You and I are going to drink a lot of coffee together. Like, borderline dangerous amounts of coffee.
So, first things first. Pour yourself a mug and I’ll introduce myself real quick.
My name’s Jordan - but everyone calls me “J” - and I’m a 27th degree black belt in chugging coffee.
I’m also strength & nutrition coach, I hold several powerlifting world records, and I’ve been fortunate enough to have my writing featured in a variety of outlets like CNN, the Huffington Post, and Schwarzenegger.com.
    But listen.
This channel isn’t for fame, publicity, cash, props, fist bumps, likes, pings, pows or whatever else there is.
It’s a place where you and I can chat.
I’ll never sugar coat, lie, or beat around the bush. I’ll tell you everything exactly as I see it. Some stuff you might like. Others you might not.
    And that’s totally cool.
Either way, my goal here is to create a discussion. A place where you and I can get together, exchange ideas, and motivate each other to be better every day.
Like I said, we’re gonna drink a lot of coffee together - borderline dangerous amounts - but I’m excited. Because there aren’t too many online communities in which the sole purpose is to inspire and motivate one another.
And that’s exactly what you and I are going to do here.
    To your success,
    -J

I dont think a Keto diet is for everyone. I did it for a few months and felt good but eating less than 20 grams of carbs is very tough, especially if you have some type of social life. Now I am on a low carb diet, 50-60 grams a day. No sugar and minimum processed food. I workout a few times a week and I have been able to travel and go on vacation, eat lots of carbs during that time and go back to my normal weight with no issues. I have found a good balance. Before I was eating way too many carbs, which made me hungry all the time. I had very little control once I had sugar, but now I feel like I have gain control back and I can say no and I don't have to have that cookie/chocolate at 3pm. I don't eat carbs, because I don't want to, I have no desire to do so, and that is a great feeling! :)

This is where I want to be. I think that the discipline I learned while on keto will help me make much better sugar choices once I increase my carbs. It's not sustainable for a well-rounded social life with vacations, outings with friends, etc. I hope my results mirror yours!

Thanks for sharing your experience, this is my goal too! I'm doing keto for one year now and because of this pandemic it was perfect time for me to do it since I wasn't travelling or having any social life. I lost 37kg which is more than my initial goal was. And now I wanna try to get my body used to some amount of carbs so I can eat local foods while traveling and have that potato at friends place etc. I'm feeling confident since like you said keto taught lot of discpline and made aware of all the hidden sugar in certain foods.

Also, as Jordan described, if you only plan on doing keto for 2-3 weeks for fast loss, you will mostly use water. The benefits come after long term keto where a water weight rebound is minor drop in the bucket. Source: Lost 150lbs using Keto and IF, going to eating more carbs and gained 5lbs, maintained that 5lbs gain, so I guess my loss is 145lbs.

I know one thing that’s gonna happen is that you’re going to eat more frequently because you’ll be a lot hungrier. I started keto and intermittent fasting at the same time so I know that I’m a bit biased, but one thing I can tell you is that I get hungry far less frequently and I’m much more satisfied when I do eat now that I’ve transitioned away from glucose dependency, which wasn’t easy by the way. I was the king of hangry before I started keto and intermittent fasting, but now I can go 24 hours without eating like it’s virtually nothing. I set my time when I’m going to eat, plan my meals ahead of time, and stick to it without any major struggles. That wouldn’t be possible without keto because my body would be demanding sugar after a few hours. Also, I “stop” keto at least twice a month and absolutely nothing happens except it takes me a little extra time to get back in ketosis, but I’m willing to do that for a delicious baked sweet potato twice a month.

    • @2minutecarnivore
      @2minutecarnivore Před 4 lety +2

Exactly! I also have a moderate to heavy carb meal every other week or so, situation dependent and ironically, my weight goes down the next day. I think a lot of people fail because of other areas of life being out of wack: stress levels, lack of sleep, over exercising, binging.

