- Holger Rune has knocked Andrey Rublev out of the UTS Grand Final, beating the Russian 3-0 in a tempestuous semi-final to reach the UTS tour’s showpiece match.
The Viking took the first quarter by 20 points to 10, with Rublo struggling to find his rhythm early on and looking out of sorts for much of the contest.
Rublo made a vast improvement in the second quarter, fighting his way to an 11-11 next-point-wins climax. But the end of the quarter was marred by the umpire appearing to miss Rublo’s signal for a three-point card - a decision which incensed the 26-year-old.
Rublo then missed his serve but was bizarrely allowed to retake it, leading to a point The Viking won to take the second quarter and move 2-0 up.
Before the last quarter, Rublo revealed he was considering not returning for the third quarter. While clearly still seething from his missed three-point card opportunity, Rublo did return to the court to finish the match, pushing The Viking in a closely-fought final quarter.
It wasn’t to be, however, as the Dane made the perfect use of his own three-point card right at the end of the match to surge ahead and ultimately out of reach of the Russian.
As a result, The Viking, who had struggled with the blistering pace of UTS matches at the start of the weekend, is now into the UTS tour’s showpiece match where he will face either Jack Draper or Casper Ruud.

We were there live, sitting behind Rublev's side of the court - Rublev asked first.. twice. The bonus card lights & sounds went on directly afterwards & it seemed to all of us in that section, including Rublev, that the bonus card was applied to him.. it's loud in there so if the umpire said Rune's name for the card, none of us heard it.. It's understandable that Rublev was annoyed. The UTS 'let's make this a loud circus' vibe & its rules don't help the situation (Monfils also had a long complaining session the day before about an MTO he wasn't allowed to take.. then he retired from the match, only to come back & play another one 2 matches later)
I was there to watch this game live. What had happened was Rublev had put his hand up to use his UTS bonus card (to win 3 points), but the umpire missed it. Then it was times up at 11-11 and the umpire declared it was deciding point game. At that point Rublev challenged it which was understandable because he was denied his chance to potentially win 3 points which would have given him a high chance to win the 2nd quarter. Instead it went to deciding point and his head was clearly not in a good place as he lost the quarter. Video at 3:50, editing is cut from 8-9 to 11-11 which is after Rune got to use his card but not Rublev.
This is the reason why he went up the umpire’s chair to show he wanted to use his bonus card in the 3rd quarter. I’m not saying it was mature or the right thing to do but UTS shouldn’t post this video and remove the entire clip but highlight Rublev’s reaction without giving context. #justiceforrublev
Did Rublev tell the umpire that he wanted to use the bonus card? In The cut video, it only shows him talking to his coach if he should take the 3-card or not? Before that Rune already took it correctly by talking to the umpire. Rublev did not do that.
They don’t talk to the umpire. If a player wants to use it, they raise their hand with 3 fingers showing.
I saw Rublev raise it and so did many others.
What Rublev asked for was for the umpire and supervisors to watch a playback to verify what happened but they refused. I think that was what annoyed Rublev and he felt they weren’t being fair or transparent.
Thanks for clarifying, this video definitely makes Rublev look like a joker. These umpires really mess it up for players and I think the sport itself shouldn't rely on human intervention so much
@@Lostpiggie It's not that they simply show the 3-fingers to anyone. You need to show it to the umpire or ask him. If they don't talk or show it to the umpire, how will the umpire know they want to use the card?? It's like a line challenge, bathroom break, or using a medical TO in tennis. Do they show/indicate/tell their coaches or umpires about it? How will the umpire know if they don't indicate or ask to him?? He had to ask/show it to the umpire or bring it to his notice. But Rublev was not showing it to the umpire nor did he even ask. He was going to his coach and showing him the 3-fingers whether to take it or not. His coach is not the umpire. Before that Rune put his hand/racquet up and asked the umpire for it and got the bonus point activated. Rublev did not do that. In fact, he is even seen disappointed to have missed his chance and even tries to put his hand up (if he already showed his 3-fingers, why would he put his hand up a 2nd time as soon as it was being announced The Viking took the card??). Already it was being announced that Rune activated the card (Rublev missed his chance). His coach also asks who took the card (him or you)? He even missed or did not ask it on 10-11. He simply kept on playing. If he was paying attention to the scoreline, he would have known that he didn't get the bonus point or the scores would read 12-11. But he didn't care about it or even was paying any attention until the time ran out.
