    Not all of us want to spend hours either working out the best setups for any given car/track combination or trawling forums for advice on setups - we just want to get in the car and trust that we automatically have a competitive vehicle.
    So I would like an in-game engineer as standard, that provides strong setups for each car/circuit perhaps with a few selectable options - i.e. you could choose between high grip or high speed or something inbetween with a single click.
    As technology improves over time, I would ultimately love to see a personal engineer who would be able to analyse your driving and advise you on the best setup in your specific case.

    • @bobmcl2406
      @bobmcl2406 Před 4 lety +1

      Those are great ideas! I have not even dipped my little toe into setups. Like you said, I just want to drive. I have noticed that a lot of the current professional demo sim races are using fixed setups, to equalize things. The result is great racing!

    • @ChrisHaye
      @ChrisHaye  Před 4 lety +11

      With the telemetry data the sims can output, I don't think this is too far fetched at all. The sim has enough data to know when the car is under or oversteering, if it is too low, if the aerodynamics stall, if the daming is sufficient etc. So, really there should be a race engineer function based off of this data. It wouldn't be foolproof, but it would help a lot!

    • @m00ndancer
      @m00ndancer Před 4 lety +1

      There is AI in IRL racing that do that already, like strategy calls. Shouldn't be to hard to make a simpler one in sim racing. Also an AI engineer for the setup would be nice.

    • @Worther12
      @Worther12 Před 4 lety

      Great idea. I would include better telemetry whilst in the pits. An option to overlay different laps you've done against each other to help get up-to speed quicker. This should also include being able to overlay your team mates data. This would help ppl learn how to set a car up (with in depth descriptions of each setting/part & it's effect on the handling).

    • @Brunnen_Gee
      @Brunnen_Gee Před 4 lety

      That's a big one for me. I've only been into sim racing a couple years now, and PC2 was my first specifically because of the engineer it has. I don't have an engineer mind. I'm not interested in it, so holding on to the information to learn and properly set up a car doesn't stick with me (in one ear and out the other). I just want to get in the car and drive, MAYBE tweak a few things for personal preference. I don't want to be given a car that is completely noncompetitive out of the gate and then force me to spend hours, or even days, tinkering with it just to do a race. I like how it's done in PC2. "Hey, the car does so-and-so when I try to so-and-so", and the sim walks you through tweaking it without forcing you to actually learn everything.
      In iRacing I basically only do fixed races because I really don't want to deal with the slog of trying to set up a car myself. It just isn't something I'm interested in.

    I am just 2 years into serious sim racing. And from what I have learned by now, it is the damage model, the gravel and varying technical reliability that need to be adressed. For me personally it is not too much about being competitive but about immersion. Every sim has its own unique feel and in some way I love them all. But being likely to get a puncture for driving through debris or having some minor damage, that causes more damage over time would be cool. It should be optional though.

I want to hear them cheer when doing overtakes and at the start and maybe even add some movement to the crowd. The only racing game doing this right now is F1 2019 I believe. Getting something in return for mastering those challenges would be nice too.
      [And yes, of course a career story mode a la Madden or NBA 2k would be awesome (CM's F1 games are interactive and somewhat non-linear, but they don't tell a compelling and touching story), but outside of Polyphony, Turn 10 and maybe Codemasters, nobody has the experience and resources for that I think, so it's just asked too much]

    Can't agree more with you on all points. I was racing on R3E the other day, 2016 DTM at zandvoort, and experienced my best (and worst) experience in a gravel trap. Had an off and was literally stuck, trying to clutch kick the car in order to gain traction. I think R3E gets gravel physics fairly well and other sims should look at R3E for ideas on that very specific topic.
    And as for damage, this is where the modding community could hit an absolute homerun if they can figure out how to implement it. The modding community seems to be untouchable when it comes to licensing agreements, so one can only hope that they take that advantage and develop better damage models, both visually and mechanically.

