- Hurricane Ian crashes into Ponce Inlet Florida causing Major Damage and leaves famous surfing beach unrecognizable. The impact of the storm on the east coast was underestimated and the residents were left without power amidst major flooding.
My heart goes out to everyone in Ponce Inlet. My mom lived there for 50yrs. I’ve been coming there for 40yrs myself. It will never be the same. 😥😥😥
The sand will probably build up substantially , but hard to tell how fast , but it'll be pretty again soon enough.

Thank goodness for those dunes. It took nearly 15 years to rebuild the dunes and beach from the 2004 season, and this is so much worse. Prayers for all living there. I grew up in NSB and sold in 2017. Breaks my heart seeing these images, but I know the area and people will recover stronger.
The beach is still there. What we like to call a beach, as humans, is gone....DOn't rebuild. Let the beaches return to their normal dynamic status. Just think how wonderful it would be to visit, if we had a half mile barrier with a moratorium on building on all coastal areas.

Absolutely only I'm more like 1-3 mis no development or just use existing Wells septics that can be used for RV access that way can still be used enjoyed just no build anything , same as restaurants have mobile caters lots n just all be movable , evac at earlier times for eldey children etc .

Hurricanes happen. This is awful. But....this is not the end of the world. There was a major flood in 1977 in my town. You manage to claw back, though it will never be the same. Pity and sympathy to everyone involved.
Galveston did. They raised the entire island 17 feet up and built a seawall. And that was in 1900.
Our vacation home is gone, our restaurants are gone. Every time I see this,the tears just start.

LOCAL RAIN TOTAL in Wilbur by the sea near Ponce inlet... We , at two ( 2 ) locations over a period of approximately 40 hours on Toronita Ave recorded 38" inches of rainfall near river , absent of direct seaspray , or river spray .. this could ( possibly ) be the highest rain total from the storm in the entire state . In this particular post a 36 hr. total of nearly 30 inches was received in New Smyrna Beach , FL . The fresh water flooding at several locations IN PONCE INLET inundated numerous homes surpassing 28" inches from Francis in 2004 and higher fresh water flooding by a foot in Ponce inlet recorded in Ian . also notable higher in Port orange areas by feet not inches from possibly tidal clogging in spruce creek and canals along with the Ian rainfall . WEST PORT ORANGE , FL . - Water was 4 feet above avocado 🥑 rd. bridge at tomoka farms road in west Port orange which was unforseen.

It's very disheartening to view all the development.
You probably know already. You might consider relocating or at least departing during hurricane season. They will rapidly increase in intensity, severity and duration partly due to rising ocean temperatures and rising sea levels from Arctic and glaciers melting..
@@Vbluevital the turtles are generally long gone by mid to late September. the August storms and early Sept are the biggest threat to the nest.
@@Vbluevital I've been here 43 years and am on high ground and surrounded by live oaks I planted years ago so relocating temporarily is ludicrous and i am not a global warming activist as I'm still trying to figure out exactly why Florida was underwater 10,000 years ago . I am wondering about the ballooning 🎈 emissions from coal and natural gas fired plants in the future for these useless electric cars that people can't drive in freezing as hell weather and being car jacked for copper and batteries also polluting the landscape and being stolen . Mine more coal and drill more gas for the charging stations , and more mines for copper , cobalt and lithium for deadly toxic batteries.🙂

Thank God for the sand dunes they did exactly what they were supposed to do they protected Ponce Inlet and that we have been thankful for

I live over in Tampa Bay area. Not much damage here but my favorite spots on the east coast got hit, like Ponce Inlet. Thanks for the video. Is Smyrna Park as damaged. Walking the boardwalk was good exercise. Hope everyone best wishes and support.

Dunes did the job for sure .. thinking the wood debris at the ramp probably slowed the surge through there a little, it just flows thru the park on A1A to the side of inlet . 82 was worse
Oh my goodness, this pass winter I spent many happy days here . So, sad to see this beautiful area devastated makes me want to cry. Oh my dear lord ! It’s beyond belief that that hurricane did this damage . My heart breaks for Florida and it’s people.
Who built that lifeguard stand? That dude needs to build everything.

It's going to take a lot of time and money to make repairs to Ponce, New Smyrna, Daytona, Flagler, beaches. 😞
Port Orange sustained massive flooding in many neighborhoods. Everything inside their houses was ruined. Cars underwater. Sewage backed up in homes. All gone.
We conducted dune surveys at Ponce Inlet and measured 10 years of data to determine changes in dune height, location, etc. Looks to me like just about everything we measured no longer exists! WOWZA!! What a change!

All those boardwalks washed away, the big sand dunes gone, I have pictures of myself on one of those boardwalks from the park at Ponce Inlet facing the jetty right there, I can't believe the Hurricane changed the shoreline geographically. It'll take years to recover, and the beach where did it go, I mean even the water looks closer.
Did the restaurants in the inlet get hit again? We use to eat at Down the Hatch. Last time that we were down there, it was still closed for repair from Hurricane Michael.

It wasn't cat 4 when it hit Ponce inlet. It was much weaker at that time.

