Being a senior in senior housing, I can't have investments. I'm frugal, I do have sinking funds, I have paid my rent a month in advance so if I was to pass it gives family time to go through my stuff. I can't keep my money in a bank. What money I save, I have a fire safe that I put it in. Yes, I'm low income. Just cause your low income doesn't mean you can't save for hardships. My medical is a high deductible of 4k a year. I'm saving for that. So if something happens I'm not strapped to pay it. I work with what I have, I'm vegan, I bought a Apt washer to save money and dry my clothes on a rack. I have solar bulbs to save on lighting every day. I budget 120 a month for gas/electric. What money isn't used goes into a fund for winter heating cost. I feel great about what I'm doing and yes mint mobile is way cheaper than T-Mobile. I save for food restocking and just did a huge food haul when case canned food was on sale. I could live 6-9 months withwhat I have.

@@sjbutler2330 I understand that, that is why I explained about where I live and the conditions they place. They think if you can save the money (which I'm very frugal) I don't need to live here. I went vegan not only for health reasons but because I couldn't afford meat, dairy etc.
One of the best lessons I learned in life, was to make myself happy. I can be happy pulling weeds, cleaning house, doing laundry, walking. I just want to be happy. I don't need stuff to be happy and I don't owe the bank or have any credit card debt. If I want a new anything, I save for it.
Because of watching you I have just lowered my internet a month by $40. I have turned down the setting on my water heater. I turn power off with power strips! And then today i scored my second job! I cancelled all memberships…. You have inspired me and taught me. Now if i could just wrap my head around investing! Thank you PP ❤
Just got done paying off all my credit card 2 months ago. Now I'm working on a personal loan, that should be paid off in May 2024. I have a side hustle and it is paying my 5 monthly bills. That means that all my money from my full time job goes to paying off that personal loan that is one of my 5 monthly bills. Lots of work, but I feel better with every check.
Grear job! You can do it! Just keep focused! You are so close! After you pay all your debt get your emergency fund in place. We do 6 months expenses for ours.
We had the same father! Lol. And my life was basically the same as yours! I remember being thrilled if we could scrounge up enough quarters to do laundry. Went to nursing school on scholarship and now happily retired with no debt and lots of assets!

Tempering your desires for stuff can make you feel a lot richer.
Poor and broke are two different things. Both reflect a lack of money. Poor is a mindset, broke is a temporary condition.

I’m blunt as well. Grew up poor too. My husband and I are retired quite comfortably now. Lots of our friends and family made fun of us for being “cheap.” We did it all on one low income. I stayed home and raised our seven children and made money on the side as I could. Saving money and making do was my full time job. Our children make much more money than we ever did but they are thankful that they know how to live on much less. America is still the land of opportunity for those who open their eyes and are willing to put in the work.
@treeintheroad totally agree that America is the land of opportunity if you work hard. My mom had 2 jobs. In the daytime, she worked retail and at night she took me along to clean office. She had no one as well and I was too little to stay at home alone. I appreciate her hard work because I learned to work hard myself. Growing up poor, I desired nothing except time with family.
I really enjoy your videos. My expenses are 1000-1500 a month and I live in NJ. I own my home, my car and have no debt. At 68 I also have 2 ebikes, one urban and 1 mountain ebikes for the trails. I am still investing and also have a 401 that is invested in stocks. I think a lot Americans are financially illiterate. I think courses on finances and investing should be required as early as 7th & 8th grade.

I am cautious about not having homeowners insurance due to knowing someone who didn’t and watching them end up with a burnt out lot after their house burned down.
My Daddy always said "Don't work for your money...make your money work work for you"
Being debt free is the most wonderful feeling in the world. You will feel rich even if you are not because all the stress and worry of debts is gone.
I’m with you when it comes to finances. I worked hard to get where I am. No help for my finances. At times I worked 2 jobs. At one time I had a lot of debts but worked my way out. Being a woman of color I was not afforded any breaks. I had used vehicles to drive. I figure if I can do it you can to! I raised my son alone and he got an academic college scholarship on his own. He is now a hard worker with a family and his home is paid for.
I have a very very similar story !
Did it all alone .
Raised a son.
Used cars.
Bought a beautiful home on my own.
Worked all sorts of jobs.

