It's 2018 and I'm still using these lights without any issues and I absolutely love them. I would still highly recommend this to anyone looking to install even soft white lighting into any room. The amount of light I get out of these is amazing! If you guys liked this video come over and let me know no Twitter @Barnacules.
did you paint the room ?
Have you considered a lamp shade?
Somehow you make installing some lights entertaining.
This video was great. I love how you are just you and didn't try to act all professional with the installation and we're just yourself. Keep up the great work!
As an electrician whos spent the last 3 weeks installing lights in dorms, this video provided some good laughs, keep up the good work Jerry!
Do you use batknife off camera and do the song? I bet you do lol
i do batknife and i don't own one
I have a feeling the Nerdgasm Lord is going to reply to your comment.
i don't
Robloxs Xtremeguy why cause i say batknife when i'am alone in my own house
Robloxs Xtremeguy all good +1
Keep the dyi's up, Jerry!
I was having a rough day at work. Watched this on lunch and laughed in many places. Thank you for sharing.
I love this series Jerry. You're not a professional and you don't claim to be. It's most entertaining!
I did LED lights in my room myself. I unscrewed the old bulbs and stewed in LED bulbs. Done.
stewed
jej slovák, aj my sme to tak robili
Then he'd still have the reflection.
YOU DON'T GET THE IDEA
the comments on this make me face palm, it was a joke first of all, second of all, martin said nothing about it being something jerry should do. learn to take a joke and not immediately try to correct him
"No reflection, so I'm sitting down. Awww shit."
"gotta get pretty close" and "nothing I do is exact" ...love it, and I see you've read my book:) -like watching myself do a project except I would've dropped something.
This was awesome, i love the fact that you did it your self with out doing anything that would require a licensed person.
Grats on the weight loss Jerry. Keep it going man!
That light to mains plug thing is some scary shit, they would never be allowed in the UK, but then we are pretty anal when it comes to electrical safety.
We used to use ( and many places still have ) ring final ( or sometimes incorrectly called a ring main) circuit that is basically a 32amp 230v ( well back then it would have been 240-250v) loop with all the sockets in the building ( or in slightly more modern systems a floor) on it so we need fuses and the likes in our plugs.
Its a cool solution, and i am sure its fine , i don't know anything about US electrical safety regs.
No idea why uk is handling it that way, but here in Germany, we got 16amp fuses and like for every room atleast one fuse, and an extra one for lights.
It's way better Oo
Jonny Dahl. Its an artifact of copper shortages after WW2, its very uncommon to install now.
We fuse each plug. That's why our plugs are huge compared to EU/US ones.
u mean 16amps? and the less diameter it takes-> less copper? intresting
No , UK ring finals are almost always 32 amp 240v
As soon as a get a house, I want to hire you as my official Nerd Cave Consultant. You're awesome, Jerry!
dude this is the format I enjoy seeing you in the most. please do more of these videos beyond diygasm in this format. keep up the hard work on the weight lost and congrats
Really enjoying this series. Keep it coming. Thanks Jerry.
Local building inspector sees video. Drops by house. Tells Jerry entire office must now be dismantled down to bare studs due to work being done without permit.
What totalitarian Democrat are you voting for?
heh, actually... you dont need a permit for work in/around the house. AKA on private property. (unless you are going to dig holes and do big work on the property.
With electrical work it is: anything behind the power meter (kw/h meter) it is the home owners buisness. whenyour house catches fire because of shorts that happened due to your stupidity with electrical safety. Your insurance will be hard on you for sure :P
If you rent your house different story, the organisation/person you rent from must give you permission
Permits are only needed for exterior or structural work.
so you live in a socialist country.
ImaDAD com
I'm not working for any of such people. I'm just saying that's what's likely to happen to a lot of people. You plug a lamp in and they tell you that a permit's required.
I bought my first house this year and these kinda videos are super helpful.
