It's quite beautiful how kuma even to the end kept his kindness while facing the ultimate evils of the world. Hopefully bonney tells robin so she can share his story when the story ends and people know the truth about kuma the saint.

Something happened 1524 years ago that changed the entire world's dating system, and it had to be something BIG. Possibly the end of the "Age of Gods" like Nika. And 1524 years ago is AWFULLY close to twice the length of 800 years ago. So, this cycle seems to be repeating for some reason almost every 800 years, give or take a few decades. Something is happening and it seems to be on a schedule.. And the change SEEMS to predate the existence of the World Government, so someone or something else helped organize and enforce the change to a different calendar system.

Calendars usually are based around the emperor (including in Japan, this is still the case although Japan also uses the Western dating as well) or kingly reign, but super long dates like this in the real world mainly seem based on religiously significant figures such as Mohammed's hijra in the Islamic world or Jesus' birth in the West (which is now pretty global). Also I am pretty sure Kaido's Oni race has giant blood (ancient giant blood which is what Oars was, hence the horns). So that isn't the only prerequisite for Buccaneers (then again, maybe that is why the WG tried to enslave Kaido).

You know what would be really cool? If during the Kuma flashback the anime gets him to wear the original orange jacket before he takes the deal with the devil, then the change to black happens all acting as symbolism for Kuma losing the spark of life, falling into darkness.
