights.
From Dr. Bugbee:
It turns out even the brightest full moon is not enough to affect cannabis, but two full moons might be enough for sensitive cultivars. The effect is cumulative so car headlights for a minute is not enough. The light pollution effect is greatest close to the middle of the night cycle, and it looks like the plants reset each night.
@@jaredritter4386 I get that but I know people that grow who have neighbors who have lights in their back yards. Is that enough light pollution? My point the the question is asking for a quantifiable amount of light that will alter your grow. Are small light pollution episodes nearly negligible or are they more significant. Have they done any studies allowing some light leak in a controlled amount in grow tent A and zero in tent B. If you repeat that 1000 times what are the results?

Go to 15.21 and he explains actual light pollution and the *text book rule*
However, headlights are good enough to read text, so if you've got car lights shining on them every night for even just 1 minute every night. It'll affect them. Try to get a tarp or shade cloth so it blocks the headlights. But you'll have to uncover it every morning or w/e

Itd be next to impossible to tell unless you have live metrics on every leafs assigned role and nutrient profile. You could make one for hydro but you'd have a sensor for every possible substance you're likely to run into plus your usual temp and EC readings all tied into an advanced display/program then a whole load of dosers and each substance you'll need in all their usable forms.
It's a lifetimes work for one man at least

Mix your own nutes from high purity salts (KNO3, KH2PO4, MgSO4, CaNO3, K2SO4, NH4NO3 etc...). Pros in commercial hydro do it. With RO water, you can calculate the exact ppm of everything. You don't need to care about ppms in medium with frequent irrigation Rockwool or DTW.
People use too much light in their projects to do that you need optimal parameters of all areas otherwise your wasting money. I've had some of my best results in very minimal light for flower.
The environmental impact of this product is criminal. From fertilizers, electricity, the insane amount of packaging. I’m wondering how long it will be able to continue the way it is

Light pollution is real. But the plants are smart and have a capability to adjust to things like streetlights in the neighborhood. Especially if this light interference repeats at regular intervals. They have a capacity to identify this “white noise” and eliminate it from the equation. Not without an initial loss of vigor though. Cannabis is a survivor. They call it weed for a reason. I’m happy to see that actual plant people are approaching these issues rather than the cannabis specific growers who have little understanding of plants other than their target crop. How about spending All of that wasted money on figuring out how to master it here on earth first, here we already have everything that is needed for growth yet on Mars there is nothing to sustain any life of plant's. When you can make the Sahara desert a perfect food and plant habitat so humans can live there and only then should you start spending money on trying it on another planet.
