    I was explaining this to my girlfriend. Like I made it to stage 2 of the qualifiers but I told her I'm not going to actually do it because there is a 0% chance of me winning unless for the next 72 hours I sit in a chair. Because if I don't do it someone else will. Yep I qualified but didn't compete because I have things to do, and I know what it actually takes to win.

      I was mostly interested in the rewards so I just took my qualifier and went back to standard ladder. I guess it's kinda good since it does cull out alot of players that mostly stumbled upon the second round leaving the more dedicated and skilled players to duke it out as they should.

  • @Squidtoken
    @Squidtoken Před 2 dny +79

    Besides the health concerns, I also hate the issue of the time required because it sort of kills the idea that the qualifying process is truly open. Its really only the people who can afford to commit their time solely to master duel for 3 days that can win, when most people have commitments with stuff like work, family, and other normal life things.
    It should be obvious that the overlap between the best players and the players who can make that commitment is extremely high, but changing the process to be something an average player could at least give an honest attempt at would do a lot to drive home the point that it truly is skill that separates the top players from the rest.

    • @deanefe9
      @deanefe9 Před 2 dny +3

      People who have life going on and family stuff are probably not the super competitive players who put the goal to get 1st place. If someone wants to really qualify, he would clear the 3 days to commit to doing it. This applies to ever form of competition on a high level.

    I really wish Konami would consider changing the stage 2 system. Leaving it to be this 72 hour rush to collect points not only incentivizes unhealthly behavior, it basically demands it. I feel like the simplest solution is hard cap the amount of games you can play to something like 75 or 100 and keep the current point system. You still get a good sample size to average out the slides and outliers while actually making this more about who are the best players, not who is more willing to abuse their body. I feel like it would also help get more people involved. Like a lot of people, I've qualified for Stage 2 of the WCQ both years now and only participated to mop up a few event missions and grab the base level rewards because I know I can't play 18 hours a day, if not more, during the event. I'd be more willing to play out Stage 2 knowing there is a hard cap and I think others would feel the same way.

  • @insertchannelnamehere7154

    I really appreciate that you approached this subject pretty objectively. You made sure to give time to the benefits as well as the downsides of the system, which I don’t usually see. I’ve been thinking for awhile that the system is actually really good for selecting the best players consistently (why players like me won’t reliably make it to the very top) and while it has its issues I don’t see a good way to select for the best players that looks very different from the system we currently have. I like the idea of just putting a hard cap on total hours per day on the qualifiers. In some sense that might actually improve the selection process because it would filter out the people who are able to artificially inflate their numbers just because they have so much more ability to spend time on it. I think it’s worth considering extending out the selection process as well, honestly to as long as a week depending how hard you cap the time. But compare it to any other game or sport and the qualifier system we have looks a little bit nuts (hearthstone’s is similar though).
    I’m certainly not a good enough player to make this call myself but I think it would be cool if there was a more transparent discussion about this between the organization and the players

    Thank you for this video, it’s really important to talk about this kind of stuff!
    Personally, i’m a really big fan of how Pokemon handle the World Championship, allowing more people to qualify makes them more accessible without taking away the competitiveness of the event (the best players will always be there) making it a true final celebration of the season.
    Also, with more slots available to qualify, the qualifications would be less exhausting for the players themselves, perhaps leaving the more “aggressive” part only to have the paid trip for by Konami, I really think it would benefit everyone🙏🏻

    I think how cod mobile handles qualifiers works well, you have a longer time (I think about a week), you play a certain number of games, you gain points depending on your rank, so if you want to gain more points you can rank up first before playing your qualifier matches. They have multiple stages, basically first stage is singles, where you just need a minimum number of points out of 10 games to proceed to stage two which is teams where you have 30 games and gain points, and top 128 per region move on to stage three, and so on.

    I think Master Duel can just try to be a normal competitive online game. Move the point system to the higher rank, Master 1 for now. Then, top 100-200 players can duel outside the game, or make it better, Konami create an online competition, and only top 100-200 can enter to get the world ticket. In chess, you know something called as ELO System. Usually you can join a tournament based how many ELO you have.

It shouldn’t matter how good your opponents or competitors are. As a good or competitive player, your goal should always be to get the most out of yourself and always be 100% better than everyone else. You can only be sure of this if you keep grinding all the time, even without knowing how many points you have. On the other hand, if you’ve played through the first two days and have a lead of tens of thousands of points and want to take a break, the hourly updates can’t give you the confidence to take a break. But I’ll put it this way, in a tournament where everyone wants a spot in the World Championship, that kind of security shouldn’t really be there either.