Dude - I'm weirdly comforted by the fact that you sweat just as much as I do doing things like this. People never seem to understand it though when I tell them I need a change of clothes and maybe a shower after a little DIY work.
You're at 286 already?! Dang, Jerry! Keep it up!
First off. Nice video and good job on the weight loss, I'm rooting for you m'boy! Secondly, Dry wall mount screws can come lose over time in high-moisture environments such as garages and attics like the one you said already has water damage...
If you are 100% happy with the placement I would slap either some industrial strength double sided tape or velcro between the light and the ceiling, its a bit of a kludge but would be easy enough to remove if necessary.
+piccolo181 good idea! The light fixtures are very light weight.
Been watching your videos a long time (since near the start) and seen the ups and downs of the channel and yourself, and I feel like you're in a good place right now. Great work on the weight loss! I always tell people, slow and steady, and long-term lifestyle changes are important. Drastic changes that you can't stick to for more than a couple of weeks always fail, and the way you're doing it is great. Keep it up!
Over the last 12 month's my wife and I have replaced almost every incandescent & fluorescent light with LEDs. In my area, no one has a bigger selection than Home Depot. I'd estimate close to 40% of all their light bulbs are now LEDs. Lately, I've been buying "Daylight" bulbs. Love em. The soft whites are almost yellow when put side by side. Put a 2 bulb adaptor on our front and back porch. The porch lights often run 24/7 and at 8 watts and a rated 25,000 MTBF per bulb, we don't care if we forget to turn em off. We have 4, 3-way Torche floor lamps. EcoSmart has 3-way Daylight bulbs that cover our lamps. A 2 pack is under $20. No more changing out a spent 3-way every 3 to 4 months. So far, we have not had a single failure on any LED we've installed.
Smh may aswell use a spoon considering how blunt bat knife must be
Don't disrespect the bat knife.
he probably sharpens it.
+lihsor222 nope
lihsor222 Jerry has repeatedly said how blunt it is, last time he said that was a while back and I doubt he would have sharpened it without making a video on it
Don't be silly. Who have ever heard of batspoon :/
LOL Stripping exposes sticky goodness LOL
classic jerry..
he wrapped the excess around the shaft
This guy is awesome, he does videos in his pj's with zero f's givin!
Other than standing on a swivel chair with casters while raising your center of gravity, I thought you did great. The LED lighting is much better than the CFL bulbs were.
The lights look great, though. Nice.
Hi
+Robloxs Xtremeguy Why the fuck would you say hi??
GamerJetic Idk.
They do look really good, I like the evenness of the lights
You're basically in the attic, heat rises so it's not just the heat your generating in your nerd cave it's the heat rising in the whole house. I think you're going going to suffer Jerry. Like eternal air con systems running, electric bills & noise. Good Luck with it
Added several of these (and a few 2' models by the same manufacturer) around the house and it's made a huge difference, even when replacing similar standard shop lights. My brother was about to wire in some lights for his new storage shed addition and now is completely replanning to use these. Thanks to you, my family thinks I'm an electrical genius or something!
I love this DIYGasm, looking forward to more episodes. And it's great to hear the weight is going down. Keep up all the great work!
What kind of CFLs were you using that they were drawing almost 60W a piece? Those CFLs should've been pulling only about, at most 80W to 100W _combined_ with each CFL putting out the light _equivalent_ of 60W bulbs.
I also started switching over to LED bulbs. It seems that Wal-Mart doesn't even carry CFLs anymore, and I think everyone else is dropping them from their stocks in favor of LEDs. I have an LED light bulb in a stand lamp in my living room that puts out the light equivalent of a 60W light bulb while only sipping about 11W of power. And a smaller 40W equivalent LED bulb is sipping only about 8W of power. They do get warm, though, but definitely not nearly as hot as a CFL or incandescent.
Sounds like you also need a stud finder, so something to put on the list for your next trip to the hardware store or Wal-Mart.
