Kathleen Stock OBE: Trans Women Aren't Women

  • It's a view held by most people, so why has it become so controversial to state that trans women aren't women? On this episode of "So What You're Saying Is..." (#SWYSI) we are joined by Prof. Kathleen Stock OBE, professor of philosophy at the University of Sussex and author of the best-selling book: "Material Girls: Why Reality Matters for Feminism".
    Prof. Stock discusses the issues of sex vs. gender and gender identity, and explains how trans activists, arguing that gender is psychological not physical, now claim that womanhood & manhood are genders in a social, rather than biological, sense.
    She discusses the possible motives for Stonewall's decision to become so actively involved in trans rights, as well as the vilification of its outspoken critics such as Germaine Greer and Julie Bindell. Prof. Stock has herself been the target of campaigns to silence, cancel and no platform.
    Prof. Stock also discusses the negative impact the more extreme trans rights positions are having on women (changing rooms, public toilets, prisons etc.) as well as the young, and gays & lesbians.

      Her book makes no attempt to genuinely suppose what being trans might be other than considering some rather trivial popular descriptions e.g. the "stick of rock/ SOR model". She also (in an Oxford or Cambridge Union debate - I forget which) used a reverse statistic about the proportion of trans women serving custodial sentences that are due to sexual assault to imply something about risks posed by trans women when such a statistic could never provide that kind of information (you'd need to know what proportion of trans women altogether commit acts of violence - same as you can't judge all males on statistics concerning only males in prison). She's able to sound very considered and I'm sure she's well meaning but despite her academic background she's far from a clear thinker on this topic. When asked whether she thinks that trans women may be less likely to pose a risk to women than cis men she scoffs and avoids the question. Difficult to discern what is actually motivating her but it's not an unbiased or unmotivated position.

Talking about trangender issues is complicated and often confusing. "Cis" meaning someone who doesn't identify as trans seems pretty sensible to me - and a bit less impersonal than "female" or "male". Have you read Stock's book?...

    • @sgodsellify
      @sgodsellify Před 10 měsíci

      @@jnielson1121 It was the LGBTQ+ community that added and pushed for the words CIS, and CISGENDER, because they don't like it when normal people refer to them as not normal, or abnormal. That is why the CIS words were added to the dictionary a few years ago. Now when it comes to the trans stuff, well saying that Trans Women are Women, or Trans Men are Men will work for the trans, Non Binary, or Gender Fluid individuals, but it doesn't work for the rest of the world that isn't part of the LGBTQ+ community. You say you are open minded, however people in the LGBTQ+ community, and those that are part of ANTIFA are FAR from being open minded. They are open to people that will bend to their ways, but are not open minded to anyone that doesn't agree with them. Considering the vast majority of the population DON'T agree with many of these trans rights. As a matter of fact, when Non Binary, or Gender Fluid individuals can change there gender identity, and/or pronouns whenever they want, but what really kills me is when some of those same individuals will continue to change their reindeer gender identity pronouns whenever they want. So today an individual could be using They/Them pronouns, and a week from now be something else, like Ze/Zir. That is just really screwed up. It not about being open, its about what is right and wrong at this point, especially when some of those individuals can change their current pronouns with the wind, but want everyone else around them to play along with their current selection of pronouns. Some of those individuals will go as far to wear a pin, or badge, or some article of clothing that has their current pronouns plastered on those wearable items. That is a fail for any society, period. Plus some of those individuals want to get rid of gender on drivers license, as well as having gender removed from some other things as well. This is gone off the rails, because this is effecting everyone, and not just the Trans/Non Binary/Gender Fluid communities.

To get them hooked on chemicals - on medicines - all of their lives, like slaves. The surgery procedures are tens of thousands of dollars and they are a money-maker to medical organizations.
      "Reputable medical organization" is not so reputable. When they commit malpractice it's always extremely difficult to get them to admit mistakes and compensate victims.
      We live in a world where pharmaceutical companies consider us cattle to experiment and derive an income from.