But shouldn't he had noticed that is wasn't on the wall etc like in all the other occations where the wildcard was being used? @@Lostpiggie
Rublev was super right, he lost the second quarter because of the umpire. If you don’t know what happened in the cut part don’t comment
Rublev was super wrong. If you watch the cut part, you can see Rublev did not ask the umpire for the card. Rune asked the umpire first.

@@t3nnis101 Rublev did not ask. It was shown clearly on TV and many watched replays of it. The first time, he went over to his coach and showed it to him asking whether to take it or not (not to the umpire). Next, he put his hand up (when the announcement was already made (after Rune took his). Clearly, Rublev did not ask first, Rune did. And the umpire correctly awarded it to Rune. Don't know why people defend him too much even when he is clearly in the wrong! Even in a Hong Kong match, he did the same. He even kicked the towel bucket and then mocked at the umpire when he was given a warning. TBH, he is becoming a bit of a bully like his best friend Zverev (who does things like this occasionally). But Rublev is doing things like this almost every match, and it's totally unacceptable.
Rune hit some beautiful passing shots in this match. He may find the format "weird," but I really think the faster play speaks to his playing style a bit.
"Lets go!"... "Super good!"... there I'm a tennis coach 😂
And I call Andrey the Deer Hunter because of the great resemblance to Christopher Walken, when he plays Russian roulette with Asians with a red bandage on his head. Reminds me every time! Cool Andrey and a cool movie!👍And Rublo in Russian comes from the word chop, not from his last name Rublev, which refers to the Russian currency, the ruble, but specifically refers to a fighter-slasher who, in the thick of battle, chops from the shoulder right and left. I think it suits him, his fighter’s temperament!⚔Sometimes Russians call a hot battle or an uncompromising fight Rubilovo👊
Fun moments in tennis must be accompanied by elegance and maturity.
"Maturity" is a fiction. Take that bougie nonsense back to the club. The world craves more human interactions.
@@GhostofGerulaitistemper tantrums are for children
@@GhostofGerulaitis Then we could film players going to the toilet, it's a great human interaction. No class at all, of course.
@@shiftt. Yes, 4 quarters and a 15-second serve clock is basically just like filming people defecating in the bathroom. Very logical and smart. And every time Bublik smashes a racquet God kills a kitten. Derp.
Rune had 2 winners that clearly was out. But anyway, hope this Tik Tok format tennis will not be more popular.
You prefer the older, dial-up modem format tennis, I guess. Lol
@@GhostofGerulaitisthey shld get rid of dumbass refs and use ai. We have Hawkeye. I m sure an ai will do a far better job.
Dont mess with tennis.
Did your daddy cry when they finally let black folk in? Pobrecito.
Brother what is going on during these UTS matches? Don't players have respect anymore?
Yes. They just don't have the farce of respectability politics anymore. It's so refreshing.
@@GhostofGerulaitis well said. this is a sports entertainment product after all
UTS is a circus..they act rightfully so
@@redixhemalaj8998 This just makes me want to go to the circus.
They forgot it’s a pickleball tournament
Ja tak Rune mand
This tournament should be for charity, nothing else.
Am on it 😍
Where I can see that?
UTS app plays full matches, but sometimes they don't. Very buggy. No response. Never fixed in time to watch the rest of the day in peace. Had issues two out of the three days the event ran. Saturday was the only day where I could watch on the app without issue.
What is the size of the court? Is it smaller than ATP?
It’s a purely singles court. It’s the same dimensions as any other court, minus the doubles alleys.
@@POK2008okay, cause I see the serve speed is significantly slower.
det er jo Kenneth Carlsen der er med som Coach for Rune... SJovt at se...
C’est scandaleux qu’un joueur monte sur une chaise d’arbitre, où va le tennis si on continue comme ça sérieux ?
Oh, the horror!! First they came for the umpire chair climbers, then anarchy was unleashed upon the world. Prayers up to the survivors.
This Format shows weaknesses of the second serve: this is by far the worst shot of Rublev...... Not so many players (Eubanks, Struff) can start active on serve if they have only one...
Karmic balance was restored when the Brit beat the Brat for the Bolt in the final. Draper played the best all tournament & deserved to win. As for the Gem, Ruby really needs to get his head on straight. He cracks & scrambles his own chicken egg too often & will never win a Slam with such a mercurial nature on court. Rune starting strong is a classic spook tactic that worked on Ruby. Rune tried the same thing on Draper only to end up losing the next three quarters with the 4th one being a British blowout.
Beat the brat? You are soft as hell
These guys need to grow up lol…