60W CFLs give you somewhere in the 250-300W equivalent output range. I just checked his Jerry Rigged video from when he made that installation, he is using 4 45W CFLs, 150W equivalent each.
Not quite. He's using CCFLs.
I can't find anything indicating his old bulbs were CCFLs, the amazon link doesn't mention cold cathodes, but I could have missed something.
Compact Circular Fluorescent Light or Circular Compact (depending on the company). CCFL is the abbreviation for more than one type of light.
Well, I didn't know that people called the circular bulbs CCFLs since they use the same technology in a different configuration, learn something new every day. Just out of curiosity, what do you consider a CFL? To me it's always been the circular.
13:26 eloquent? Did you mean to say elegant?
JJ Sea Thanks, yours too :)
Nowhere near as helpful as yours though. Thanks speech-Nazi! :D
Probably :D
Gadget Addict YYOOOO!
HAHA speech nazi...
You will really like those lights. We changed the ballasts out from all of our tube lights in the basement (from 1964...) and did direct-wire LED lights at 6500K. They use about a quarter of the energy and light much more evenly. Great investment!
I love watching these videos. They're awesome, and a look into what most people do.
why didn't you just use 3m double sided tape???? Knowing you I thaught that's what you were going to use 8P
I almost hot glued them to the ceiling but then this would be #jerryrigged and not #DIYGasm :D
+Barnacules Nerdgasm lol
he needs to drill
was gonna make a joke about you should have Hot Glued them, but you beat me to it. :D
jerry are you going to pax?
Yup, will be there tomorrow!
+Barnacules Nerdgasm are you going with a. Company again?
you did a fine job for temporary lighting i didnt get the impression that you were trying to add home value from this just trying to get cheap eazy light in your studio worked gj
You should do more of these, it gives me motivation to get little projects done in my own home!
Honestly the funniest video yet hahahah
volvo is love, volvo is life
Dat 240...
4:49 smart lol install lights underneath the watter damage lol
Looks good man, it's the little things that sometimes make the largest impact on our workflow. Good to see you back to your old self too.
you are not supposed to be lazy Jerry! great video! this is my new favorite youtube series of yours!
Weight loss and still drinks energy drinks. lel
Sugar free, though
Those sugar free energy drinks are pretty much bullshit
+PROTOCỢL It doesn't matter if it's sugar free... The energy drinks provide calories via carbs. If you're not working out hard you don't need the extra calories.
The carbs come from the sugar man...
sugar free will be zero calories lmao
You should stop drinking Rockstar, it's really not healthy !
I really love these series man. Just a regular Joe figuring out stuff like everyone els.
Jerry I love how you did both of these projects within a day or two. Thank you.
Wow, that was interesting. Those "boards" in the ceiling are called joists and they are spaced 24 inches apart. They can be located with a stud finder. It is better to drill into the wooden joist than to use a plastic anchor, especially when mounting anything overhead. Plastic anchors are good for walls but not recommended for hanging anything electrical from the ceiling. The miter box has a lip that you place at the front of the desk or workbench to prevent it from sliding around when you are cutting material. Watching you install those light gave me a sore neck as I was constantly shaking my head at all the things you were doing wrong. You should change the title to, "How NOT to install LED Lights in the Nerd Cave". No one should use this as an instructional video on DIY. Ask someone more skilled to help you next time. You're just an accident waiting to happen.
I highly doubt you actually watched the video or read the description. He totally said this is probably not the right way to do this, don't take this as a tutorial, etc.
10:52
Once again a great video:) Love the way you are honest, and not trying to be smart, but rather just show your experience with the setup. The result looks great, far better than most I see everywhere:)
Keep it up:)
Jerry I am really liking these DIYgasm videos! i hope you keep this series going for a long time!
Props to your 2nd video on home improvements haha. I'm impressed by how good they turn out.
I love the video! Somehow I can relate to all your "oops" moments. And yet in spite of that, the lights turned out great.
I don't know why, but I really like these DIYGasm videos. Haha.
