Full disclosure up front - Robert is has had a few VWs so it's no surprise that he was looking forward to driving the ID. 4. Yes, it might be large, and no it's not cheap, but its beautifully built, easy, efficient, refined and has an impressive range. But how will it fare in a 'Top Biden' stat off with Ben Sullins' Tesla Model Y over in the US? Watch to find out...

The production quality is off the charts. Honestly. It's crazy. It took 10 years for CZcams to get this good, but now. There is just no reason to watch flow TV.
It was just a guy called mark I think, he does amazing work on his own.
I can just imagine how bad the quality would be if I tried to make such a video.
Couldn’t agree more. This was top tier stuff! 10/10 production/editing/music.
Except now, CZcams is FULL of commercials and ads. No different than cable. I unplugged from cable in 2007 because of this and because I wasn't getting real news. Until about the beginning of 2020, CZcams was still commercial and ad free. Now, no longer.
@@TomUlcak CZcams Premium is your answer. Yet another subscription fee, but man it's worth it with all the YT I consume.
Robert doing his best ‘Bernie Sanders’ impression at the end.
Mittens would have been a nice touch
The beginning I thought Bernie sat there..
Very disappointed he didn't do "Top Bernies", Biden is awful, he's barely better than Trump!
You have a mistake in the km conversion on the stat off part. The real world range of 260 miles for Tesla is closer to 420kms, not 332.
yep, the SR+ (3) in AU is 'rated' at 508km-NEDC, so *0.8 = ~406km approx. [US EPA is 263mi and 326mi for the Y]
you beat me to it!
420? Nice.
The currency exchange rates for the price seem off as well.
@@bluceree7312 US prices are always given before tax. I saw no errors with the different pricing. Ultimately they'll be different for each country anyways as some countries have a higher cost of living and such. VW will charge what they can get away with in each country.
Watching this on CZcams I cannot believe it. The editing and production value is basically Top Gear level.
We don't use those filthy 2 words in this community 😉.
@@F15HHOOKS :-D
Top gear was a comedy using cars and 3 clowns as the medium, two completely different shows ;) but yes production quality is soooo good
I wish Robert had done his usual intro before titles.. “this is a beautiful lake in ***, that’s the ID4 and THIS... is Fully Charged!”
I like it too 😀
Same
I like that too!
This show became a masterpiece.. Thank you Robert from Egypt🇪🇬♥️.. Hoping electric cars see the light in our country soon👀
That’s dope shot with you and Ben comparing specs. I enjoy both channels. I hope to be able to afford one myself in the next couple of years.
A CZcams channel? 😉
Yes it's great but comparing a 2 ton SUV with a sports car (kind of) is a little bit silly, although the range was very close, I'm getting 460 Klm (very little motorway driving) out of my ID4 at the moment outside temperature is around 13 C, and he's right the build quality on the ID4 is great.
One thing I find missing in every head to head review of VW or Mustang vs Tesla is the service network. VW is getting close to 1000 dealerships in the US. If you ever need service you can take it to one of them. I know two people that have had Model S Teslas die and they needed to be flat bedded over 100 miles to be serviced which isn't too bad if it's under warranty but can you imagine dropping hundreds of dollars to get your car to a dealer for service then driving 3 hours to return home? All cars need service at some point, even electrics.
Robert, you missed the opportunity to show yourself cross-legged with mittens and a mask on that chair by the lake! :D
The colour name „raupenscheißgrün“ officially enters into my vocabulary from today onwards - thank you!
Your cameraman and editor made an awesome job making this film. It is an absolute pleasure to watch this.
Love the fact that you are looking very British with a clipboard in your hand where as Ben is using his smart phone :)
The opening scene reminded me of the Bernie Sanders meme 😂 Nice looking car and I can't wait for my ID3 to be delivered...keep up the good work Volkswagen
I think that was the point?
I saw my first ID3 on our street yesterday. Good to see.
I miss the “that’s a ---, this is a ---, and this...is fully charged.”
It's the best way to start a video!
Sometimes you get tired of things... I think going for a little change is ok.
It would be a clever twist to say - "... and they are fully charged"
That was the best produced episode of the Fully Charged Show yet. Ben Sullins was a nice and surprising guest appearance. The split screen worked very well. Good job!
Really neat how you did the split screen conversation! Loved it!
Agreed!
A big thank you to all and Ben Sullins in the USA. 👍👍
Ha... Rob with a clipboard, Ben on his Phone. it's an age thing !!!
Good job as always Fully Charged team, the production level was off the scale!!
This comparison was fun ! 100% liked it. That is why i love this channel, always something new :)
Greetings from Hungary.
Thanks for this video! Really solidifies my plan for saving up a couple of years more for the Berlin Y :)
Strange, guess the price varies a lot depending what market it is. In Sweden the Model Y is about 220 000 sek (about 22 000 USD) more than the ID4 with roughly the same specs.
The same thought I had. I wouldn't want to compare these cars in Sweden. Not even the Model 3 is co.parable in price.
For some reason the base price of a model Y in Canada is $69000, compared to $50K for an AWD ID.4. That compares to $65K for a Volvo XC40 P8 or $70K for a Polestar 2. The only one that qualifies for the government rebates ($5+3K) is the VW, so it was an easy choice for me.
Extra kudo's for having Ben Sullins on from OLF! Greetings from a Fullycharged fan and an ID.3 lover from Belgium
So great to see you having fun with these videos!
As always: it's very entertaining to watch Robert! Thanks
Congrats for video editing and sound track! Just great!
I have too much fun watching your reviews, but you do them so well and with such personal style!
Interesting that you compare it against the Tesla Model Y as a "similarly priced car". Then you show the prices - ID4 = £41k, Model Y = £54k. Massive difference for some of us.
Top spec iD4 is the same spec as the standard model Y, same price range in that case
Let's face it, that's exactly what VW did when promoting the ID 3.
"It'll be the same price as a Golf Diesel"
The top of the range Golf Diesel was the same price as the base model ID 3.
So I'm afraid they're fair game based on that poin
Wrong, it is cheaper 49,675 VW vs 48,990 Tesla. With comparable equipment, well, and of course there's autopilot - basically incomparably better than anything from VW
@@rogerstarkey5390 the base model ID.3 was or is the same price as comparable Diesel ... you just didn't get the base model of 1st edition in the UK
Compare cheapest model Y vs cheapest ID.4. ...€20,000 of a difference between the cheapest ID.3 and cheapest Model 3... so I expect similar difference or more 🤔 between the ID4 and Model Y when finally available in Europe... even with Giga Berlin
I drive both model y and id4. I’d4 blows the model y in quality and suspension and steering feel and is more for the masses it drives so much better then the Tesla.
Thanks, good to see your direct comparison.
Try one of the German-made Model Ys when they come out and report back, will you?
There is nowhere on earth where the ID4 and Model Y are sold in the same location at the moment, how did you manage driving both of them, exactly?

