In today's episode, I'm heading into the remaster of one of my favorite Kart Racers on the PS1. Crash Team Racing got the N.Sane Treatment, so is it worth just as much as the Trilogy? I sure hope so.

They're kinda useless for me cause of the weekend bonus.
I would like to point out that in _spite_ of Activision's best efforts, Beenox has done their absolute best to make the microtransactions completely optional. Lowering prices and adding the 2x Weekend Bonus to offline modes ensures that the grind is even more fair now than when the microtransactions were first added.
Beenox deserves our praise and support, despite their evil publisher.

Now that's scummy.
I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not.
Yes, the "In-Game Purchases" label is nowhere near specific enough, however it IS still super scummy of them to sneak them in after all the reviews and high praise came in.
@@Cute___E I suppose I could have worded my comment better; I'm not exactly the best at that, especially verbally.
I'm not being sarcastic: it truly is slimy that physical boxes don't have "In-Game Purchases" on them despite the game now having such Purchases.

Mario Kart Tour: Oh, Hello there.
@Joshua Suh I mean, your right but this came out after mario kart 8 and who knows what Nintendo's going to do for mario kart 9? Nintendo has been adding cosmetic items to their more recent games (Mario Odyssey, BoTW, Splatoon) what's not to say that they'll do the same thing with Mario Kart 9. They might not be microtransactions, but the idea is still there and they are technically doing it for a mario kart game on mobile. The game has been downloaded a lot from what I heard and people still play Pokemon GO. So you never know. Just be sure to not support it if you feel obligated.
@Joshua Suh Fair point. Though be wary about what they do next. We live in a gaming era where developers are creating more incentives for gamers to keep playing their games for longer periods of time and to unlock more stuff (usually cosmetics).
CTR:NF gets new content for free for several months while TSR gets nothing.
CTR:NF is above and beyond the better game, though... TSR is total downgrade in every sense of the word from ASRT while CTR:NF takes one of the best racers on PS1 and upgrades it in almost every way (the only serious flaw being the unnecessary but thankfully completely optional microtransactions, hence why I said *almost* every way)...
11:13 I’m not even an old man but I’m about to sound like one:
“Back in my day, if you saw someone wearing fancy armor online you didn’t go buy it, you beta the campaign on legendary.”
I feel for the kids who have to deal with this grind to unlock stuff because their parents rightfully don’t want to pay for stuff like this. They didn’t ask for this.
i wounder if games still do that :o
I love how everyone used to complain about how bs that stuff used to be to unlock and now that there’s a faster way they’re all like “it ruins the sense of progression!”
@@jennifergriel861
I havent unlocked half of the stuff and i am "nearly" done with dev times, probably takes weeks before i am done with slide coliseum and out of time, everytime i improve my old pb by 0.1 seconds, a ghost of that new pb automatically appears, just to confuse you. That is what i think of as a real problem with the game, but even more annoying is the fact there are 3 different boost meters which can be changed with a press of a button, but i'd like to be able to lock on to 1 single meter and also i would like to lock on to a singe camera angle, so i dont have to press L2 at the start of each race.
You might be glad to hear that since the regular updates have ceased, the last major one added new skins for the special unlockable Champion Kart that can only be unlocked by beating the even *faster* times on time trials, and a new set of wheels for the karts that can only be unlocked by beating the developer time trials, so there's plenty of busting ass to be had here now for awesome unlockables.

@@_V.Va_ Aww, thanks man.
It took me a month to realize what you actually meant.
CTR Remastered: Good racing game, horribly greedy publisher.
I hate the fact that they added microtransactions, greedy bastards. But its still a fun game.
@joseaca Its the principle. If they really think they needed microtransactions to make the upcoming updates free it should of at least been their from the start so people knew what they were getting into.
That still also doesn't excuse the grind.
My line of thought:
Mario Kart: Has micro transactions
Crash Team Racing: Has micro transactions
Team Sonic Racing: Has no micro transactions
I guess Sonic wins this one...
joseaca Yeah. The DLC's just an attempt to get people to forgive/excuse the bullshit, that allows them to rake in billions yearly off people who have addictions, kids who haven't developed the mental fortitude or understanding to resist the manipulative practices, or just from sheer bullying.
Not to mention how shady they handled it, releasing it after the reviews were out, so they could get people who don't want to support this crap would buy the game without knowing.
@@SakuraAvalon honestly the dev team have been working their ass off releasing news characters and skins and maps every month since It released, I can almost forgive it if Activision wasn't so damn shady holding them off and straight up lying saying they won't be added in

