This video was filmed on June 14, 2024, at Aibahama Park and in front of Tokushima City Hall, capturing the outdoor practice sessions of Awaodori. Every year in Tokushima, outdoor practices begin in June, and the sounds of musical instruments can be heard from all around. Drawn by these sounds, I took a stroll through the city.
Outdoor practices are often held at locations such as Aibahama Park, around Shinmachi River, in front of Tokushima City Hall, and Tokushima Central Park. In this video, I have compiled scenes from practices filmed at Aibahama Park and in front of Tokushima City Hall. The outdoor practices continue until early August, so if you visit Tokushima during this time, be sure to take a night walk and experience the atmosphere!
Awaodori (Awa Dance) is one of the most famous traditional performing arts in Japan, with its history of more than 430 years. "Awa" is the old feudal administration name for Tokushima Prefecture, and "odori" means "dance". Awaodori Festival in Tokushima City is held from August 12 to 15, attracting over 1.3 million tourists every year.