    • @rcs3681
      @rcs3681 Před 4 lety +1

Exactly! I barely feel hungry these days, I don’t even consume sugar or artificial sugar anymore. Keto helped control my blood sugar spikes! I can now eat carbs without the sugar crash / feeling sleepy after but still prefer to always go back to the keto diet. The explanation in this video is quite irresponsible and Jordan seems a little misinformed. Any diet if done inconsistently is a yo-yo diet. If you’re not determined to change your mindset & lifestyle then naturally the pounds will stack on when you go back to binge eating. I believe keto helps with controlling binge eating or minimising it really. I quite enjoy not having any cravings and looking forward to my next meal coz being on keto has helped me control my hunger.

I love this!! Thank you!! Here’s the thing, I’ve been doing keto because, for me, I do indeed love carbs BUT carbs are what I binge on and I binge HARD on carbs. And my version of keto, if that’s a thing, has been different. I guess you would call it more low carb then keto because the whole eating shit tons of fat thing just grossed me out. Here’s the thing though, what I’ve found for myself is that lowering my carb intake cuts my cravings for sugar and greatly helps with my energy levels. While I know that keto is not a long term sustainable diet, it has helped me to find a balance and I also know that once I reach my “goal” weight, I will gain weight when I begin to reintroduce carbs, but it’s also given me the power to say “ok, let’s go with a healthier carb option and let’s balance it out with some protein while staying at the proper calorie range” does that make sense? I totally loved this because this is what I’ve done for most of my adult life, however, listening to your podcast and watching your videos has given me the power to say, “ok, let’s find something that works for me, let’s get rid of this all or nothing mentality and let’s stick with it even when I feel like I’m losing the battle” THANK YOU!!!!! #sortinghatsquad

cody kerby yes to all this!!! Yes I love carbs but being diabetic they’re not the best option for me. Even low GI carbs should be kept at a minimum for me. And the less I eat them the less I want them/crave them. The way I feel with eating low carb is worth more than the taste of any Big Mac. I know I can have one if I want and that’s half the battle. Allowing your mind to even go there instead of like you said being all or nothing.

Not only did I Have to watch this video, given the title, but I Had to share my personal experience as a result. I went Keto a year ago and lost 15Kilos in 3 months. I'm currently heading towards my 67th birthday. My partner and I (who live separately: she was Not on Keto) went travelling in a motorhome for the following 3 1/2 months and it soon became impractical for me to continue Keto. I went back to what I would consider a normal diet which included muesli, bread etc. (and fresh damper cooked in a camp oven on an open fire, one of my all time favorites) and I did not weigh myself the whole trip. On returning home of course the first thing I did was weigh myself. Surprise surprise! I had lost another 2 Kilos. Over the next 3 months my weight started to steadily go up again, which I monitored and set myself a deadline which when reached I would go back on Keto. This arrived too close to Christmas so I started after. I included the same exercise regime I used first time and have decided to add some more sustained fasting this time. I was pretty much 16/8 intermittent fasting the first time. Just finished my first 40 hour fast. The weight is dropping again. The whole time the weight was going up I felt comfortable with the idea I could loose it again with Keto. What surprised me, pleasantly, is just how fast I got back into ketosis this time. I think it's like a muscle memory type thing. Very much as Mark Sission describes.
For me personally it seems That Keto controls my weight when I am physically less active. I am a musician and when at home am largely physically inactive. When travelling I am a lot more active. Well not a lot but enough. What makes Keto my choice is I would rather have NONE of some food and as much as I want of everything else than be in this state of feeling deprived and hungry, that a calorie deficit diet that includes more carbs, leaves my in.
Now off to make breakfast. Let's see. Will it be a bacon, mushroom and cheese omelette or a microwave coconut flour muffin with avocado. Decisions decisions. Life is SOOOOO hard on Keto. LOL.
PS: The weight deadline mentioned above was still 10 Killos below my weight when first starting Keto.
PPS: If it ain't broke don't fix it. Pretty good 'rule of thumb'

