The timing tensioner exploded & blew the belt and timing cover to pieces on my 86 like a year ago. somehow the advanced auto a mile away had a complete timing kit on the shelf for like $50 & me and my gf swapped it mid blizzard in ~an hour. Thank God these little Corolla shitboxes are so simple

Well, he has a point. If I was gonna put my trust in an engine that has been sitting, i'd do the timing belt, water pump, and spark plugs at least. But that is coming from the guy who limped his car 50+ miles with a bananna'd tie rod. I guess everyone gets careless/cheap every once in awhile.
We just needed the engine to last 400 miles to drive it home so were trying to minimize cost and effort put into the swap. So we assumed a timing belt that's normally good for 100k miles wouldn't just shred apart like that and would be good for 400 miles.
...and problably wouldn’t rev it up to 7500 rpm. I am sorry for you guys, lesson learned

Problem with unknown engines that have been sitting a long time is the timing belts get dried up and tear to shreds like that.
Saw it on a low mileage, really clean Audi A4 my buddy bought that had been sitting for a couple years. The used engine and labor cost as much as the car itself lol.
Ever since then I've always done timing jobs, water pumps, oil pumps and a re-seal anytime I'm putting in an engine that I've not run through. I feel your guys' pain on the time crunch though lol. Better luck next time!

Belt seemed fine when we were looking at the engine. Nothing crazy or worn about it.

correction engine #fucked. honestly would do at least a belt when swapping a engine.
and as a comment to the belt not going when driving is that there is more load on the belt at idle and most load at startup as it has to get the valve train moving. as its missing and stuttering that would be just enough to rip it if it was old enough XD