ExpressVPN: *Say sike right now*
Honestly, if it weren't for the microtransactions, I would've been hyped for this game.
But, this is Activision we're talking about, and there are two things they simply can't help themselves in regards to doing - tanking their public image and shoving microtransactions into games that don't need microtransactions.
after seeing tom scotts video those vpn ads kinda be iffy now
I mean to be fair, there is no such thing as a perfect anything and with enough brute force anything can be hacked.
I never really cared for vpns aside from the painfully obvious, but never spoken aloud reasons and surprise surprise, that is pretty much the only real reason to get one.
Thought the same thing. Really sobering to hear everything he broke down so thoroughly just said with no irony
they were always iffy considering their main advertising focus is talking about a vulnerability that should have been fixed since 1995
@@CaroFDoom exactly.
To also be fair, last I heard about NordVPN, despite getting hacked, nobody's personal information was found on their servers and the hackers weren't able to get anything.
So if anything I think that actually shows these VPN things ARE secure?
I still prefer to grind for currency due to the feeling of satisfaction of putting your hard work into something you wanted.
And I still have trouble with muscle memory with this game, especially the online mode, but hey, one of these days I'd love to race Johnny.
The problem is that the game is quite stingy on how much wampa coins you can earn it’s been a problem since the game launch like they make you earn less wampa coins on purpose to persuade you to buy micro.

@@kratosgow342 ...game is not stingy. Offline you earn less than online but you could still earn 2x on weekend bonuses for example.
Totally agree with you on the microtransactions, game developers just need to stop with this bs but that will probably never happen at this rate
This is more of a publisher issue than a game developer issue. It’s the publishers who force their game devs to do this kind of thing, in this case the publisher being Activision.
It's really kind of maddening how they handle the pit stop and microtransactions. And like you said, even the way they set up the shop is so transparently greedy. They know that if they make all characters and cosmetics available in the pit stop so that you could just buy the few things you want right away, they'd lose their chance to ring you dry for everything you're worth. Honestly, I think there are some things they add just so that they can pad out the number of items that the pit stop has to rotate through.
8:02 - Oh hai Tiny Toon Adventures: How I Spent My Vacation!
When Activision adds Microtransactions to CTR: NF
Me: YOU HAD ONE JOB, ACTIVISION!!!
Eh, doesn't matter to me anymore, the nitro points grinding is what killed it for me. I legit feel like moving on from this game now because of it.
@joseaca Splatoon 1 & 2 added _a lot_ of new content and updates
for 1-2 _years_ after they launched & that was free just fine.
(Aside from that single-player expansion in the 2nd game, but that was separate.)
@@King_Luigi Difference is that Splatoon is a first party title made to sell Switch consoles while CTR is on every platform (except PC) so it doesn't get that luxury.
@@V-Jes The fact that it's on multiple platforms gives them even _less_ of an excuse for it.
They're _already_ getting cash from several places for it, they don't need a cash store on top of that!
If giving us more content is _that_ much of an issue for them, then just ask for like $10
up-front and be done with it. None of this sneaky post-launch/review store nonsense.
@@King_Luigi Being on 3 platforms doesn't mean they make 3 times the money from it while developing additional content costs more money than you think what most consumers are not going to pay 10 dollars for, so making it free with microtransactions does make a lot wiser decision for both the developers and consumers stand point, tho adding microtransactions after a month is literally the only real bad thing about it while the game is generous enough with the wumpa coins when playing online during weekends that only an idiot would buy/say how those outright ruined the game.
Im really glad you talked about the Microtransactions John, and gave the game fair criticism over it, since i know you dont ALWAYS talk about that kinda stuff its great that its brought up, personally as someone who has pretty bad habits and impulses it does upset me greatly that Activision decided to go with this move.