So people lose 10-15lbs if water weight from glycogen stores huh.
How much glycogen do you think we have and how much water is stored with that glycogen.
    Let’s do some math.
Human glycogen capacity - 400-700g max
Water stored with glycogen - 2-4g max
    Let’s take the 700g and 4g.
    700 x 4 = 2800g
    2800 + 700 = 3500g
    3500g = 7.7lbs.
So no, people don’t lose 10-15lbs from glycogen. This would be the maximum physiological water loss from glycogen and this would be someone which an absolutely insane amount of muscle mass. Like a bodybuilder.
The average person has maybe 5lbs of water plus glycogen.
You are correct in the patterns. People are impatient when they hit stalls.
You are also correct about requiring a deficit.
The difference is you need less of a deficit with a ketogenic diet.
Calories matter but hormones also matter. You will have a much harder time adding fat to adipose at low insulin levels.
There are many studies showing increased metabolic rate on a diet of lower insulin. Is it a massive difference? Not really but there is a small difference.
You also can’t have 100g of carbs on a ketogenic diet.
The most you can maybe get away with if you are very metabolically flexible is 50g and that is pushing it. Most people need to get down to 30g or less.
There are some other physiological benefits to the ketogenic diet which most “you just need a deficit” folks don’t understand.
What happens when you have low insulin and high glucagon? Autophagy. You get increased autophagy.
What happens when you have chronically depleted liver glycogen? Physiological glucose sparing. The body starts downregulating it’s need for glucose to spare it for cells that need it. There are actually very few that do. About 15-25% of the brain does. The red blood cells do as well and some cells of the eye.
This means less is needed, less gluconeogenesis happens and less lean tissue is scavenged. What’s that mean? Less lean mass loss while dieting.
There is far more to the human body than simply eat at a deficit. Another shining benefit of keto is maintenance.
I’ve been in maintenance for the better part of 10 years. On keto. I never have to count calories. Ever. I eat 3 meals a day until full and never think twice. Can you do that eating a “flexible diet”?
I have gone 3 years without counting or even thinking about calories and not gaining a pound.

Also keto people are exactly like vegans. They get so angry and pissy when anyone disagrees their diet isn’t magical 😂

I really like Jordan's video's, they are very informative and he simplifies dieting and breaks the barrier to entry for a lot of people.
That being said, the calorie deficit approach to dieting works but it doesn't consider the a lot of biological factors like hormonal affects or phycological factors like being super hungry when eating less food.
This is where keto comes in and honestly I hate using that word because it makes it sound like you have to either do keto or not. I lost 5kg (10lbs) just from replacing carbs like rice and bread with more fat and protein like eggs and meats. And that works for me because I like those foods. I lost another 10kgs (20lbs) by reducing carbs even more and replacing that with fats and carbs. And if you don't like the foods then this wouldn't be for you but you can achieve great results by reducing sugar and processed foods. I now eat around 80g of carbs a day, I am not hungry when eating at a deficit because fats and proteins are satiating and I just feel better. There's a good amount of research that shows why this is, look up the insulin model of weight loss but I just do it to feel better.
I also fast and eat one meal a day now but again it's something I do because it reduces my hunger and suits my lifestyle. I still break these rules 1-2 times a week when I'm out with friends, don't let the rules dictate your life entirely, I keep it flexible. But if I don't have a good excuse to break these rules I don't.
I'm 2.5years in and look and feel great. And as Jordan says there's no good or bad foods, only moderation. And keto is just a different guideline for what those moderations are. If you are interested in trying it, aim for consistency rather than intensity. Reduce carbs by a little bit and see how it feels. Note than high carb and high fat is a bad combination so avoid that but just start slow and see how you go. Don't have to do keto to try stuff. See how it goes

NIsala Herath the calorie deficit is the key, you just have achieved it through keto which makes you feel full while still in a deficit.
The science of calorie deficit doesn’t change and horomones appear to play a much smaller role that most want to give it for justifying their approach.