  • @mitchell-wallisforce7859
    @mitchell-wallisforce7859 Před 4 lety +9

    Well if we're being weird with our wishlists, then let me give it a shot.
    - Some high-IQ people have already mentioned this, but a story mode would be nice. For me I wouldn't so much ask for a story mode as for a massively fleshed out career mode. Something like you get in Project Cars, where you start in karts and make your way to the top.
    - Another not very interesting idea, but a guy in a simracing stream chat mentioned to me how friggin easy it is to get ahold of the licenses for obscure circuits. Said tracks, like Grobnik in Croatia, Monticello Motor Club in the US, and shockingly enough, Potrero de Los Funes in Argentina, would most likely LOVE to get the extra exposure from having their tracks in games. This also gives us simracers the benefit of broadening our horizons and introduce us to tracks we never knew existed. Lydden Hill shouldn't just be in PCars 2, and GT Sport ought not to have a monopoly on Autopolis.
    - Multiclass. Not enough sims have this. Scratch that, not enough racing games IN GENERAL have this. And not only that, let us have total autonomy over our multiclass shenanigans please. If I wanna race IndyCars against stock cars I don't wanna have to boot up Project Cars 2 all the time.
    - Another thing PC2 does that most others don't - give us the option to set the weather to 'ridiculous'. Currently there is only one game out there that allows for the accurate recreation of the 2016 Nurburgring 24 Hours. Lets change that.
    - I feel like this is pretty obvious, and someone is bound to have mentioned this before, but a robust livery editor would be nice. Yeah, you run the risk of someone putting all the wrong things onto a race car but cmon. When I saw the state of the editor in ACC I pitied its players. And while, again, people can do bad stuff with a robust livery editor, some truly incredible stuff can be created as well.
    - Been scrolling thru the comments and a guy just mentioned a severe lack of competitive drifting. And it got me thinking......what other whole entire motorsports need more representation in sim-land? Ovals get next to no attention outside of iRacing, and dirt ovals quite literally so. And then it came upon me.......Does drag racing legit not have any representation in sims? I've checked, and there is none. This is a cardinal sin. Someone, somewhere, needs to make a drag racing simulator. Immediately.
    - On the topic of motorsport categories, look up Group C.......touring cars. Souped up RX7s, Ford Falcons, Nissan Pulsars with the boost cranked beyond insanity. Yes please.
    - Something silly on the subject of a damage model......what if, in the realm of random mechanical faults, your TEAM made an error of catastrophic proportions? Like, say, not properly attaching a wheel? It would be equal parts infuriating and hilarious if some unlucky bastard in my custom race exited the pits with 3 wheels on his wagon. Speaking of memories......
    - Just in case, cause IDK if all sims have this, but a photo mode would be nice.
    - I have no idea whether this is a good idea or not, but fictional tracks. If it seems like I'm pulling a lot of these ideas from Gran Turismo, I might be, but PCars 2 had the amazing Bannochbrae road circuit and two point-to-points. Wait a minute......
    - Point-to-points can't hurt at all, can they? Would love to see it. Speaking of stuff PCars 2 got very right.....
    - Historic circuits. They will be hard to model as some just straight up dont exist anymore, but if possible, I'd love to see old Le Mans, old Spa, the ancient South Loop from the Nurburgring (not the GP course), and anything else game devs can think of.
    - One more track suggestion - The Isle of Man. Bit of a shot in the dark, but I would love to see that track make it into more games. And not just ones with bikes.
    One final thought.....that gravel trap bit was some of your finest work, Chris. The only disappointment I have is this: If you're gonna put a link in the description AND in chat, then why not make one of those links, y'know, THAT VIDEO? Just to keep the Astley joke train going :)

    Love your suggestions. Gravel traps - or any off track excursion having consequences would be great - even if it was only applied in "official" races - this would require a tow function similar to iRacing.
    I also like the idea of a better damage model, and even reliability issues (much like F1 games where you swap out bits between races or even between practice and race) I think something that needs to come along with damage modelling is realistic time frames for repairs - you only get so many front bumpers for a race weekend, but maybe you can choose to duct tape up some pieces which will fix issues to a point (like a quick repair). I think we also need to avoid the iRacing system where no matter how long you are in pits repairing for you often can't fix top end speed issues. The reliability issues and damage really add to the story aspect when remembering a race you had online. (and also provides an excuse for my slow lap times)
    I think the issue is that a lot of sims on the market have also tried to appeal to the casual gamer - perhaps recognizing that a lot of people are time poor and just want something they can pick up and race with mates.
    Anyway, love your vids, keep up the great work (i really appreciate the editing, and especially the use of the beautiful project cars footage)

    View that does not wobble/shake with the car's body movement.
    In reality our brains compensate for the car's movement and keep the perceived image quite stable. For some reason most sims shake the whole image with the car's body movement.
    I am getting tired/strained eyes, headache and in some sims ( looking at you Automobilista ) even motion sickness off it.

