  • I was given this MacMini and it was super slow! Luckily with some upgrades I was able to make it into a functioning and quick machine!

16gb of memory and SSD will make your 2012 mini very fast. Did this about 5 years ago and still use it. M1 and M2 are amazing if you can get one!

Nice vid Jayden. Looking for something that I can just have a a basic family desktop machine to do some of the basic rudimentary online things of life. Right up my alley.

It's not exactly called Laptop RAM technically but SO-DIMM: Small Outline Dual Inline Memory Module, while the larger sticks are called DIMM ;)
You may take a look at the SMART status of the old spinning rust (mechanical hard drive), it might be critical; I myself got an 2017 iMac 4K last year and it had a mechanical hard drive and ran the latest OS 13 Ventura better than expected (a friend of my grandparents got an Acer Aspire ES1 with slightly older CPU (i3-6006U) and Windows 10 ran on that like total crap thanks to the mechanical hard drive, cloned it to SSD and it runs absolutely fine now, bootup now takes around 20-30 seconds instead of 5 minutes), however I moved the OS to a SSD anyway.
The Mac Mini's Design is literally the same since 2011, they've only removed the infrared sensor over the years and moved the status LED to a lower position and of course it has other ports in the back and the internal design changed a little bit so you can't just insert the guts of such a 2012 into a M1/M2 case or vice versa.
The FireWire port is useful to power up old iPods when the battery is drained (with a FW800 to 400 adapter and a FireWire to Dock Connector cable), they kinda bootloop when you're connecting them to USB (port and charger), FireWire has a higher voltage (up to 30V) and literally can jump start these.

Correct not called laptop ram but it’s the ram commonly used on laptops that do not have it soldered to the board. I tend to explain things in simple terms haha.

Out of curiosity and if you are not too far away maybe you can repair my older Macbooks and an Ibook.
I have a 2009 Imac, 2010 Imac both needing repair, a Silicon M1 Mac Mini, a 2005 & 2006 Mac Mini which needs a new hard drive as I play Diablo 2 on it, a screen shattered Thunderbolt display which I found on the sidewalk which my repair shop says it can be repaired, a 20 inch and a 17 inch cinema display, 4 Ipads all in need of repair AND an Apple ][Gs, ][E, Enhanced ][E, ][c, Integer based Apple ][ and an Apple ][+.
    Apple ][ Forever.

Wow. Thats a lot haha. I’m in Colorado Springs. I can do the iMacs, Thunderbolt display, 2005-2006 Mac minis. I tend to work on the older stuff haha.