You are my hero. I will be debt free in July 2024, with a saving account. It WAS hard switching to cash only, but I’m over it now. Pounding down as fast as I can. I budget, and follow it! After that I will be buying dirt. My house is paid, my car is paid. My house needs work, but I can only work on it as I earn it.

Coming to you from New Zealand, one of the most expensive countries in the world. I’ve been working hard since I was a young teenager, and never looked back, now 28 and have 3 houses, 1 I rent to my parents the other live in and have a another couple rent the 3rd. I still work full time and invest the rest in the stock market while living below my means. I plan to have all the mortgage paid off and have full financial freedom at at the age of 35. The average house price in NZ Is about 550k for a fixer upper. All of these houses needed a lot of work which I did myself. So you can achieve anything if you put your mind to!
I have a friend who has given her husband control of their finances. He isn't good with money and she frets all the time about what he's spending but she doesn't take responsibility for knowing what the bank balance is. Don't put your head in the sand because the time you get the wake up call - it's too late.
In my home my husband takes control of my finances but he is very responsible he bought us a paid for house 2 yrs ago few months after we got married, im a spender so is hard for me.
I grew up in a very poor family and no food stamps. I have to laugh when people say how poor they are in this day.
Actually, health care expenses, and college expenses make these times tougher.

I know that these days are tough and I don't mean to make light of what people are going through. I watched my mom struggle to pay the bills. There was no extra money for anything. We ate a lot of beans and homemade bread.

Trade school! Inexpensive and can be very valuable. Becoming a skilled welder can bring lots of income, esp as a side hustle.

The one exception where it’s NOT the person’s fault if they go into debt is if they get hit by an unexpected medical bill that insurance won’t cover. In that case it’s our healthcare system we should blame.
I think it has something to do with aging. When you're young, you want the home, car, clothes, electronics, vacations, etc...but as I've gotten older and had all those things, they're not important anymore. I don't own anything and spend very little. I don't care about getting rich. Now all I want is enough cash to afford a clean, safe place to live and pay the bills. I want to live out my remaining days in peaceful quiet, taking long walks, eating good food and enjoying a cool breeze. What more do you really need?
I’ve recently stopped frivolous shopping. I love estate sales, thrift stores auctions etc . While I often would buy things to sell I would often tend to buy things for myself and that snowballed into a house full of crap. I started selling stuff and donated a bunch and I’m still working on it but the main thing is I stopped buying ! And over the last few months I was able to save 500$ which I used to pay off some credit debt .

I don't think giving up home owners insurance under any circumstance is wise.
If you have a mortgage, you HAVE to have homeowner's insurance.
i have cut all expenses , but you can be debt free until a health crisis happens to you. I know. my situation now alot of insurance you are responsible for your premium + many things your health insurance does not cover you only find this out afterwards when your going thru it

I grew up with 2 sisters. Mom was a stay at home mom and dad worked. They made sure we ate well and were dressed well. Mom bought our clothes at thrift stores and we got 2 brand new outfits every school year. Mom planted a garden and we ALWAYS ate home cooked meals. When my husband and I first got married we had zero money because of his debt. He sold his plasma so we could get 10.00 to eat and so I fully understand how to S-T-R-E-T-C-H a dollar. Im 64 and retired now and STILL have to be very frugal, but its not really hard. You learn to make do with what you have.