People choose to present themselves to the world in a number of ways and wouldn’t it just be better if we left each other to live the way that makes us happy in good faith? That being said, in my opinion compassion does not equal acquiescing to every demand or saying yes to every new development. The process of becoming and creation necessitates that we humans and all beings constantly press the envelope of accepted category and rules. However there is, and naturally need be a limit to how much the metaphorical envelope can be pushed. Restraints and restrictions can be oppressive yes, but there are simultaneously what allow us to create category itself and all that follows from it. So there is a constant push and pull to maintain that balance and still allow for the emanation of the new. 4 years ago I would have considered myself staunchly pro trans, pro freedom and I still stand by my reasons and opinions of that time. Now? Not so much, there are some things that it is ok and necessary to say no to. Just my 2 cents.

    I once had a conversation with a Syrian immigrant in Hamburg Germany. He had trauma from living in a war torn country. And he asked me a sincere question knowing that I studied psychology (I am not a therapist).
    He asked, “Why is it that when a man cries women run away. And when a woman cries women run to them to comfort them.”
    I was struck by the question because when I initially went into therapy for PTSD, I had a woman therapist. And when I broke down in grief. She reported that she felt a reflex to leave room. She said this as an admission of her counter-transference (which is common for a therapist to do on occasion).
    I also experienced this in subtle ways throughout my life as to how women harmonize with one another, very differently from men, even if the men are effeminate or gay.
    My conclusion is that this is in fact not trivial. Biological men and biological women actually respond socially differently in subtle and nuanced ways. This idea couid be overly essentialized overly generalized but it does not make it a trivial concern.
    Using this as an example, for me I specifically sought out a male trauma therapist so I felt comfortable as I went through my own grieving and recovery process.
    This is not to say that women can’t be good therapist for men or vice versa, but it is to say that a client actually may need gender specific therapists.
    A woman who is a victim of rape, might not feel comfortable with a male therapist or a transgender MTF therapist. Should she have the right to request a biological female therapist whom she feels will serve her better?
    But also I must add another note. In certain cultures such as India, who have a 3rd gender category, they don’t regard Hijra the same as women, nor do Samoans regard Fa Fa Fina the same as biological women. In ALL cases in anthropology and historically alternative genders were/are considered 3rd, 4th, and 5th categories.
    The fact that there are other gender categories is often brought up in this discussion but every time there is the omission that they are not categorized the same.

      @@tomaskaziukonis2218 I am well aware of the struggle that the gay/lesbian cohort went through for recognition and equality before the law, and I would never begrudge them their achievements. However, things have changed and now lesbians, in particular, are finding themselves vilified and harassed if they won't accept males, identifying as women, as romantic/sexual partners! Sexual orientation is a real thing, you know. Hence the equality before the law for gay people, yet women who are only sexually attracted to women are being labelled as bigots and 'phobes for refusing advances from males calling themselves women. This is wrong and cruel, and causing a lot of stress (and possibly a cause of young lesbians themselves "identifying" out of womanhood altogether. This is the inherent selfishness of the new trans ideology, riding roughshod over the only recently acquired rights of women.
      Many types of sports have only (in my lifetime) been expanded to include categories for women, yet within the blink of an eye, now males can participate, in women's sports, ARE already participating in some and, predictably, picking up the prizes. The most recent example I know of was a guy winning an important "women's" golf tournament in the US. This is an example of extra rights. Boys who are at best third rate college athletes in the US, are winning competitions when they switch gender to race against females. Second bite of the cherry?
      Some UK examples; "Women's Officers" in political parties, these positions are open to self identified (as women) males. Hate speech laws, trans protected but misogyny is fine. If you misgender someone the police will be there like a shot from a gun, but don't expect any action should your house be burgled. Yet we ALL pay for the police, it's certainly quite a substantial chunk of my CT, how about you? Is that an extra right, or perhaps it's a privilege? Pips Bunce, a high up in a London bank, draws his nice big salary to support his wife and children. Twice a week wears a dress to work, won the "Women in Business" award a couple of years ago. Talk about having your cake and eating it...
      I daresay the Equal Pay Commission is happy with things at the bank, them having a "woman" on the board. This ideology permeates every strata, from your aged mother feeling unsafe in her women's hospital ward, to anytime now a man winning a women's Olympic medal. Women are fast becoming, again, second class citizens.