Great review and production value, I was at supercharged in Farnborough on the weekend and test drove an id4 which I really quite liked, a very pleasant place to be. I was impressed by the regeneration braking, which give an adequate level of retardation for normal driving whilst saving energy. Nice to hear Kryten chiming in there, along for the ride, back from the future, via the past, to evaluate the future of our transportation. Keep up the good work
Brilliant entertainment and information at the same time! Congratulations!
The colour is “Schaterpillar Green” surely?
Tausendfusser Gruen?
No, it's honey yellow metallic. I became a bit leery when Robert said green, since the car is obviously not green...

Shatter Pillar is in Ogof Ffynnon Ddu. Useful landmark :-)
@@koonic6205 indeed : even on de German website of VW it is called honey yellow metallic...
8:04 .... I want this sound as my new text alert... thanks Robert!
Love your reviews Robert. They’re different, interesting, quirky, yet totally down to earth. There’s not all that cliched motoring journalist wank that would talk about range and usability in dismissive ways. It’s nice that you’re talking about how a real person would think about these things in the real - non-motoring-journalist - way.
You got 4.2 miles/kw on a good day. Other journalists just talk about how bad it is when it’s cold and they’ve been driving it like…. A motoring journalist….
Anyway. Thanks again for keeping it relevant and keeping it real!
I always enjoy his reviews, he's open to all the electric cars no matter what. Well, open to all green transportation and energy.
He always adds some personal stories that make the videos more enjoyable.
Hope that maybe in 5 years I can afford a second hand electric car, with decent battery capacity to switch green myself.
What do the initials stand for ... "Isnt Diesel" ?
“I’m Desperate”

id 2 = Golf
id3 = id3

Can’t wait for you to test the Skoda Enyaq - the quality of that looks like what you used to expect from VW!
Great video. Above all, I like the short conclusion at the end on combustion engines and hybrids!
I’ve been watching Fully Charged for a couple of years now - great to see how the production quality has improved since before
Oh boy. My staying up late seems to have rewarded me!
I'm more excited about Roberts new battery in his old leaf 🌿
It looks nice. Very happy you finally got to do a video on it.