    I think if anything locking the number of games per day in the cup would be ideal. Even if its a crazy number like 100. This would one force quality over quantity of games played but also force people to log off at some point to rest. Also it would discourage people from having other people on their accounts as you wouldn't need to be up for 72 hours.

    I've almost 2000 hours on Master duel and I participate on the Worlds every year now, last time I went up only to 9k but this time I went up to 21k, I honestly think it's really good to have the opinion of a pro like you about the subject. Found myself specially soothed by seeing you ALSO had 1 hour -12k point streaks at times, just like me. I personally feel that the 72 hour problem is tiring and might be bad for people's health, yes you can play less games but then you'll have to perform better which means using better cards and having better deckbuild but even that has no guarantee on a best of 1 format with coin flip. I do think rolling 2 dice each and compare the total open up much more of a chance for the "go first" or second patterns to be more broad. While in coin, there is ONLY yes or no, it's 50/50 so it gives less variation.

    Honestly, I think there is a simple way to solve the bad aspects of such a qualifier on Konami's side. Just make them start considering winrates in the DP algorithm after a certain DP limit. Not everyone plays to get the invites, and there is enough data to know which limit is a good cutoff.

    While capping is absolutely better than what we have now and should happen, suggesting capping to 100 games or less is a rather shortsighted solution, as in addition to problems like people being able to go on multiple accounts to have multiple chances, people suggesting this don't seem to realise is that this flat out just wouldn't work as that is way too few games. Thousands of people will be able to play that many games which means so many people will end on the exact same record that the ranks would end up way too congested with there being only 100 possible results (many of which won't be reached because ofc no one is going to go 100-0 or 0-100 so it's even less than that). So what this means is that there will surely be way more people that get the top win % per region than the 1 or 2 available slots so with what they have now this doesn't work.
    So to do something like this you would need one of 4 changes.
    The number needs to be a lot higher than 100 (although idk what number would be viable) but then you run back into the health issue.
    They could add a tiebreaker system similar to irl tournaments based on opponent's strength (and opponent's opponent's strength if extra is needed). But idk if I was someone who did well I'd be very mad if I missed out on qualifying just because of the matchmaking system giving me weaker opponents, although saying that pokemon has online events with a very limited game cap so I assume they have tiebreakers to decide position (idk I have never played in one) and I haven't seen people complaining about those tournaments so maybe it would be fine.
    If they just keep it at 100 without anything special, they'd either they have to increase the amount of players that go to worlds similar to pokemon's worlds.
    Or run a second tournament to cut down however many people to the 1 or 2 region slots.
    Which while would both be great solutions imo, I'm pretty unoptimistic that they'd do this as they haven't changed this format yet when its been complained about a lot from both MD and Duel Links and these 2 solutions would take a lot more effort on konami's part than what I believe they're willing to put in.
    Anyway all of this is to say that limiting the number of games instead of the time is probably an unviable solution without work from konami.

    If the format to qualify in this championship were to be more friendly to the best players in the world, we would be having the same players participating in it too often. Then, other players will feel discouraged due to the fact that they're not good enough to beat those players. Despite this is the ideal thing to happen from the competitiveness and quality of players perspective, it would be detrimental for the business of Konami.
    So, I think its more "fair" to have a grind system to this qualifications. The talent is needed but the determination is the key.
    Anyways, in the end, your health should be more important than a stupid digital cardboard championship.

      But this format is terrible for content creation, at least if you're serious about qualifying.
      You either stream it as it is and risk getting sniped (which happens a lot, Duelist Cup grinders used to change their name, profile pic and mate to default to not give away any information), or you stream on a long delay and miss out on all stream interactions.
      Streaming long hours also tire you out and make it impossible to be entertaining/interactive, which is what content creators try to do.
      The only people benefiting from this are the more "casual" content creators, as they play more for fun and not really trying to get the invites.
      Even Jesse only streams a few hours, I'm sure he played more off stream. Ryan who won 2 Duelist Cups didn't stream at all.

That should pick the duelist with the best win rate after a set number of games. You get 100 duels. Everyone shoule be ranked based off win percentage. With the competition structured the way it was there was basically no incentive to play the Regional Qualifier part of the event at all, and that's too bad. I'd appreciate if they capped players to a certain number of matches, or otherwise organized the qualifiers to take place over a shorter period of time, I'd gladly play 8 hours of Yu-Gi-Oh! but waking up at 6am my time to stay up for 3 days is simply asking too much of me.

This current process seems to punish those who do not have the ability to dedicate 3 days to do nothing but play
