    Why Reality Matters
In this episode of SDPtalk, William Clouston is joined by philosopher Kathleen Stock, the prominent gender critical feminist and author of ‘Material Girls: Why Reality Matters for Feminism’.
The view that gender identity is distinct from biological sex, and that it should have greater recognition and legal protection than biological sex, is increasingly accepted in our institutions. Our language and laws are being altered to fit this new ideology.
Challenging these assertions tends to provoke a serious backlash, yet most people instinctively know that biological sex is real and crucially important in contexts such as healthcare, sports and women-only spaces.
Kathleen and William explore the philosophical ideas behind gender identity theory and discuss the social, political and legal impacts of denying biological reality.

I don’t believe in ‘trans’ or ‘gender identity’. There is sex and there are some ridiculous parts of sex stereotypes that should never have been there, eg pink or dresses for girls - why?! The view that if you/your child show interest in some regressive sexist stereotypical things then they’re in the wrong body and need medical/surgical alteration is lunacy!

The big thing the nazis did was to get socialists and communists to ask "the Jewish question" too. Before that the nazis campaigned on repealing disabilities rights and cementing pathological and criminal classifications of all sorts of queer people, including people who fit today's definition of trans. So the nazis also asked "the queer question" first, usually focusing around sex as determining role, just like Stock.

A truly refreshing, intelligent discussion. At around 50 minutes there is a section about parenting, and I think this is one of the critical factors. It seems that the modern parent is keen to be the friend of their child, rather than fulfilling the traditional role of the parent. This creates a very different relationship between parent and child. It removes the ability to discipline, support and guide, and replaces them with accept whatever they say or want. Even good friendships shouldn't be founded on this principle. this added to the narcissistic tendencies encouraged by social media, makes for a toxic environment. Kathleen Stock is great, and the SDP need a refresh to their PR to make them better understood, because they are sensible and pragmatic rather than traditional. Traditional is not a term that cuts trough these days (even if it should). Also the term "Left-leaning" does them no good. Broad appeal, gently capitalist with a social conscience.

I think this entire discussion on trans people is a linguistic one. You can not change your biological sex, but you can surely can change your gender expression. Are male to female trans people really claiming to be female? It seems to me a trans woman is a much closer definition of what these male sexuality/female gender people should be called.

The thing that drives me crazy about these discussions is that the pseudoscience that gets mislabeled as "biology" rarely gets called out.
When you say "sex is binary" you are using the word "sex" to refer to gender assigned according to subjectively chosen physical criteria, not to the technical biological concepts of "male" (an organism that produces just small gametes) and "female" (an organism that produces just large gametes). "Socially assigned gender" would be a more accurate term.

I think Stock is unique in philosophy in that she finally just put her foot down and reminded everyone that, in the end, you've got to be grounded in reality. You can't just sit there in your office and spin cotton-candy in your mind disconnected from the real world and then LEGISLATE based on it for pete's sake. Eventually, you have to ask what happens when you stub your toe on this stuff, and if you do, then it's just plain WRONG. Eventually, even if you aren't in the physical sciences, you must let the real world judge your ideas and be prepared to be proven wrong.
I also think that she's still being too generous toward her enemies. They don't think that EVERYTHING is defined by human musings ... just women and children. I once heard one of those idiots talking about how babies result when a man and a "birthing parent" have sex. "Man" was a fine word to use, but "woman" wasn't? Please. This is about rank misogyny and homophobia and nothing else. It's about the age-old game of religion throughout history, where men sit around and define "woman" and "child" in whatever way better serves their boners.

She was clearly describing the legal definition of rape, not her own opinion on what rape is. According to Stock, the legal definition of rape requires that one have a penis (you may or may not agree with this, but this is, apparently, the law). Women, therefore, cannot be rapists, though they can be accessories to rape. However, since male rapists can now self-identify as women, their rapes are being classified as having been committed by a woman, not a man. This contradicts the law, which says that only men can rape because only men have penises. Since transmen are classified in statistics as women, this has led to an increase in the number of rapes perpetrated by women. This is misleading, according to Stock, because these are actually male rapists, not women. Again, she was describing the law, not her own opinion on whether women can be rapists, and she was doing so to illustrate what she takes to be a highly damaging and misleading consequence of classifying male rapists as women.

Funny how you don’t have any good studies that support the claims of fact from the transgender lobby, which fund them. Studies are sparse, our scientific understanding limited, & results are sometimes inconsistent. Some studies have reported no obvious biological incongruities, such as sexual chromosome aberrations, in transgender individuals.
Any reasonable expert will say more studies on sexual hormone related genes need to be replicated with a larger population of transgender people & multiple testing corrections should be implemented to obtain solid results. More accurate study designs.
In relation to the etiology of gender dysphoria, which is not known, other potential mental problems & environmental factors need to be considered. The rightful place of “Trans-sexual” is as a diagnosis of exclusion. Only after you’ve been treated/tested for all other possibilities, then can you be given a diagnosis of exclusion. Given; not self diagnosed.
Trans activists propose if gender is on a spectrum, then homosexuality doesn't really exist, b/c it can only exist in a binary - so, sexuality is redundant. Of course rational lesbians believe trans identity is homophobic nonsense when they’re told having a gender preference is transphobic & they should comply to intact men or men with dissected penises who claim to be women b/c of a subjective feeling in their head that can change.
Trans activists who have 'educated' society that gender roles & stereotypes are what really define man & woman, are now shaming feminists who assert that “Trans lesbians” aren't lesbians; they're opposite-sex-attracted males.

This is flirting with the idea that there are male and female brains, an idea that feminists have historically found offensive, but you’ll generally find you have to stretch the evidence quite far to draw the conclusion that trans women are female brains in male bodies whatever a gendered brain even means, the most you’ll be able to do is say trans people exhibit neurological characteristics that are similar to those of the other sex. Under the assumption that trans women are women we shouldn’t even care if their brains match those of the opposite sex, since in the world of gender theory sex and gender are all but independent. But even if we say that they do, why do we have to draw a conclusion that they are in fact members of the opposite sex. If you’re going with a biological argument now and getting out of the social constructionist argument, then biologically they’re still members of their own sex that happen to share more characteristics with those of the opposite sex than their peers. That’s a long shot away from getting them into the changing rooms of the opposite sex since those female spaces weren’t meant to protect against male brains and male thinking, it was mostly their penises and superior physical strength, which they still have.

    • @andykrykant5378

Current research indicates that psychological preferences, thinking and behaviour can result in detectable effects in the brain due to neuroplasticity. It's quite possible you have cause and effect the wrong way round.
But there is no way that a disembodied brain can be examined to determine whether it was from a male or female except for chromosomes. As for any other features of the former individual, forget it!