@@maumor2 yes I know. I was only responding to the comment above calling it a cat 4 regarding Ponce inlet. It was not cat 4 at Ponce inlet. Still did a lot of damage over there though. Ian moved slow and that was bad for everyone everywhere
@@mrsbblanks it might have "just" been a cat 1, *BUT IT LASTED 24 HOURS* as Hurricane Ian stalled over us. We were blasted by winds and rain for 24 hours! Thought I would lose my mind. Winds howled, attic rafters creaked, sewers stopped working, rain water rose for 24 frickin hours. And it left total, devastating flooding in many areas here...and continues to flood inland in Seminole County and Sanford's Lake Monroe 12 days later. They're still underwater.
I lived In Port Orange near Spruce creek High school... I ate at Crabby Joe's on Sunglow Pier 100 Times.. Real sad...
It was my favorite restaurant. I just ate breakfast there two days before Hurricane Ian.
Only the end where people fish broke off. Someone filmed it happening from their condo balcony nextdoor. Fingers crossed that the rest of the pier can be saved.

That's very sad seeing this much destruction. I'm from Long Island, NY. One day I hope to live somewhere in Florida because I love the warm weather. It's a risky move anywhere we live these days. 😭
In NY, I lived through Sandy and a few other hurricanes that actually shut down NYC a few days.
I feel there's a lot more off this on the way. The Hurricane season has just begun.
You are still safe to move to Florida. Been here 34 years. Only 3 hurricanes experience with little or no damage in Tampa Bay. I am still here and plan to stay.
@@olwe1000 Well, to be fair, we get mighty lucky in this general area. (I’m just 35-45 minutes south in Sarasota.) These lands are protected by something.. granted we have a bit of flooding just 35 minutes to our east, hopefully those in Arcadia/Myakka are all good, have friends that can’t get out of their property or homes and have animals to take care of. Much love from your neighbors to the south. 👌

I live in Ocala, FL. 1:45 minutes from Ponce. We barely had rain. We've been spared for many years here. We are inland but able to drive to beaches nearby. Grateful to be here. But I do love Ponce Inlet a lot! As a Realtor, I sell there as well. It's a gorgeous little secret.
Don't move here. This place will be underwater in 10 years. You wont be able to afford the homeowners insurance rates or the Flood insurance rates. Take it from me. I lived in NY (Long Island) for 53 years and moved here. Florida is in denial of strong storms and their weak building codes are proof.
It's sad to see the beach washed away... But my heart aches more for the people on the gulf. Whole neighborhoods look like this beach. Hundreds of people lost ABSOLUTELYEVERYTHING. God help those people.

My husband and I were just there on Sept 20 th, it’s our “Spot”. It will never be the same. Heartbreaking. I probably have some of the last pictures taken of how it was. Hope Hidden Treasure restaurant faired ok?

Some roads are closed in immediate area of hidden treasures due to massive fresh water flooding from 30 inches of rain
As of last night, all Ponce Inlet Restaurants were up and running.

Good Video, the dune destruction is unreal, the power of that churning water in a Hurricane is crazy powerful. I wonder how Canaveral National Seashore in Volusia County looks now.
Been down there and it survived. Found some great shells and not much debris left there like in the last hurricane.
Can you tell if the ocean is back where it was or is it flowing closer to land than before. Just wondering if ocean levels have risen in general.

All from a non land falling cat 1. Think if it was a cat 2 or 3. It's a wake up call for these storms. More energy in a cat 3 then 10,000 nuclear devices. There is major damage up and down our coast. 29 inches of rain in 36 hours in NSB.

Yikes. There at least 3 times a week. What a change. Glad we had dunes. I agree, going through this... It was not a cat1, no way. The wind was fierce.

The water table is rising in Florida and most homes need to be elevated now, not later.

The sand dunes took a beating up our way in North Florida too! The sand dunes did their job though keeping the ocean at bay long enough to save most of the homes behind them!

Hate it happened but it will happen again. Price you pay to live on the beach. Ponce was better without the boardwalks IMO.
A lot of scrap wood everywhere......now might be the time to do that shed build.

If all of that is decimated, makes you wonder what the hell is in the ocean!
The sea takes away then brings it back. It will take some time, but the sand will return.

With the price of lumber at an all time high, I'd be snatching up every every salvageable 2x4 & 4x4 on the beach.
That was already done after my video at toronita beach ramp . Most lumber I'd ever seen .. seen lumber storms before.

Wow! I was wanting to head there to do some fishing. Maybe not. You know the media didn't report any of this that i know of. Even sunglow i didn't hear about. Just goes to show how news from tv sources only want us to see what they want us to see. We are on our own.
We rode it out overlooking nearby Wilbur bay for 40 hrs. straight probably a cat 2 for 3 hrs off Titusville driving home the tidal surge and luckily the tide wasn't optimal from our calculations storm location , fetch , wind speed and our tidal measure area in roadway , peaked after 9pm Thursday , two more cycles if it didn't giddy up off Titusville would've compromised the 2nd tallest lighthouse. on east coast with swirling water around its base , although no danger of it being damaged it would've probably taken the roadway and even 7 to 20 story condos and homes up to Daytona Beach city limits. The northeaster in 1982 for 3 days at 75 mph. did almost the same damage , the dredge project had built those Ponce dunes back up approximately a mile north from the jetty , as the wier ( pressure relief break, to keep base of jetty from undermining ) was FILLED IN to keep the channel from repetitive costly dredging. The jetty base was extended towards the west as the wier was filled as pressure now could sadly happen at the lifeguard tower area . This was a compromise to jetty integrity and channel sand overloads making Ponce inlet the most deadly inlet in the United States before early 80s.