    All my life I was taught there were male and Female. I sometimes saw men dressed as women - sometimes for comedic effect, sometimes because they felt they wanted (needed) to. I also saw women who dressed and acted as a man although this was less obvious because more and more women began to wear trousers and not apply face make-up. I was never bothered by it - sometimes I thought it was weird, sometimes I thought it eccentric. I never felt threatened nor did I think it threatening to my way of life. I never questioned their right to dress and act as they did - live and let live. Today that has all changed. I do now feel threatened and steer clear of "Trans people" where I can. Today we have governments debating "what is a woman". Totally and utterly stupid. I think the 'trans' community have done themselves a lot of harm. Their actions have removed the "live and let live" ethos, forcing people to take sides and the vast majority will not want grown men entering the ladies toilets/restrooms/safe houses etc. This current ideology reminds me of the children's story "The Emperor's New Clothes". It is both harmful and demeaning. I wonder what would happen if "men trans to women" were refused medical treatment for their prostrates and "trans women to men" were refused treatment for their wombs. Oh, that wouldn't happen they want to both keep and eat their cake.

    Kathleen, I can't thank you enough for your courage in standing up to this nonsense. The distinction between sex (biological) and gender (one's identity) is critical, and affects peoples everyday life. A young friend on mine is transgender (female but lives as male). No problem for anyone, we all refer to him as "he". He was starting out on a career and acquired a job he loved. Unfortunately he feinted at work and medics had to unbutton his shirt, and his situation was revealed. He was sacked because he had "lied" on his application form. The form had asked for his gender, so he was perfectly truthful, but what they meant to ask was his sex! Communication becomes impossible if words are hijacked to mean something completely different to one section of society.
    And it is so sad that universities, once so good at teaching young people critical thinking and debating skills are becoming reduced to woke indoctrination centres. But that is another issue.

    • @apebass2215
      @apebass2215 Před 3 lety +4

      How was she truthful by stating her 'gender' as male or man? She's neither, she's just a masculine woman who has had a double mastectomy. My grandmother had to have a double mastectomy and a hysterectomy for cancer treatment - did she suddenly stop being a woman?

    • @tonyprynne3945
      @tonyprynne3945 Před 3 lety +4

      @@apebass2215 You are missing my point, and jumping to conclusions. "She" has has had no surgury and she is not especially masculine or butch in appearance. She has breasts, but not pronounced under clothing. She would acknowledge that she is of the female sex, but she feels that she should have been born a man and lives her life as male. The term "gender", at least as far as the sources I have consulted, refers to one's self identity; the way in which we want to present ourselves to the world. But some people want to use the word as meaning the same as biological sex. For most people it will not matter. But for transgender people it is a critical difference. She is female sex but male gender.
      Everyday life can be very difficult for people in this situation. They deserve our respect and love, in the widest sense of the word. They have every right to be treated like anyone else and be able to lead fulfilling and happy lives. I believe that those who want to make big issues out of this, whether they are people who are of different sex/gender or same sex/gender are a minority and their forcing their ideology on the rest of us needs to be resisted. That is why I applaud Kathleen's stance.

    • @apebass2215
      @apebass2215 Před 3 lety +4

      @@tonyprynne3945 if she acknowledges she was born female how can she possibly think she should have been born a man? Not wanting to be a woman doesn't make her a man, neither does having a flat chest. She can't live her life as male, she's female. She has no idea what it is like to be a man. She can pretend to be a man if that's what she wants to do, but it's impossible for her to live her life as an adult human male.
      She is not 'male gender', she is an adult human female, a woman.
      We don't define men and women based on concepts of masculinity or femininity, men are adult human males and women are adult human females.
      Respect is earned, not demanded. I feel no need to respect a sexist ideology that believes men and women are 'identities' to co-opt and wear like costumes.
