It was a product of its time back when sociopolitical nonsense wasn't strangling creativity, but also when common sense was plentiful enough to recognize you don't need crass to show a character is evil.
One thing I've grown to appreciate about Invader Zim is that even though it is a kids show, it always committed to the fact that Zim, despite being the protagonist, is still very unambiguously the villain. He doesn't go through a redemption arc where he becomes good, and the show doesn't cop out by making the other characters assholes to make him more likeable in comparison (basically making him a good guy with extra steps). He's evil and is trying to take over Earth. We root for him not necessarily because he's likeable and "deserves" to succeed, but because he's an underdog who is clearly trying so hard to achieve his goal, but is always victim to bad luck and his own hubris.
His personality and voice definitely boost him in my opinion in a likability scale. All the main and supporting characters just have a good flavor not mattering if they are bad or good
Imagine for a moment that Zim learned even one real Earth slur and realized that it offended and bothered people. He wouldn't have the self awareness to know the kind of attention that speaking that way would draw to him, he'd just see that it got a reaction. So, he wouldn't stop fucking using it. I like to think that Irken PAK translators have no accurate meaning for certain insults in a backwater cesspool planet they barely knew existed in the first place. Things like "stink worm" or "dirt beast" probably have actual Irken words attached to them, but are the closest translation to English that it gets.
something interesting I've noticed is that zim actually gets better at english as the series goes on. Like he immediately introduces himself as a "human worm baby" but then never uses that again, presumably because he learns the word kid or child.
The Character with the happiness probe, Nick, showed up shortly after Nickelodeon had been telling Jhonen Vasquez, (author of the show and so, so much more) to reign it in somewhat, and blocked some of his creative choices. It was incredibly petty, and I love it

It's honestly really cool how he went from this in the (2000s? or late 90s?) being a really big cartoon, I loved watching for Zim's voice and for his voice actor, to be in Helluva boss. I'm really happy Richard is still big in the voice acting community even today. I know he did some other voices but those 2 are the ones I can think of at the moment.

One of the 12-year-old villains in a fake cartoon show I made up called Wichel (named Veronica Porter) is a bit of a human version of this. She not only believes in aliens, but also thinks they're all evil invaders to be exposed and destroyed. She sees them as filthy monsters, and calls the well-meaning, not evil alien protagonist and her (also non-evil) family filthy aliens, alien scum, filthy alien scum, disgusting space creatures, calls the well-meaning alien protagonist filthy space girl, other stuff like that.

Jhonen's first succesful comic was "Johnny The Homicidal Maniac". That title alone should tell you he isn't well-adjusted, but he is certainly morbid and funny.
Back then the creator was more... jaded? Like bro, look at his earlier comics, like the heckin homicidal maniacs shiz. But after Zim ended and he just did other things. Time passed and while still having that sick humor and sharp artstyle, he became more.. uh, normal? Just better content with life I could say.

That’s probably true now, pre 2013 it was still mostly an obscure cult classic . The only people paying attention to it where people who had watched it several hundred times. The Netflix thing was really what kicked off everyone else noticing it

I like to think that Irken PAK translators have no accurate meaning for certain insults in a backwater cesspool planet they barely knew existed in the first place. Things like "stink worm" or "dirt beast" probably have actual Irken words attached to them, but are the closest translation to English that it gets.
something interesting I've noticed is that zim actually gets better at english as the series goes on. Like he immediately introduces himself as a "human worm baby" but then never uses that again, presumably because he learns the word kid or child.
The Character with the happiness probe, Nick, showed up shortly after Nickelodeon had been telling Jhonen Vasquez, (author of the show and so, so much more) to reign it in somewhat, and blocked some of his creative choices.
It was incredibly petty, and I love it

Racism is more about bigotry towards subcategories within a collective (Humans is the collective species, race is one of our many subcategories alongside culture, nationality and whether we say it jif or gif). It's honestly really cool how he went from this in the (2000s? or late 90s?) being a really big cartoon, I loved watching for Zim's voice and for his voice actor, to be in Helluva boss. I'm really happy Richard is still big in the voice acting community even today. I know he did some other voices but those 2 are the ones I can think of at the moment.

He's the playable character in the Psychonauts series, too. Actually, the developers were so aware of the cult following for Invader Zim that they made a nod to it in Psychonauts 2, by calling in GIR's original voice actor for a similar-but-different role in their own story world. They totally knew what they were doing and it's glorious to be in on the reference.
