  • With big Australian sedans no longer a thing, buyers after a big car (that isn't an SUV) to transport their families in are limited. But one that has been around for a while and is now extensively being used by police forces is the Volkswagen Passat. The 2020 Volkswagen Passat Business is offered in one specification and Paul Maric gets behind the wheel to see what it's like. It also now has wireless Apple CarPlay!

I use the electric blind on the rear in my E Class. When the sun is too bright when driving on a highway it helps. It also helps to keep heat out on hot days depending on how the car is parked and the orientation of the sun throughout the day. Also, it is nice in traffic sometimes when people stare at you through your rear view mirror it makes it a bit more cosy and less intrusive inside.

I drive a 2016 Passat and love it. After years of Asian and Australian cars this was the first European I purchased...cannot imagine going back to something else. The level of tech and refinement to the car is something that a lot of Asian cars are only now just attaining 6 years later! This car has never skipped a beat.
I do agree with you Paul re the drivers seat, it really isn't super comfortable on the long haul. In fact I would say the drivers seat is the standout flaw/irk of the entire car. The cargo space is flat out amazing. Often been tempted to put on my Petzl and go caving back there ;)

Your reviews are like easy listening FM!😴 No not coma inducing mate, just relaxing!😂 Seems to me VW have tapped into their Skoda counterparts bin, re bags/shopping hooks in the boot & tie down points. Also the interior rear side window blinds is Skoda. Even the tiny external edge indicators. Although my 2006 Beetle has larger ones. In central Victoria where I live there’s a helluva lot of these as police cars, even in wagon guise. As for the rear window blind, obviously that’s to block out those said flashing police lights!🤪😂

Just test drove one. As a chauffeur, I was delighted that it solved a problem I'd noticed with the Superb - excessive road and general ambient sound intrusion - the Passat seemed a step up in refinement. I also had no issues with transmission smoothness - it was fine. I really liked how it drove. I also love the fact that it has folding seats, and tri-zone climate as standard. It's on my short list for sure.

Thinking of getting one of these to replace a Camry rather than look at an Audi A4 or 3 series. This is roomier and comes standard with everything that’s an option package on a “luxury” car that starts at $70k and once optioned up very quickly gets near $85-90k. This barely touches $50k and gives the Mazda6 Atenza and Camry SL a formidable competitor.

    Nice video!
I'm looking at a 2020 Passat online here in Ireland where ours seems to be slightly higher spec as standard, in some ways...
They get a fully digital dash as standard, which incorporates the sat nav, although there's no mention of a CD player, which is a big thing that i want!
(I wonder is it easy to fit a CD player into that glove box position IF ours don't have them, as yours don't! 😯😀🤘🤞.)
Indeed the Passat isn't my first choice, which would be a Mazda 6, which in particular has a naturally aspirated engine versus the Passat's turbocharged engine, while the 6 comes with a CD player and a head's up display as standard (although it only has one of its' three dials digital with the other two analogue)...
There were a couple of 6's i liked which sold in the last two weeks and haven't been replaced with any with the right specs, milage and price for me, while I'm planning to go looking at cars this week! 😯😀🤘 .
My main choice left with no nice 6's available right now is Mazda's own 3, with only about 3 of them i like, with the spec, mileage and price etc ...
But in terms of car size, the Passat is better and closer to the 6! 😯😂😀🤘
(The Passat I'm looking at also has a feature i doubt I'll ever use!
A button to automatically close the boot! 😯😂🩲😀🤘.)
Edit - Something else i noticed on the specs here and there...
Indeed while I'm not sure if the car I'm looking at has it, with it being a mid spec model, while the pictures of the car didn't show it clearly, but in top spec models here, they get an analogue clock in the centre of the dash where this car only has a logo! 😯😀🤘

The car has been excellent. Consistently good fuel economy, reliable, swallows a heap of stuff in the back and a really relaxed cruiser for long distance drives. The seats are very comfortable, and for those long drives it feels like the car just wafts along. The 132 TSI has 17" wheels, so that might help a bit more.

The interior does not look like the 2020 EU-model Passats (digital cockpit etc), is that because you get the (crappier) US-version Passats in Australia, or is this actually the 2018-2019 model being tested? EDIT: second thought, this car has the "Passat" sign in the middle instead of the analog clock, which means it's post-facelift, which must mean it's the American version (since the European post-facelift Passat does not come with an analog instrument cluster at all, it's digital). Is that 1.4L or 1.5L?!
As at least here, the 1.4L car "only" has 125hp*, while the 1.5L has 150hp!
*Which is more than the 118hp in my naturally aspirated 1.8L Mazda 6, but I don't know if I particularly trust the turbo and feel that the 1.5L with its' slightly more horsepower is more suited to the car 😯😀🤘 ...

Had my Golf with the 6sp DSG in for a service and was given a previous model Passat as a loan car and the 7sp DSG in the Passat is waaay smoother and didn't have any hesitancy at all. Engine was nice and responsive too. It's a nice vehicle but I only seem to see older people driving them. If they were a couple grand cheaper I think they would do well - at least for sensible people who don't jump on the SUV bandwagon!

it puzzles me why VW discontinued Passat in South Africa but introduced a far more expensive cousin (arteon). Passat is widely loved by South Africans as I do see plenty of older models still being used across the country. I say the same for Hyundai Sonata which is Hyundai's premium saloon. The car isn't so much popular in the country, maybe mostly used by chauffeuring companies, but the car is still widely seen in the country. They should bring us latest models of these saloons.

Kind of disapointing really as I only paid $4800 for it and its fully loaded with less than 140k on the odo. I think the reputation for poor reliability has impacted the resale values of these cars

I totally disagree with the "plain, vanilla" comments. I think the Passat has a streamlined appearance, modern grill/front end, and the interior is slick without the gimmicks others choose which cheapens the feel of their offerings. The Passat interior is plush, very stylish, and with European elegance and feel. Done right, less is always more and elevates the driving experience! Camry's or Skoda's have a cheap feel of tacked-on afterthought trying to make them look and feel edgy. Passat boring? Hardly. Passat sets itself apart from contenders in the category with appointed luxury similar to BMW or Mercedes and accessible for a fraction of the price of a BMW, Merc or AUDi.