3:56 This was something they just added in the most recent update. It was a nice change after complaints that Speed types being way overpowered and only on certain characters, now any character with the speed engine will have a good chance in winning.
They should've just buffed turning and balanced imo
Balancing the other classes would have been better, because all this does is make one class the only one to use.
@I Want Sex Hubby They're inferior compared to Speed class
@Take My Breath Away!!! It's because Speed class characters are supposed to have the highest top speed, but poor turning to balance it. However, there's an incredibly easy was to circumvent that, which makes them objectively better than every other class because, if played correctly, they have zero weaknesses.
Fun Fact: Crash Team Racing was actually an attempt to end the franchise. How exactly? Nitrous Oxide. The creators were banking on the idea of having an alien in Crash being seen as so stupid and forced that people would accuse the franchise of Jumping the Shark. Needless to say, that failed.
Yeah and after that the games have been mostly shit. Twinsanity and the first two GBA games were okay.
Well if they wanted people to jump the shark, why not just make a bad game?
I still like this game itself, and I loved being able to finally get Into CTR and I love how Beenox generally has at least tried to constantly upgrade the game to fix common problems people have
But goddamn it activision, did you have to put in the damn microtransactions?
Still playing at least and still haven't spent a damn penny on those damn microtransactions (Penta, polar, pura, baby t and Spyro for life)
@joseaca the one's whom bought the game
@joseaca The people who bought the game?
@joseaca Map packs. I'll take one-time purchases where I can get all the added content any day of the week over this fucking garbage. Also, this is just me but, to be honest, I'd rather not have any of the extra content if it meant god-awful microtransactions were included. They absolutely ruin the experience for me, because I can't play without this nagging feeling in the back of my mind, and I hate that.
@joseaca I would pick A because I'll be supporting the developers also I hope you know what free means
@joseaca but you are saying with out microtransaction there is no free stuff but if someone has to pay than is not free is it. Also I would rather Donate the money than paying for microtransactions knowing it won't effect the game progression in any way
This was my fav version of the intro by far. I love the bit with Johnny’s silhouette sipping the coffee along with the super funky solo thingy. Peak
You can look at the exhausts instead of the boost meter. The smoke turns black when it's the right time.
"never had a problem finding a match"

What system do you have it on?
On ps4 its quick and most lobbies are filled too.
I never had a problem finding a game, but the act of finding and loading into the game usually took much longer than the races themselves.
@@JELKK11 Switch has it the worst. That's the version I play. It usually takes me more than 5 minutes just to find a lobby and I'm lucky if the room doesn't disband before a race starts. It's awful. I'm glad Johnny's experience with the online was good (minus the poor finishes), but most people I've come across that play the Switch version agree that it's pretty bad. Not too surprising really considering that the Switch version is always behind on updates. It's like Beenox and Activision don't care about the Switch.

I’m glad you went into detail about the micro transactions I was afraid you’d glance over the potential issue like you did with overwatch. I loved the game but after beating adventure mode I didn’t get nearly the amount of coins I wanted.
And I’m nowhere near good enough to have a fun time online meaning if I want to get more characters and karts I’d have to pay up. I haven’t touched the game since August because of that

sandywolfr26 I’ll only play it if I have friends over. I hope Spyro and Nina come back to the store at a reasonable price. Or they have an update where anybody who completes adventure mode gets a huge coin bonus
Do you have friends who have the game on the same system as you and can also play online?
Playing online with friends is honestly much more fun than playing against random people, and makes it feel like less of a grind.

Hah! Chalk one up for Team Sonic Racing.
But seriously though, CTR Nitro Fueled is still fantastic, both graphically and gameplay wise, I'll give it that.
5:00 YES! Finally someone who feels the same. As someone who put far too much time into CTR, the new controls like with the N. Sane Trilogy threw me off a bit. Sewer Speedway's shortcut is one I could do almost 100% of the time on the PS1 version but could not (and still cannot) consistently do it in the remake.
I did go onto Platinum the game and once I got used to the new controls, beating the AI on Hard mode was a breeze, including the Oxide Time Trials outside of a handful of levels. I'm just glad that a CZcamsr has actually talked about this, great review as always Juan!
it's really interesting to see a review of this game from someone who's just seeing it after a lot of the changes (like adding in the microtransactions, adding in engine swaps, etc)
I did pay full price upfront for Nitro Fueled, and the microtransactions just feels like a slap in the face after they were added in.
It's one of the reasons why I don't really play the game much anymore because unless you buy PS Plus to go online, you didn't really get coins fast enough to get the items or characters you wanted due to the constantly revolving store. It gets worse when you add timed characters and items to the mix. You pretty much need to put money into it or play it for hours every day just to get everything, and if you slow up, you will miss your only chance to get that GP exclusive character
As much as I love playing this game and spending much time getting so good at the brilliant controls it offers, MAN will it change everything you've ever felt about other racers like Mario Kart! Everything about Mario Kart 8 now feels stiff and off and I feel like a total noob when playing that game now!
Fucking this, I literally cant play MK8 anymore because of CTR
@@tek3576 I can't play the OG CTR because of CTR:NF
I'm glad you properly looked at the game instead of ranting about evil microtransactions the whole time. A lot of people just disregard the entirety of the game now because of the mere existence of the microtransactions but I'm glad you saved it until last. Personally I haven't spent anything on this game and I have every character and almost all the kart parts and skins I care about and that's just by playing weekends when you get a ton of bonus coins, but I guess if you start late on this game you'd feel like spending some money just to catch up.
I have been waiting SO LONG for this video.
Trust me johnny, this is Activision we're talking about here.

