  • In THE GREATEST SCIENTIST IN HISTORY: Men from Scotlands Past Scottish history tour guides Bruce Fummey talks about the greatest Scottish scientist. Few will dispute that James Clerk Maxwell was the greatest Scots scientist in history but, for Bruce, it's one of his Scottish science heroes. Bruce voted for him in the TV series Greatest Ever Scot. Bruce relates the size of Maxwell's achievements whilst taking you on part of the James Clerk Maxwell walking tour of Edinburgh, and encourages you to make this one of your days out in Scotland. He also recommends the biography of Maxwell, The Man Who Changed Everything.

Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.
As one of Scotland history tour guides people ask: Help me plan a Scottish holiday, or help me plan a Scottish vacation of your from the US. So from April 2020 I've tried to give a bit of history, but some places of interest in Scotland as well.

I read that book years ago because there are two outstanding scientists who fundamentally changed our understanding of the world:
Charles Darwin in Biology and James Clerk Maxwell in Physics.
The difference is that Maxwell was a lovely man. He took all his teaching jobs under two conditions: He'd start the academic year a few weeks late so he could help with the harvest on his ancestral farm and he demanded one day off per week so he could teach for free in a local working man's club.
Also Maxwell is the giant on whose shoulders Einstein stood to achieve what he did.

I am a retired Professor of Geophysics, who has worked with some form of electromagnetics all my scholarly life. Maxwell's equations are a thing of beauty, and the symmetry is wonderful. When I was on study leave (sabbatical for North Americans) in Aberdeen, one time I wandered around the University of Aberdeen. I happened upon the chapel, and in the entrance to the chapel were the portraits of past Professors, including Maxwell. I of course paid my homage to that great scientist, and his work laid the foundations for much of modern physics. Thank you for you passion about this brilliant physicist.

Am I remembering right that Maxwell set the stage, so to speak, for Einstein to stand upon once the latter figured out that the speed of light was constant and, subsequently, come up with relativity?
ETA: And I asked that too soon as he mentioned Einstein crediting Maxwell just after the 14:20 mark... lol That's what I get for reading comments while listening to the video.

I have never heard of Einstein making anything but a passing reference to Tesla (who was a first rate innovator/engineer but not a physicist of any great consequence) he did have enormous respect however for James Clarke Maxwell who was a physicist of historic standing.
Much myth has grown around Tesla who was without question a brilliant man but in America for people seem to be under the impression that he was a major figure in the history of science. He did not in fact invent the A/C electrical system which is often claimed. Tesla was a very creative and imaginative developer of ideas, some his own but many not.

In December 2015 BBC screened a program entitled "Scotland's Einstein - James Clerk Maxwell - The man who changed the world" presented by Professor Iain Stewart. "Do you recognise this man? " he asked, thrusting a photograph of the great man in front of many passers by. He was stood in Edinburgh next to the statue. "No" came the puzzled reply from everyone asked. I shook my head in utter disbelief. Undoubtedly the greatest scotsman there has ever been, and there have been many. Whenever I meet anyone from Scotland I turn the topic round to JCM and I have yet to find one who has heard of the great man.
I also have a great admiration for another brilliant scientist who often falls under the radar and that is Robert Hooke, England's Leonardo da Vinci. Known mainly for his law of elasticity "ut tensio sic vis" there was much more to him than that. The late Lisa Jardine daughter of Jacob Bronowski has written an excellent book on him. The big mistake Hooke made was dying before Isaac Newton.

We were in Scotland from the end of July to about the middle of August. We rented a horrible flat that was so sketchy we relocated to a hotel near Maxwell's statue. I was out for a walk alone and looked up and saw the statue of the great man. James Clerk Maxwell... The father of electromagnetic theory. Formulator of Maxwell's equations. Devout and yet evangelical Presbyterian... I looked up at his statue and I felt small. What I have been able to learn and teach my students about EM radiation has been, to steal a line from Newton, because I stood on the shoulders of giants. Giants like James Clerk Maxwell... Awesome video and an awesome passion for Physics and your home country Bruce.

Oh c'mon. There's a limit to what we can blame on the Union. It's down to US to sing the praises of our heroes.
I think the problem is more likely the complexity of what he achieved. If it could be broken into a simple sound byte he would be a great British hero. What Newton did was astounding, but people recognise him because it can be distilled into an apple falling from a tree. Folk don't talk about the connection of that apple falling, and the moon travelling round the earth, and the earth round the sun and the maths to explain it all as a single phenomena. If they did nobody wold talk about Newton

@@ScotlandHistoryTours Maxwell's insights were truly astonishing as you tell us.
I suspect the terrible union has plenty to do with the lack of praise we offer. Ourselves, yes we should carry some blame too. In modern terms, apart from Leibniz work ;) much of what Newton found has been surpassed. Joking aside he made a significant contribution too. But that we generally think of Newton before Maxwell tells it's own story. Undoubtedly connected to the whole London RS recorded narrative etc, the reputation of that, and science history capital that afforded him.
I do believe that had we not been forced into the god forsaken english union Maxwell would taken a more eminent place.
Why else is he not already more prominent. I identified that as a key point in your piece, and as a note worthy point.
      Hoots mon!
Getting a tad serious here... :)

Fantastic cover of Maxwell's gift to the modern world a man who I have admired a long time. There is another great Scot that I admire who's scientific work has been a life saving gift to the world John Scott Haldane. He devised the first decompression tables which overcame the problem of the bends in divers, caison workers and anyone else working in a pressurised environment, so thanks to him we have been able to build structures from depth without killing or seriously disabling the workforce. Keep up the great work Bruce..

Hi Bruce, all through your video I was hoping it would be James Maxwell! I first heard of him in a brilliant 3 part documentary entitled 'Shock and Awe - the story of electricity by Jim Khalili. When I first visited Glasgow a few years ago, i saw his name inscibed on the gates of Glasgow University, along with Lord Kelvin that so much of Glasgow is named after!! Gwan the Scots!!!

I recently came across your channel, and just saw your video about who you are and what to expect and not from the channel. I'm a physicist by education (specializing in QCD and nuclear physics) but worked in other fields. Figures that you (Bruce Finney) was a physics teacher - you still have a love and passion for the subject. The greatest ever is a tough one - quantum theory and quantum field theory had many contributors, so it's not realistic to single out any one.
I think in terms of a single scientist having the largest impact on our understanding of the nature of things as a whole, it would be Einstein. The Newtonian static universe was the dogmatic view for over two centuries, then Einstein gave us curving, expanding space, inertial mass, time dilation, and all the implications of General Relativity that upended the Newtonian apple cart and redefined the nature of the universe.
However, that has little direst impact on the regular world we all share. Maxwell was not only foundational for future physics, his understanding of electromagnetism completely changed life as we know it. In terms of daily impact on the lives of billions, no other scientist comes close to Maxwell.
Thank you for a great, informative and funny channel.

@@ScotlandHistoryTours Finished the book. I am not a math/sciency type, but I managed. What really struck me was that, with all his incredible intelligence, driving curiosity, and ability to make connections, he was such a very decent (in fact, lovable-sounding) man. Nor did he try to make all his students and colleagues into versions of himself; he just gave them the facilities and the inspiration, and encouraged them to take their own direction. Exceptional.