Truer words have never been spoken. Since I was young, I was always a future planner. I would save up babysitting money to buy the bike I wanted and for my own clothes so I wouldn’t have to wear what my Mom thought was pretty. I never wanted to rely on anyone else so I vowed to work as many jobs as it took so I would never have to ask my parents for money. And I never wanted to worry about money so I got out of car payments and mortgages (unless there were advantageous deals). Have always contributed to IRAs and put maximum into 401k. Retired at 57 and no worries and I’m still frugal and enjoy finding ways to save money even though I could spend a whole lot more. You can do it! Live under your means and save your raises.
Yep. Same here with a lot of this. I got the Pell grant for my undergrad. Add to that the fact that my mother had/still has a terrible mindset for money (bought a fancy sports car at high interest but didn’t make rent payments and we got evicted - twice) and a gambling problem. I struggled with financial literacy because I had none and had to teach myself and have finally made gains, but I struggle with the scarcity mindset and with this impulse to spend if I have extra money/living in the now mentality. I literally felt something akin to panic when I started building my savings. I can’t explain it. Luckily I have some very money savvy friends that I look to and try and emulate, and I seek out videos like this to get my head straight.

Yes! Right you are! There are 2 ways to create wealth: 1) Not to waste money on things/ hobbies/ food/ etc. you really don't need 2) assets/ investments/ Mutual Funds/ property/ land/ etc. (no fixed deposit will help YOU create wealth).
During Covid, I suddenly learned how to cut my husband's hair! LOL! We have saved a fortune on this! I cut my hair myself. 😅 I mend my clothes myself. I cook myself (we don't eat out). I am in the process of decluttering my flat (so much free space came out!)...

Your story of the 6 dollars costing you a free education is part of what is wrong with this system of rewarding the hoarders of resources while keeping the poor from moving up.
I was too young and didn’t know about scholarships. If I knew I would have gone a different direction and it would have been free. The poor have the same access to them as anyone else

I love that you mentioned living in a van in order to get out of debt. I'm usually considered a low life or the scourge of the earth. Or worse than a Serial killer. Because I live in a van. I need to get out of debt I was in a lot of debt. Thanks to circumstances in my life that I could not control. Covid. Injuries not being able to work but not qualifying for disability. both of my parents becoming unexpectedly ill and passing away. Within an eight month span. I am asked a lot of debt I need to get back out of debt. I do that a whole lot quicker in a van than I do paying over $2,000 a month for an apartment I guess it's not for everybody but I love that you brought that up as a valuable option as a way to save money and get out of debt thanks for that .
What can I say Princess.. I REALLY Like your style. Just DO it. Many years ago an old friend told me I was So LUCKY... but it was all about having a Long "Time Horizon". I learned to PUT OFF my desires to gain something more worth while in the future.

I would like to see more budget food challenges if you have time friend😊 I think you did like $30 a week for a month and whatever you had leftover you kept the change and receipts to show people much they could save and how much they would have left over if they just planned ahead and stuck to the plan. And then see the end result. Did you show that? How much money you had left over at the end of The 4 week challenge and how much food do you had left.? I think I can't find the last episode of that challenge

🌱 I got my FIRST FRUIT TREE‼️ I’m so excited, my daughter-in-law was somewhere last weekend and they gave away FREE FRUIT TREES. I got a pear tree. My yard is smaller but very sunny. Next year I’ll be eating 🍐 pears

You must have two pears minimum for cross pollination. Otherwise you'll have no pears unless you have a neighbor that has one. You also must trim the suckers from the top of the tree every year in early spring. I have two asian pears.

The thing with home owners insurance is that a lot of cities have an ordinance that says you have to carry home owners insurance.
I've never heard of a city requirement, but codes requiring properties to be rebuilt... after a catastrophe. Are city requirements in response to the unprecedented disasters the USA has experienced over the past decade?

There is so much opportunity here in the US. If you say you can't make it here, you can't make it anywhere. It will be rough to get yourself out of a financial mess, but if you're willing to work, you can succeed in improving your life. There are some situations that require outside help. Use those resources available to you.
Don't forget about medical debt! It can be almost impossible to recoup from medical debt, especially if one's health remains impaired or continues to decline.

There are social services that can help with medical debt and bills, but you have to meet income requirements and you can't have a lot of assets.

About a month ago I looked at some US currency I had and paused. I looked at it and thought "do I want money or materials"? Money is becoming increasingly worthless. I spent the money and got the materials.
We are now debt free. It's a nice freeing feeling not to have to worry about money. Auto insurance runs us about $85/month. Homeowners runs about the same. I invest a lot now.

