- Motown Monday! A lovely heartfelt ballad from Gladys & The Pips...
In retrospect "Neither One Of Us (Wants To Be The First To Say Goodbye)" is imbued with irony as it was the last great Motown single from Gladys Knight & The Pips before they moved to Neil Bogart's Buddah Label.
The band felt unappreciated and unimportant under Berry Gordy's rule who was spending most of his energies on pushing The Supremes and Diana Ross. Gladys & The Pips were not allowed to record with hitmakers Holland-Dozier-Holland. She says that it had to "with the family and how you got along with the upper echelon acts like Smokey Robinson and Diana Ross". Gladys was against signing with Motown, but she was outvoted by the Pips and were promptly relegated to Motown's lesser label, Soul.
After having fourteen top 40 hits with only two other top 10 hits, the band wanted to expand and incorporate gospel, country and blues but Berry Gordy was not convinced it would work. Their Motown contract was coming to an end and then Gladys secretly signed with Neil Bogart and began to record their first album for Buddah.
In Larry Harris' biography of Casablanca Records "And Party Every Day" he relates that Neil Bogart had signed her and to helped prepare for her next album by having his Buddah promo people quietly work "Neither One Of Us" to radio. "It was tricky work, but we managed to promote the single and it eventually sold over a million copies, peaking at #2 on the charts and taking home a Grammy." It set the scene for the #1 hit "Midnight Train To Georgia" and a spate of hits that enhanced the group's appeal.
Both "Midnight Train" and "Neither One Of Us" were written by Jim Weatherly, a writer that Gladys Knight championed. His lyrics with her emotionally charged vocals went straight for your heart. - Hudba
I worked...my entire career in "the industry" in music production... literally coast to coast. I've recently retired but still spend a few hours a day in my studio which we've converted a part of into a live music venue for any jazz artists that may be passing through our region...but I digress...
What amazes me is that even there's no doubt Aretha was a one in a million artist, but Gladys Knight's musical finesse, her ability to augment, develop, and breathe life into a musical narrative to fulfill its optimum potential... not to mention the timbre, rich, soothing tone, and impeccable control of her voice... .. the full range of dynamic nuances she seems to effortlessly articulate and find the perfect place to apply... creating an actual, magical place.. a dimension that listeners may close their eyes and take a journey to find themselves escaping into the melodic narrative.. and to my ears, one of the most musically engaging and listenable voices ever recorded... it amazes me that Gladys is not the name first mentioned when "the greatest", "the best", or "the Queen of Soul"... is mentioned and not the de facto consensus and indisputable answer to "who is" questions when those subjects are discussed.
I don't listen to a lot of female vocal music. My ears are sensitive to certain fundamental tones in upper mid frequency ranges if they don't have plenty of harmonic overtones.. Coltrane's tone hurts my ear but I love Coleman Hawkin's sax. Celine Dion to me has no tone and not musical to my ears. Sara Vaughn is brilliant but not fond of her tone, Same with Dinah Washington and Aretha.... But it's not just great tone or great technical abilities, ..there has be be that intangible.... Over the years I've found myself drawn to female singers who have the extra magic within... I like some music of Kathleen Battle (what a thrill with Wynton), Roberta Flack, Paula Cole, Lena Horne, Anita Baker, Chaka Khan, Fione Apple (just brilliant), Amy Winehouse, Ella Fitzgerald, Joni Mitchell (just 2nd and third LP's), Dusty Springfield, Flora Purim, Nora Jones, , Erica Badu (not the greatest voice but she becomes the music), and if it were just the song in this video and "Midnight Train", that alone would be enough to convince me , without doubt, who has the greatest female singing voice.
It'll always be a mystery to me why Gladys is not the top of every greatest or best "list". If one simply takes time to hear the difference... no one else is close...she is the Tom Brady, Leo Tolstoy, Serena Williams, Louis XIV, Jackie Joyner-Kersee, Michael Jordan, Muhammad Ali, Joan of Arc, Leonardo daVinci, Catherine the Great, and Elizabeth Barrett Browning of all female singers.

Gladys Kinght has one of those distinct voices that comes around once in a lifetime. What a singer! Saw her in one of those singing talent shows & she blew every young contestant out of the water. Her presence, her grace & still had the pipes (not the Pips, no pun intended). No doubt she still is a superstar. She had a new song a couple of years ago that sounded great but I never saw the album come out.