@@karentate9114 back before the wier was filled in it had some reoccurring sand conditions making the water really rough on a ebb tide prompting many articles in local papers , definitely some sharks occasionally , more at the south jetty just harmlessly looking for bait fish , always check with lifeguard or surfers for immediate sharks possibly interacting with shorelines in very shallow water at times .

Exactly! They are called it a tropical storm. BS, it was easily a CAT 1 on the dirty side. Between being a former Long Islander and Floridian, I've experienced tropical storms, CAT1's and CAT2's. CAT2 , no .... I think hurricane Matthew was a CAT 2.
Matthew was cat 3 right offshore and was the worst wind in Volusia County in decades.. more than : in order David 79 , Floyd , 99 Charlie , 04 , Francis , 04 although 124 was recorded in nsb , Irma 17 , in Matthew in Wilbur by the sea we had 2 anemometer readings of a 134 mph. Gust , sending roofs aloof .
@@douglashurd8652 Ok, I thought Matthew was a CAT2 by the time it arrived here. What a harrowing experience that was. I still believe that Ian was a CAT1 on the dirty side.
NSB recorded 96MPH wind at one point during Hurricane Ian. That's no tropical storm.
@@AFAskygoddess yup .. Ian was definitely a cat 2 very briefly off Titusville just ranting and raging with rain , wind and tidal surge across ponce inlet region , I know I felt a 110 gust off wilbur bay twice but was was really , really short in duration , like 2 seconds.
Exactly why, nation wide, there must be a full moratorium on building on all barrier islands and within close proximity of any beach....nature takes what she wants.
Plenty of biodegradable material for beach bond fires. Mother Nature decides where the beach begins and ends, not man.

The water was sucked out of Tampa Bay and probably somehow piled up in the hurricane and came in as a raging tsunami. The bible says men's hearts will fail thinking about the things coming upon the earth. Sannibel Island looks like a nuke hit it except for some of the homes. This storm was a Cat 4 almost a Cat 5. People really need to be watchful of these late season hurricanes like Michael and this one. If they are late in the season, they can be literally monsters.
Tampa is on the gulf. Ponce inlet is on the Atlantic. I highly doubt the water got sucked out of Tampa and brought there.

Same happened in Fort Myers Beach returning the water with an 18ft tsunami storm surge!
That island is now a splintered sand spit!

In a day or so my neighbors house here in Wilbur by the sea , will have some Sanibel residents who lost the roof on their stilt home and washed away the r.v. they should have left in . They in their 70s and just wouldn't leave. They "will leave" if a next time comes hell or high water , I'll definitely hear the story I'm sure . Their journey has just begun.
Don’t listen to the news man. The gfs model was crap and the euro was on point the entire time.. Something fishy in the air. They knew where this storm was going to go but act like they didn’t. You know what’s funny? That massive wave of cold air that came down from Canada.. not many news channels had talked on that during the weather segments and coverage of the storm to come. That cold air helped push it south and they knew it would happen. I only really heard about it from CZcams channels that cover weather far more intensively than even the news does.. don’t trust em guys. Evacuate every time or get your info from multiple sources. No reason for anyone to be complaining about lumber prices. Lots of free lumber all up and down the beach after the last hurricane we drag a trailer up and down peninsula drive that parallels the intercoastal. Literally thousands and thousands of dollars of treated lumber laying next to the road people are throwing away too lazy to denail and reuse. People are truly lazy and pathetic every time there was a storm that rolled through Volusia county I prospered for the last 20 years people are just too lazy to do anything positive in today's world just complain and cry and boohoo like the Democrat. Spent the last 20 years dealing with the storms. News and video always makes it out to be way worse than it actually is FYI I've lived through multiple category 4 storms in 100-year-old house without any problems beachside. Modern day construction and building in floodplain areas is the problem not global warming it's man and their stupid attitude of sticking a house right on the beach. If you can afford to buy a house on the beach you can afford to buy another house when the storm takes it away.
Hurricanes are like mother nature's economic stimulus plan they create lots of work. After living here for more than 20 years I can tell you that the storm just blows most deteriorated stuff away that people are too lazy or pathetic to fix then they try to get insurance claims on it that is why no one can afford insurance why fix your roof when you can wait for a storm to blow it away and get a new one for free on your insurance. Florida the best way to go financially broke through insurance move to Florida and try to live beachside with a house with a mortgage on it. Oh yeah it's a right to work state where you will be paid way below a living wage for any skilled trade you do also don't forget that. Just enjoy that sunshine.