Jerry, on the weight-loss: it might be "slow and steady" but you're doing incredible! Also, great video!
these lights look soo much better for video! install looks pretty clean.
Can definitely tell in this video your weight loss. I'm proud of you, and I am excited for how much better you're going feel, and may already feel! Keep up the good work fellow tech brother!
Legit lighting sir! Well done and keep those DIY's coming!
2 episodes in and this series is already epic as hell
Please keep these coming if you can.
nice to see you back in action for real! i really appreciate your content! :)
Congrats to the ongoing weight loss Jerry! Great moves, keep it up, proud of you!
Another morning nerdgasm, I love it!
Thanks Jerry
thats whats up, keep that weight loss going! happy you included that update in the last bit. 👍👍
Entertaining as always! Even when not talking about computery stuff.
Hmmm... I think you just helped me solve the lighting issue with my green screen. Thanks Jerry! Love this series!
You've almost motivated me to finish my project to convert all my porch and dooway lights to LED fixtures... Almost. I have more advanced procrastination skills than you do, apparently. ;)
oops, doorway...
Thanks for the entertainment. Fun to watch and when all was said and done it looked pretty good. Way to go. Just a tip here in general, the yellow plastic miter box that you cut the channels on has one side piece protruding down lower than the base. The use for that is to hook it against the front of your workbench. The miter box will now be level and as you hold it with one hand against the front of the bench and push the saw making the cut the whole thing will be so much more steady. Just for future cuts. Give it a try. Congratulations on the weight loss. It's not easy but you're doing it.
Hey, it's nice to see you active again and doing stuff. Keep it up!
Keep up the great work with your weight loss, you're looking great, and sound like you're much happier
Exactly the video i wanted too see. Thanks. I want to install led lighting to my desk setup
Great job! This coming from a non mechanical/carpenter person. Kudos.
Great, 3.5years later I see this video only to realise I now can't unsee the reflection of my light in one of my screens. Only problem is my setup is in my dining room so I now have to come up with something that doesn't look like office/studio lighting and still lights the room without reflections... Thanks Jerry!
I'm proud of you Jerry! :) I have projects like this waiting for me too and I just don't start them, but you did. Also for the weight loss. Keep it up!
I'm glad to hear that the weight loss is going well! Keep it up man!
Good job man, IT IS ALIVE AND IT WORKS. Keep in mind extra heat rising will soften the tape.
For the holes, I use the packaging to make a template. Just put the box lid against the back and poke holes where the screws should go. Then put the template on the ceiling and use a pencil to mark where to drill.
loving this series so far so keep them coming!
Keep making 3d printing and diy videos like this. I love them. You're one of my favorite CZcams channels because I love to do house and diy stuff like this. Also, good luck on the weight loss plan.
I'm glad you mentioned your weight loss vlog at the end. Every time I saw you sweating I was thinking, "woohoo, DIY with bonus weight loss" :)
Great work mate. :)
"No reflection! AH SHIT" had me crying. I needed that.
I keep saying it, and I'm gonna say it again. You're looking really good Jerry!!!

I'm thinking of doing this now in my office xD. And great job with the weight loss Jerry! So happy for you man!!!

Keep these coming! They are hilarious! Love it!
Really like thes DIYGasm Episides! keep them up Barnacules!!
The lightning change really improved the video quality.
Great video Jerry, I loved your reaction to the reflection in your monitor. Good idea to move it slightly over to the side to help it. Maybe not learning a lot, but def. good for the laughs.
I love your home improvement videos!
I know this is an old video, but I just found it and I think this was a great idea
hahahaha "don't need instructions I've got a better way" said every man ever
Love the DIY series, keep them coming!!
Jerry, great vid! keep up the great work on the cave and your fitness!
perfect installation sir jerry.
The execution was messy, but the final product looks REALLY nice. Good job, Jerry!
slow and steady is the way to go! keep it up buddy!