Whatever it is...it ain't good enough .
Video well put together. Nice touch including Mr. Sullins. Of course brilliantly narrated Mr. Llewellyn.
Great video. Love the comparison format
Good for VW. This is exactly what Tesla’s mission statement wants. There are millions cars sold each year and Tesla wants them ALL to be electric. The more electric cars the better.
Indeed!
Thank you for posting that. I wonder how many people, quite new to the wider story of the inception of mainstream electric vehicles know that Elon was so keen to change the world for the better that he made many of his patents open source, to encourage the uptake of the technologies in all it’s forms. Yes, he’a made/is making a lot of money but it wasn’t and i believe still isn’t greed that motivates him.
Erm, I’ll take a 911 using Synthetic fuel thanks 😉
I'd take a car that doesn't make me spend hours looking for a charging point and the best part an hour charging it, thanks.
I'd like to think that intro music is what plays every morning just as Robert wakes up
great - back up to the super duper high quality out-of-your-garden production. loved the double act with the Sullins - who'd have thought he could act
Best cinematic review in a while. Thanks
I have to say, this is your best video to date. Informative, light-hearted and most entertaining. Brilliantly done sir!
Could you please explain how those prices were calculated?
It looks like you just threw in random numbers or compared UK vs US pricing.
God damn that was an excellent edited video. Thanks for this! Finally a decent video on the id.4!
Ben is so good at the trumper role. Well cast and played.
But there s a significant price difference between the id4 and Model Y.
True. If you don't need AWD, more storage (including a frunk), longer range, and better performance, the id.4 may be a fine car for you.
@@davemartin9912 And if you don’t need far worse build quality lol
@@alienatedbeing7513 Some of the Fremont-built Model Ys were a bit rough (mine included). The Made-in-China cars a reportedly a bit better. 4:50 miss, the conversion on the tesla, should be 418 km instead of 332km
Exactly! In fact, what catched my attention in the first place, was that the range in miles is bigger for the Tesla, but in kilometers the number shown is smaller. XD
Good enough review, as usual, Robert, but no mention of one of the most important aspects of e-motoring, the regen efficiency.
Just use the real world driving efficiency. For city, for a country road, for highway speeds like 130 km/h.
What a jolly old man! It's good to be yourself and not afraid to be a bit silly when you feel like it :)
That's so funny, but so incredibly true,
This intro was AWESOME!
Yet again, visuale productionement magnifique!
I’ll be saving up for the model Y then.
Same here, it's a generation ahead
Poor boy…
Dear Robert,
Thanks again for this great review, with a positive mindset . I loved it. A review of a VW Fanboy, owning a Tesla. Brilliant. It started with your review of the BMW i3 somewhere in 2017. That’s where you got my attention.
There is a lot of negative energy in this world, specially in car reviews. You managed to turn even the negative in something positive. A lot of your colleagues can learn something from this.
I drive the i3 and ordered in December without seeing it, the ID4. It’s actually build this week.
I’m already looking forward to see your next review. And , Robert .. after driving the ID3 you mentioned that car as you possibly next lease car. Is it still like that, or... maybe the ID4?
Windshield wiper fluid - 6 syllables. Screenwash - 2 syllables. Brilliantly done, UK
The best comparison I can understand is Do I want it sitting on my drive, Do I like the looks and what about interior quality? the VW wins every time so guess where my money is going. That is the only yellow car I have liked and was going to say that before he told me I would be driving a sh*t car, looks a bit golden yellow to me.
Then you have totally missed the point of electric cars. So just get yourself a pink ICE car that befits your taste and park it in your drive. You can gawk at it all day if you like. Just don’t drive it.
@Ross Bourne Then you have missed the point of do I want to own a monstrosity with a cult following or do I want to drive a car that serves my purpose and looks good at the same time.
The captions call that intro "foreign music"... Lol.
and like aways thank you for the fantastic video!!! FC is just beyond good now.
always good to breakfast with your cheery, positive fun narration Mr K :) ID4 / Nero, nice, well built, good range...looking forward to 30% lower pricing :)
Would have been nice to see you work the HUD and show off lights etc.
I think it was a 1st, and not a 1st Max, so no fancy lights or HUD
I definitely prefer the model Y weather .....
I'm so happy vw looks like they've redeemed themselves and hope they will sell well. I've seen other reviews about the infotainment system and responsiveness but I'm sure it will improve. Thank you very much for the review on the ID 4
Love the review. Just one thing. I wish you added captions displaying metric data when you're talking about distance and consupmtion (the latter preferably in kw/100km). I know you did do that on some occasions.

Please acknowledge the other brands that have also been found to work the emissions tests to their advantage.
VW may not be above criticism but they are not the only ones!
So true, shame them all! There killing us with all the pollution.
@@lucianalliancestargate6475 Screw you, money, money, money, money, money!
Indeed, pretty much every car maker has been fiddling the figures for years. They will all bribe, bully, cheat and deny that they;re doing anything. In this particular episode the topic was VW, hence the reference to their previous, and by the looks of things, ongoing dodgy behaviour, but in other episodes I'm sure we'll be critical of other corporations
@@fullychargedshow thanks for responding. Just as food for thought; do we, the consumer, blame the manufacturers entirely, or do ‘we’ need to question more thoroughly the system they worked? Much like the mpg figures ‘at 56mph’, surely there needs to be (although, as i type, i realise that thankfully these tests will soon be redundant!) some adjustments to how they test for emissions and the ways in which the stats qualify. If the governing bodies allow for readings to be taken at specific speeds/revs/conditions, any manufacturer will tailor the equipment/software to paint the rosiest picture possible under those and only those conditions?
The sound a door makes when closing is a studie in its own. Car makers the size of vw have whole departement that does nothing but testing many disigns. To get the perfect sound