Aw yeah! Time for a game I was looking forward to for a long time after it was announced. Since then, I’ve been l loving the game. My only minor complaint is the fact that every new Grand Prix comes out every month. I hope activision and beenox know that most of us have either work or school, so a little break between each Grand Prix would be nice. Aside from that, I love this game as much as the original. Thank you beenox.
The game's selling point is its characters.
While Mario Kart 8 dumps in palette swaps and costumes as separate characters and Team Sonic Racing doesn't get its cast, Crash Team Racing Nitro-Fueled includes just about everyone.
2 things that might help you.
You can use the tires to see how high your boost gauge is, you don't need the boost gauge itself.
you can hand brake, it kills your speed and lets you rotate for a distance you'll like
I won't pretend that what Activision did to CTR wasn't pretty pathetic. At least, the fact that they waited til the reviews came in to go back on their word on microtransations (which I really hope people don't blame Beenox for, I feel like they are just as against this as we are) and the drip feeding of coins.
As for me, as much as I would have loved if that stuff didn't happen (and if they retooled the Pit Stop), it doesn't dampen my enjoyment of this game for one simple but important reason: it's not forced or intrusive to the game.
You're still capable of earning Wumpa coins the good ol fashioned way and they're never truly in your face about the microtransactions. In fact honestly, I sometimes forget they're in the game to begin with. While I feel they shouldn't be in there, it's really more on the person for caving in and shelling out than the game itself when it's so optional that it's sometimes forgetful.
It's a real shame that this is causing people to be turned away from replaying it or newcomers from buying it themselves. Because the game itself is still a fantastic remake with a lot of love and detail poured into it and bursting at the seams. And I hate that the mere presence of microtransactions are overshadowing the hard work and pure unfiltered Crash fan service Beenox crafted for us.
EDIT: There's actually a second method to gauge your slide meter without looking away from the road. Pay attention to the glow of the tires: when they glow in the middle that's when you boost
I'm glad to hear I'm not alone on that; I loved CTR NF at launch, and then seeing it get the microtransactions post launch after explicit statements not to.. I dropped it on that prospect alone. Such a lame move.
@joseaca Free updates don't really cater much to me when they go back on their word for extra money. I'm an avid fan of Overwatch-- 1500+ hours, and I'm fine with loot boxes because they were part of the gane from the start. I wouldn't care if WCs for purchase were added later, but to say there wouldn't be any and then add them still is just silly.
@joseaca And a free turd on a plate is still free. Your point?
When johnny says the double marathon is about to begin :I pray gor your "INSANITY" John😁
nice to see you weigh in on this game and the horrible microtransactions looking forward to the duel marathons

Actually, the boost mechanic in Nitro Fueled is more or less the same as the original CTR.
The lack of said mechanic in Crash Nitro Kart is probably the biggest criticism levelled at it.
Not gonna lie the grind and the micro transactions killed the game for me. I just lost all interest in playing it, I don't even want to get Spyro or any of the other new characters added it just made the game drag hard.
That's what microtransactions do to games.
I feel you buddy
What grind? I didnt go out of my way to do any challenges for nitro and I finished the GP like 2-3 weeks before it ends.
9:27 The reasons you state are why I love Warframe so much. Sure you can pay to get stuff but it doesn't take THAT long to get your hands on gear and stuff.
Glad to see Derrick getting support for his dream (it holds a lot of promise).