  • @brandonpowellsimracing8005

    The ability to save controls as presets combined with being able to assign said presets on a per-car basis (so that it switches automatically)...this also includes enabling or disabling LEDs and displays on wheels (more for immersion). If I'm driving a Manual gearbox Muscle Car from the 70's, I don't want to see LEDs on my wheel lighting up...same goes for driving a GT3 that already has LEDs on the dashboard. Only Content Manager for Assetto Corsa is the only sim that does all these things thus far (iRacing has it too but not the custom LED option for each car).
    For single player: A career mode with an in game engineer whose quality of suggestions are based on which guy you hired.
    For multiplayer: The best AI engineer possible that gives you an excellent baseline setup and then evaluates your driving and further offers suggestions based on previous runs.

    1. Moddable career. Users can create races, championships and events and have very precise control over everything during a weekend. X car will break on lap z, sc on lap x, random events, chance based events, things that trigger other things to happen. Essentially career apps.
    2. I want a good sim with career mode that is worth playing. Driving for a backmarker team should give you different goals than a front running one and I would not mind to have story driven mechanical damage events for example. I say if you put a career mode into the game either do it well or don't bother at all. It doesn't need to be insanely complex but just make it worthwhile as an experience instead of just pretend a list of races is a career (it isn't).
    3. I want better simulation of faults and quirks of the cars. If a car has really bad clutch or poor ffb then make the car like that and communicate it to the user. The sims in general need to do much better job telling drivers what is going on because we don't have engineers or even manuals for the cars. We literally jump in blind and learn as we go. So add those quirks and make the sim communicate that stuff better so we don't think it is a bug. For example if a car has dogleg h pattern gearbox then make it such and tell us. And please sims provide front runner, mid pack and rear end versions of the same car to add variety even in single car class.
    4. Every sim needs to add the ability to make and use your own skins online. It needs to be a simple drag and drop file system and it is super sad that kind of system is so rare. The sim should also provide templates and a model viewer. A good system would not require the user to edit any text files.
    5. Make the games more open and let the community help the devs. Locking down all the files will just lock down all the issues. The more open the game is the higher the community will elevate the game. It is pathetic how some sims even lock down liveries. Let people change sounds, liveries, make ffb files, apps, shaders and whatever and make it so users can do it without having to manually copy files over original files. I don't mean creating your own physics engine but allow things like physics plugins for example. Of course everybody needs to run the same physics so there is no cheating but there are very knowledgeable people who can add lots of useful stuff if they just could.

    Playing multiple titles at a higher level is much more complicated then one thinks. Most of us have a job a family life which adds to the reduced spare time available for simracing. What I would like to see is a focus on the driver and not the driver/engineer role almost every sim has. I am not there to set up my car for every track. As a driver it isn't my primary job. Giving feedback yes but tuning the whole thing, no thanks. PC2 had a nice thought with it by answering questions to change setups. Would like to see this system being developed upon. What I would like to see is a decent story, more implementation of catching the atmosphere of a raceweekend and mixing up the uncertainties during a raceweekend. Commentary during a racereplay would be great too. I started back in the days with F1'97 and TOCA2. First one had commentary from Murray Walker and the latter from Tiff Needell. In today's games this is almost totally gone. Sure we have commentary by streamers during multiplayer events but the biggest chunk is done offline against AI by players and I find it a shame it is being neglected. More camera varation and customization for replays, an option to place camera's, different onboard cams and an option to record/add commentary on the fly. If a sim is an official licenced series (ACC for example) than it would be great to get a mix of the real life event and sim. During official raceweekends the qualifying can be done directly with the reallife event and qualifying times are directly updated ingame. The race ingame would be setup accordingly during the weekend and closely follow the reallife event. Next to group C I would love to see a true sim on the super touring era (STW/BTCC) or the early Grand Prix days :)

      Totally agree. I actually had something similar down in a first draft of the video, but cut it out to keep things simple. My wish would be a VLN-simulation with 150+ cars in all kinds of classes on the track like in real life. Raceroom did a okayish job with it's 100 cars, but it's just a practice workaround with dumb AI. Cars in your own class should be smart and cars in the slower classes smart enough to go out of the way properly. Cars you don't see should be just dots on the map and not hooking performance. This method would be also nice as a trackday-simulation.