Where do you live? In Texas ALL of our insurance keeps going up. At least we’re debt free too; that sure helps.
My ex Husband is brilliant. He grew up poor and literally in rags. He applied for scholarships and grants and went to a trade school for 2 years. He got a job for Exon in Wyoming, paid cash for a dumpy trailer and pickup. He lived with that and duct taped furniture for 10 years. He invested almost all of his paychecks into his companies retirement plan and into other funds. When he was 30 years old, he had $850,000. He continued living frugality and investing. Occasionally getting good deals on furniture and a better truck. He always worked overtime, when the company allowed it, because it was triple pay per hour. He didn’t grow up with financial education, only knowing frugality, but it was investments that got him to where he is. I will say, good on him.😊
My husband also volunteered for overtime to get as much triple-time as possible. He worked sooo hard. I don’t know if the generation coming up is willing to work that hard.

Mint mobil told me they cant do my area. I also now stay out of thrift shops even tho i got prep item like blankets for SHTF n maybe no heat, candles $1, oil lamps$3-$5, esp warm clothes. All were way cheaper, $5 or less ,but i think i hav enough that i could share if needed.
I’ve been feeling bleak about my finances. I had to take on debt for a roof and furnace last year and we have other medical bills etc. I feel like I already lived a very frugal life and I didn’t know what else I could cut. Thanks for sharing your story again. It reminds me to keep at it and not give up. I’ll look at the budget again this weekend and figure out what to cut to pay off these debts faster.

I got rid of cable and got the Roku box! I love it. I am going to look into Mint Mobile next. Thank you! I love your channel. I grew up in the middle class and everything was very middle! I had to wait for things I wanted or work for it. I also know what it is like to be down and out. I got out of debt and buy most of my stuff at garage sales. I have not been to a mall in years. No need for it anymore. I drive an eleven year old Camry. I cringe when I see people driving a new Tesla or any luxury car. The maintenance costs are sky high. Medical costs and just about everything are rising and we need to be so careful as we get older.
I enjoy the comment that Warren Buffet told someone that had asked him about his portfolio at one time losing millions of dollars and he commented that he hadn't lost any money because you only lose when you sell so you hold and the price will go back up

I totally agree! CANT never did shit! I wanted a home on my property so I put everything in storage quit my chintzy office job and became a over the road trucker, why? Because I could live in my truck , save my $ and great thing about trucking you can live anywhere! I worked hard but had family who were calling asking for $ ( grown kids) it took me 15 years to pay off my home…I had to cut the purse strings . I taught my step kids how to get a home, they work at Pizza Hut have a home and pay less on house payment than a studio 300 sq ft apartment. It takes stop saying you can’t and get up and do! And with the Lord in your life there is nothing you can’t accomplish!
You're a can do person. Did you have to rent storage or were you able to store stuff on your land?
It is psychologically hard to invest when you have worked hard for your money and are intelligent enough to know that there is a risk involved in investing. Everyone has a different threshold for risk. It is ok to work hard, spend little and save the rest. Better than putting your head in the sand and just spending. Just my two cents worth.
This! If you grew up in a lower socioeconomic background - transitioning to a growth mindset almost requires a complete neurological reprogramming… or a lot of therapy!!

Thank you for a very informative video. I have had solar panels on my roof, we have gotten rid of my gas supply, now all electric. I receive free food for doing favours for people, which saves them money. I shall look into investing, and I have downloaded the Roku and Pluto app onto my smart tv, but I do pay for Amazon Prime.
I bought my first condo in 2010 w 10% down the company I worked for closed 2 years later and I could not find a job paying high enough to keep the condo. I finally have found work years later but I can’t afford to buy it’s so expensive now so I rent and contribute to 401k best I can. Not sure what else I could do.
It is said money does not grow on trees however the streets are paved in gold. We have to look-for the opportunity!
I grew up poor/lower middle class, so I can definitely relate to accepting that you probably wouldn't get what you wanted, unless maybe someone got it for you for Christmas or a birthday. I started working when I was 13 so I could earn money for things I wanted to do and get for myself. I still have the same mentality as far as being able to live on and live with very little.