Mine is on order! Dread to think how long it will take. Great video.
In China, the VW I.D.4 is about 100,000RMB(about10,000 pounds) cheaper than the Model Y. I will definitely pick the VW ID4. The quality of the interior of the ID4 is much better then any Tesla model. Anyway, this is a nice video!
In Europe we do not have the model Y yet but it is expected to be 15000 euro (~12500 pounds) more expensive as well.
It is stupid to compare US prices to European prices as in the US the prices do not include sales tax.
@@buddy1155
Do, the "Berlin" Y, with dual castings (cheaper, lighter) possible structural pack (cheaper, lighter) and No import costs, won't be more competitive?
You have no clue what the price will be.
Your figure is "rumoured" not "expected".
@@rogerstarkey5390 Building a car in the EU is more expensive as importing from US, that is why Mercedes has never build a single ML in Europe. They just avoided import tax with the same trick Tesla now uses, (leave some parts un-assembled and call it a car parts). Mercedes was warned that they had to stop doing it, so has Tesla now.
I doubt that the casting would be legal in Europe as we have strong regulation about maximum repair costs, Sandy Munro said any serious accidents would render the car total loss as the casting can not be repaired but has to be entirely replaced and that would be too expensive as half of the car has to be disassembled.
The expected price is not rumoured, there is an estimation made by people who do that on a regular basis and those people are never far off.
@@buddy1155 You are right. Normally all the list prices of cars in the US didn't include value added taxes. Because the taxes vary a lot in different states. I think the taxes of cars in most EU countries and China are higher than that in the US.
THIS IS WHAT THE PEOPLE WANT!!!: Thankyou for comparing this head to head to it's Tesla equivalent. I wish you had done that for the Mustang MachE video.
Alex on Auto has you covered for that comparison.
What a great video, really enjoyable!
Our ID.4 just left the factory! Heading across the Atlantic now!
I don’t like the huge touch screen in the Tesla. I also like buttons.
Touch screen plus the most common tasks on buttons is the best solution imo. However the buttons on the ID3/4 is probably the worst buttons ever in a car, especially those on the steeringwheel. They truly suck. Fully Charged are great at many things, but reviewing cars critically in definitely not one if them.
When you like buttons, you would hate those touch buttons of VW. They switch before you know that you even barely touched them.
Robert when you drive the Ionic 5 you will have a second opinion about the ID4. The Ioniq comes bug-free, 800v charging & V2Load. So are you changing your Tesla for a VW?
How can you know that a car that hasn't been released yet will be "bug-free"?
@@GAmbrose
He's from the "unsubstantiated double standards department".
Yes, Hyundai (and Kia) are kicking most other legacy providers butts re range esp when you look at the battery size for that range.
Vw build quality simply is unbeatable in this price segment, at least until the japanese enter the market.
It really depends on what you look for in a car which ev you should go for.

Wow the production quality of the video exceeds even that of the ID.4. Getting to Rolls Royce levels here...
Brilliant video with fun little bits.
Great show 👏 and good source of information.
The VW top speed of 99mph made me laugh.
Because 99% of motorists never reach that speed.
Yeah that's true. That's 160 kmph. In Canada I can't even remember the last time I was even close to 130 kmph.
Usually I drive around 115-120 kmph.
Exactly, who even wants to go that fast. I can't understand why Teslas have such high top speeds. In almost every country in the world it's illegal to drive that fast, it's dangerous and not least very inefficient.
👍 Top speed will be regulated eventually to 100 mph tops (like this VW). It's DANGEROUS AF to drive that fast & only a RACECAR (w/ monocoque) can handle the G forces if you F up.
[CZcams has a bot or paid TROLLS that DELETE factual comments]
@@davidsommen1324 Mostly because they have a performance version that you can bring to racetracks, autobahn etc... The ID.4 is probably electronically limited, but it should be able to do 200kph/120mph easily
Perfect panel gaps indicate that the rest of the vehicle is built to a high standard which will become evident when it's older and still has no rattles.
You've sold me on ID.4. I'd had some concerns, being more a fan of a sedan/wagon/coupe/"small and increasingly out of place on American roads" types of car. Though it's a bit bigger than I'd prefer, ID.4 looks like it'd be a good fit for me!
Also, the production value of Fully Charged has been going up and up and up and this video absolutely followed that trend :) Yes, I'm rather late on this comment, but it still stands to be stated.
