    Thanks so much for the video, unfortunately I don't have a cat, so I had to skip a few steps in your instructions . Despite not having the proper feline tools I was able to disassemble the CD Drive, but found nothing in particular wrong. However reassembly solved my drive not opening issue. So I have to suspect root cause was an alignment issue in the drive (gears, sensor?) because it's working now. YAY! Also wanted to mention that there is a pry point (for a screwdriver on the rear of the control head cover that will release the top cover.
    For all you Bose haters (belly tripper) out there, the root cause component is a Toshiba product. Bought the system in 2002 from the Navy Exchange for use in my BEQ while stationed at Amphib Base Little Creek (Go Navy, beat Army). It's lasted 14 1/2 years so far; I'd say it's a pretty durable product. My Daughter says she's going to take it to college.

    Extremely helpful video and enjoyed your kitty! My ca. 2004 Bose 321 CD/DVD drawer suddenly stopped ejecting and the motor would run on startup/reset with no joy. It turned out that the gear had popped off the drive motor shaft. A little super glue, some minor adjustments, and all is well!

      What usually causes these gears to crack is the user NOT using the open close button to close the disk tray. It is easier to just shove the tray until it goes in. This puts stress on the plastic gears, and we know what happens to plastic under stress.

    The drive reminds me of early Blu-ray and HD DVD players, standard IDE drives inside. Had proprietary software though, can't just swap them into a PC.

    I also had a cracked motor gear. Fortunately once I took the DVD drive front cover off and forced opened the drawer I could see and access the gear, I didn’t remove any panels. Krazy glue did the trick! The only issue was the drawer didn’t want to close after the repair. I used a screwdriver to push the tray off the gears and allowed it to cycle. Then still using the screwdriver lifted the drawer all the way in. Worked for me but at least I knew what to do if that didn’t work thanks to the video.

    Nice repair job. I must agree Bose make very good electronic gear. Its a shame this unit is let down by a crap Toshiba drive. Still you fixed the bay door drive motor and kept the unit out of land fill for a little while longer. Oh yeah that is a one beautiful cat you have there.

    Thank you I would have never been able to fix mine with out it. Found cracked gear as well. My thoughts would be the gear is presses on with slight tension to not slip. Plastic as it ages has a tendency to shrinks slightly and and become more brittle... shrink on a steel shaft ....no where to go so it cracks.

    I watched this video over a year ago and I extracted the dvd player from the housing and I could not get the tray to open then, and I'm trying now and I still can't get the tray to open. I tried to follow what you did at the 7:35 mark and I still can't get the tray to eject. Plus that ribbon cable below your left hand at the same 7:35 mark detached from that upper part. Is that a problem or is it an easy fix?

    can you elaborate on the switch needing to be adjusted to neutral, did repair as you outlined(thank you) when press eject the tray came out then directly back in. did this a few times then came out to be loaded and stayed open. the eject button would not close it and it didn't want to be physically pushed into closed position. mine is sd-m1612, mfg'd june 2002. has a bit different switch, but i can not tell how you are adjusting it around the 9:55 to 10:20. any help is appreciated.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Před 8 lety +2

      +shane morris The switch is a lever type that is pressed by the loading gear. In the fully ejected position it is held to one side, and in the fully loader position it is held the other way. In between these extremes is the neutral position, where the switch would sit at rest in the middle. It is spring loaded to naturally return to the center position. When you install the switch make sure the cam gear is not at the extreme position. If your tray timing is off, the switch will never activate in either the fully open or closed position.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Před 8 lety +1

      +Koffi Banan
      The gear has a Crack an therefore one of the teeth th spacing is a little wider between these teeth an it makes a noise every rotation of the gear. The reason it wasn't opening was because the motor shaft was slipping in the gear as with the Crack it is now loose. I didn't have a replacement gear. I tried a different ide DVD rom drive. They work in my old apex dvd player that used a generic drive, but not on bose. Bose checks the drive firmware and it won't even turn on with a different drive installed. They want you to buy a replacement drive from them, or more likely send the unit to their repair facility. This fix should hold. The glue will prevent the gear from slipping and should keep the gear from totally breaking. For years and years this was done at the shop I worked at to patch up low torque gears that were unavailable an they held out for a long time. Sometimes you got to do what you can to keep these old units working. There was a lot cut from this vid. I did try to replace the drive but it didn't turn on so I dropped it as that would have been the best possible repair, slap in a new drive. I'll do one on the apex as it needs a new drive and now I have one to put in it.

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Před 8 lety

      +Koffi Banan The racket the drive makes is the gears meshing. Sure they could have used a belt drive and it would have been silent, but a gear drive is more reliable. That is until a plastic gear breaks.

    • @koffibanan3099
      @koffibanan3099 Před 8 lety

      Oh, don't get me wrong, i think it's a great fix! Was just wondering if they were this noisy from the factory. Thanks again for taking the time to do these videos, I enjoy them a lot and learn a great deal!
      Greetings from Belgium!

    • @12voltvids
      @12voltvids  Před 8 lety +2

      +Koffi Banan Perhaps not quite as loud as it is now, but yes you definitely hear the drive opening. It is nothing more than a PC DVD rom drive. Now some of them (the quiet ones) use a belt drive, but all the ones that use a direct gear driven drive the gears do get a little loud as they star to wear a bit. The advantage to gears is they shouldn't break, but I believe these cracks are caused by the user not using the open/close button to close the drawer, but rather shove it in, and that puts much more stress on the plastic parts than they would normally encounter bring driven by the loading motor.

      +Alan Henes I didn't bother pricing the drive out. There is a good chance that it is NLA from bose now due to the age of the unit. What I can confirm is that the 321 system checks for a specific firmware on the drive, and it will not power up with any other DVD drive connected. Liteon did the same thing with their stand alone recorder. I tried replacing the lite-on burner with another lite on drive, the same model number but a later firmware and the recorder refused to recognize it.

Will sit for hours watching my fish.I never used to be a bose fan my self. Untill I bought a new car with a bose system installed, and then started to appreciate the quality of the sound.After seeing the construction quality of the units though, I can say that they are built about as solid as anything I have seen, and as the saying goes you get what you pay for. Yes they are expensive, but then the wages paid to the American workers that make them is also much higher than say at some sweat shop in some 3rd world country. I do understand why they put in a foreign drive though, as I doubt that there are any domestic dvd rom manufactures.
