    Feeling heard is so important. I had a number of failed attempts at “treatment” (psychologists telling me what behaviours I needed to change) but it was only when I went into counselling that I felt someone was listening. Not a cure but a first step on the way to healing.

    • @funkymunky
      @funkymunky Před 3 lety

      What comes after counseling, though? I'm counseling myself, mostly; being my own best friend. Now, what?

      @@funkymunky I’ve found cognitive behavioural therapy a really good tool. It’s basically about addressing negative self talk, which is something I had to work on fairly consistently outside the therapist’s office, since those patterns were so ingrained. I taught a friend how to do CBT, so I know it’s something you can work on without a therapist. The journey of the inner child is good. It’s about reparenting yourself (becoming the parent you deserve(d)), although it usually comes with a warning to stop if you become overwhelmed emotionally and leave it until you can work with a therapist. It’s a bit different to being your own best friend, although that sounds like a good thing too!
      Support groups can be great but I would recommend if run by someone with mental health qualifications of some kind. I attended a short term anxiety support group and it was very helpful. Amazing how many of the group thought they were the only one with that issue. You might be able to find a free one suited to your needs.
      There’s a channel called “Therapy in a Nutshell” which has a lot of really practical tools. She also has a way of giving different POV’s on issues-you know how sometimes hearing a different perspective on an issue can give you a new understanding? She does this really well. Hope this helps and keep at it! Those who persist will eventually succeed!

      Yes, I think we need to stop trying to see ourselves reflected in celebrities and just turn to the people near us, speak honestly and listen to one another. And turn social media off. Thanks for watching.

    These guys seem like very genuine and wise people.
    I've always been critical of how loosely mental health issues tend to get "treated". I'm glad people are talking about this. We *need* more so-called professionals to learn to listen, to show genuine empathy.
    I don't know how much this has to do with masculinity vs. femininity, since both genders with mental health issues tend to not get listened to.
    Thanks!

    Spot on when at 4:00 he talks about focusing on "feminine" talking and relating when we should use the body more for therapy also. I have been saying this for years, happy to hear someone else voice it.

    • @qnms101
      @qnms101 Před 3 lety

      Often men just aren’t good at talking about things, especially with people they don’t know well. I don’t think most men will talk about the real root of the issue before they develop a relationship with their psychologist where they trust them. Physical therapy I feel like can help them open up

    • @ringodax12
      @ringodax12 Před 3 lety +2

      I think it should be a two headed approach. We should dismantle the idea that talking and relating are feminine things and work to make it acceptable for men and boys to talk. We also need to meet men where they are and expand options for mental health care for everyone because many people men and women fall outside what is currently done.

    • @k_rez
      @k_rez Před 3 lety +4

      @@ringodax12 I agree that talking and relating should not be considered feminine.
      I would go further and say that we actually need to re-evaluate what talking and relating is in terms of communicating problems or emotions and mental health. I think that it what is a point addressed in this video.

No mate she's doing it because toxic masculinity and men's mental health is a serious issue in the country, and she's delving into it by talking to many other people and opening up the conversation to us. You don't need to be professionally trained to talk about mental health. Mental health needs to be talked about more often, and coming up with obscure reasons like you've given to indicate why she shouldn't be doing these videos is part of the problem.