    I'd love to have better weather and ToD options. They need to be quick and easy. When I race in autumn in brazil, how would I know at which time it gets dark there?
    How about a "race events"-LINE graph that starts with "race start" on the left and "race end" on the right and in between it shows important points and areas like "here the sun will set", "here it's getting dark enough that headlights make sense", here are the recommended pitstops, in this area the chance for light rain is above 50%, at that point it will 100% start raining, from this point on the track will be rubbered in equal to medium track performance, here the track will be so wet already that full wets are necessary. And you should be able to change that by entering numbers (like it is currently, but please, minute-accuracy, not by-the-hour)... AND also by directly dragging and click sliders on that race timeline.

    1 thing that really annoys me with most sims is they never get the drivers hands on the wheel correct. Iracing is the only 1 that I have seen do a good job where it looks like the hands are properly holding onto the wheel. AC is the worst as the driver has dislocated wrists to hold the wheel and all the rest of the sims make it look like the hands either aren't holding the wheel or holding it so lightly you wonder how they could apply any turning force. With VR becoming more prominent having good driver hands, and further to that driver animations, helps sell the immersion.

Or getting true stories and challenges. Nascar 06’ got this down near perfectly with real scenarios you had to overcome. Or how about if you complete certain sections of the game, it grants you real-life accolades? I don’t think the mechanics need much addressing anymore. I believe the real issue comes with immersion and you believing you are an actual racecar driver.

    Simulating it in realtime is not possible currently and it would require premade destructed models which would look very boring.
    We need better computation to do that, especially with the massive amount of people complaining about optimization
    Bear in mind that adding different odels of the same car would require obviously to redo the unwraps (texture map) of all the models of every car, and redo the texture patterns of every already made liveries, huge amount of work. As is anything that helps a single player experience ton be better/more immersive. So how about something that acts as a teammate and "drives" at your speed (so as you get better so s/he does too) so you can then leave "RoboMate" [tm] to drive some stints while you "do life", then return to pick up your part.

I have noticed when doing racing at night the tracks official or mods like Croft Circuit are black as dark and headlights are not really enough to race properly...Is there something in sol or csp I am missing that can make the track a bit brighter like say moonlight
    Thanks Heaps for any help

    Why does pCars2 have pretty much full damage on every car but yet ACC doesn't? They have the same cars from the same manufacturers for the most part? Whats stopping them?
    Things like the Kamel GT go stale cause people get tired of driving the same old 2 cars for the last three years. Add more GTP/GrC and GTO cars and watch it boom.
    I think for the most part everything we need in sim racing already exist. The problem is we need them to exist in one title and all titles from here on out.
    The most crucial thing sim racing needs is the auto manufactures paying cold hard cash to have their cars featured in these games/sims.

      I don't know the answer re: PC2, but I've been told by multiple developers that the manufacturers are the sticking point when it comes to damage.

      Yeah, I think that's sort of what I was trying to convey with the "participation across multiple categories" bit.

    You missed out proper rear view mirrors

    • @ChrisHaye

      Jean mentioned that in his video, and didn't want to tread the same ground. I think mirrors could use an overhaul entirely in most sims to be honest.

      @@ChrisHaye in VR for ACC the new new mclaren doesn't even have an in cockpit rear mirror and the side mirrors are rubbish and not at position to allow you to see the car behind. I am just driving blind unless I use the mini map to see if there is a car behind. LFS has the best mirror model by far. ACC should hire the developer from LFS.

    I want the opportunity in ACC to set a range of AI levels, e.g. 90%-95%. This would simulate the difference in speeds that I also get in my (human) league races in stead of the train that I get now in AI races.
