  • F1 has announced that from 2026, the Spanish GP will be held at a brand-new hybrid street circuit in Madrid for 10 years. But having seen Formula 1 previously try to migrate the Spanish GP circuit to Valencia in 2013, which ended up failing entirely, is Madrid's Spanish GP set to fail as well? Or has F1 learnt from history, and will Madrid be a golden race for Spain? And what about the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya's muddy future? Sam Hall and Jon Noble discuss all these points and more.

I wonder what will happen with the Barcelona track? 2 races? or will it become the test track? or will it be removed from the calendar?

I think they should avoid "sochi's failures. It looks like a lot to Sochi and it probably has the same problems. But leaving Barcelona is a gain on my book.

Everyone knows which track has the most empty stands except for F1 and the organiser - Shanghai 😂

thats why there are actual simulations of tracks nowadays, relax, people will complain; always, if its too easy, too hard, too deadly, to weird, or too normal etc etc. Well, F1 always wanted money and testing thats how it works. They want to test how much money they get and how 90% of folks will go there by train or bus and then go around n ve fun around the city.

You don't touch on the possible political tug in the background, Madrid vs Barcelona. Personally would not miss the Barcolona track, but am not convinced by the layout of this track bringing the excitement F1 deserves. This is where tracks like Mugello, Hockenheim, Portimao, Imola should be secured a spot on the calendar instead.

Besides the sports side, the Valencia GP was a hell of a mony laundry operation, big enough to get killed the mayor that made that event a few days before go to court in order to clarify the accounts within the GP. The Madrid mayor is now from the same party, they messed a lot of money and this GP will allow them to make a blank sheet of that making the numbers do magic. What a shem for the sport..
Oh, at least they're representing properly the country with a couple of roundabouts, as we're the country on the world with mos of them for sure hahaha.

Más allá del signo político que te guste o no y lo que ocurra siempre es bueno un evento deportivo para una ciudad y un país no se trata de políticos buenos o malos eso lo dirán los jueces se trata del negocio y por lo tanto dinero que puede atraer.

Stefano Domenicali “It’s a great location” 😂😂😂 Geez that bloke is a bulls%#* artist!! I can tell you right now, not one F1 fan will say “Yeah it’s a crap circuit, at a dull location, but the opportunity to get there by public transport was just too hard to refuse”. Give me a break.

Will it be shit, probably. But I’ve dreaded seeing the next race is Catalunya for decades. It’s just a dud track to drive and it doesn’t present well on TV. Nothing against the town or the Spanish. It’s there with Melbourne and Abu Dhabi for me. But as soon as Bernie was gone I knew this sport would become a corporate billboard, it’s fast losing its soul

The point about Spanish drivers is very well put. Spain is going the way of Germany in that Alonso, like Schumacher was not only their first champion but was just an iconic personality. I think the support for Sainz is better than Vettel and Rosberg (not much of a challenge), but not enough to support this Grand Prix. Say what you will about the Valencia track, it was a beautiful location. I was there in ‘09 and it was a great place to attend and have a beer and watch non-halo device Grand Prix cars, even if there was no overtaking. There’s no way the politics surrounding this event will last out the ten years. The shareholder considerations of having the optics and financial projections of a ten-year contract are also a very good point. Great video team👍👍

One reason for a 10-year contract is that it helps Madrid justify the cost of building the permanent part of the course.

Having two Spanish gp’s on multiple occasions, 3 US gp’s and for years we’ve only ever had one British GP, when almost all of the teams are here and there is a thriving interest in the sport is pretty poor

So it's official. Madrid is replacing Barcelona for the Spanish GP as from 2026 onwards with that 10-year deal. The Spanish capital will be the 7th difference venue in Spain.

Pretending that F1 cares in any way about sustainability is ridiculous and giving it any mention to it is dishonest. Environmental "targets" are completely meaningless and are pure marketing with no action behind them.
F1 has got to be one of the most wasteful, most environmentally destructive events on the planet. Tens of thousands of people flying long distance to see an event is the polar opposite of sustainability.
Not saying it shouldn't exist or that I don't enjoy watching, but let's call a spade a spade.

If you know a little about the politics of this country, it will be another great waste of all citizens' money. It is absurd and totally unnecessary to hold a grand prix in Madrid, much less on an urban circuit, it is all politics and money that a few will win.

We really don't need street circuits in F1 they ruin the flow because of endless crashes and restarts. Leave that to Formula E, maybe we should have "Fan Boost" as well.