Been tempted lately to switch to keto to try and lose faster. I've lost 18lbs. So far staying in a calorie deficit but it's been going very slowly. Normally I would be fine with that but I need to lose about 50 more lbs before I can get a much needed knee surgery. This video answered alot of questions I had. I think I just keep doing what I've been doing. I like bread! I'll get there eventually! Love you, J!!!

I will never do Keto simply because I don’t believe that carbs are bad its eating an excess that turns it into fat. What I’ve been doing lately is limiting them to 100-150 when I used to eat close to 300 daily and I’m not even that active to where my body could burn it off so of course it stored as fat. Down 8lbs, 35 more to go! Thanks for sharing your knowledge with us.

Did anyone notice the the plateau flat line is never showing the line going back down after. It always goes up after his plateau in his demo. So that would say after a plateau you gain weight. That isn't necessarily true. If you do some 48 hr fast you will break the plateau and lose again in your downward trend. This also helps me get my mindset back on how I should be eating, not eating too much, tracking macro's is a huge factor (If weight loss is your goal), so I do agree with that. I think most people who do Keto are also doing some sort of fasting which does help with weight loss among many other benefits. I am down to my Junior prom weight and I am 57 yrs old this year, I feel great, I am Keto for life and never felt better. Huge amount of energy, play with my 5 grand kids on the floor, run around with them, do HIIT on my break time at work. So I would say this is Keto life style is more than just weight loss!

  • @corwynwarwaruk2141

A person on a keto diet will still have glycogen. They might have somewhere around 100g less than those on a high carb diet. This will account for just over a pound or two of water. What is more important than weight is body size. I have been in a keto plateau for 6 months. During this time I have went from a size 38 pant being tight to a size 34 being loose. Obviously my body composition has changed even though my weight has not.
I am happy maintaining my weight & reducing my body fat. I am getting to the point that I will need to focus on eating protein & tracking my energy intake in order to restrict energy intake in order to loose more body fat.

People that say it is all water weight can’t do some basic math.
To lose 10lbs of water weight means we would have like 1000g if glycogen storage.
Maybe if you are a 300lb 4% body fat monster. Maybe.
5lbs is about max you will flux from glycogen depletion.

Based on this video, the people emotionally unable to get over the plateau caused by the keto diet, but easily can overcome the plateau caused by the other diet, which is required to maintain a calorie deficit. How does this make sense? The research is actually showing that generic caloric deficit recommendation does not lead anywhere and causes the exact same pattern as described. The cause of obesity if insulin resistance, which can't be cured it you are randomly eating refined carbs. What to eat and when to eat is important.

I've been doing keto for a few months and haven't noticed major weight loss. I do actually enjoy it and know that I am eating wayyy healthier foods than I ever have. However, I was thinking about starting to incorporate more carbs into my diet. But carbs aren't created equal, right? Even if it fits in your macros, wouldn't having a cookie over having something like sweet potatoes still be worse for you or maybe cause inflammation or stall weight loss? That's the part I've been trying to understand with moving to eating more carbs. I also don't want to make that a normal thing because I think I would be more likely to binge if I allowed myself to have what I would call "bad" carbs.

    • @TheClimbingDietitian
      @TheClimbingDietitian Před 3 lety

It comes down to calorie balance. Yes there are healthier carbs and you should prioritise those but having something like cookie won't stall wt loss as long as it fits your deficit. Hope that helps 🙂

I have two questions and I promise I watched! 1. If a person is in a state of ketosis, but eating calorie surplus - will that person lose weight? Or are people in ketosis ALSO in calorie deficit? It seems like eating keto you’d still have to be in cal deficit but I just wanted to make sure.
    2. If in ketosis and losing, then decided to switch back to “regular” calorie restricted diet including carbs. If the person was CAREFUL and didn’t go crazy and went straight into cal deficit - could they deal with the water weight gain for a brief period and then continue on with fat loss using calorie deficit?? Thank you! I’m not trying to do the diet I just am curious. So many of my friends and family want to do it and I just like to know the facts.
