XR6 ZF 6 speed shift problems

- This video shows the symptoms of uneven front wheel diameter. Despite the fact the tyre size, wheels and pressures are the same, the ZF has a low tolerance to any difference in wear/mismatched brands at high speed (100kmph+). The gearbox thinks the car is constantly turning a corner and holds gears.
Wow that's amazing stuff - great diagnostics!
Thanks mate solved my problem
Had exactly this problem in my Ford Territory. Started immediately after a wheel alignment and rotation (2 different tyres on front). Rotated the tryes again so the two front tyres matched and the problem went away. Thanks for the advice.
Hi mate mine does the same thing all matching rubber size ect still does it what else can it be it's got me stuffed
i had that issue just unplugged the battery left it off for 30 mins and its fine again
Had the exact same issue on my BF XR6 Turbo.. I now have a 2008 silhouette BF mkII XR8 with only 54,000km on the clock... I absolutely love these cars 😍 ... although I've had an FG XR8 milkshake on me and torque convert / mild shifting issues with my XR6 Turbo... I hope i have much better luck with my current beast, touch wood
How's the Turbo compared to the XR8 considering that they are both the BF?
check the fluid in box as Ive heard that on the four speed the raditior rots on inside causing coolant to mix with trans fluid and kill autobox maybe this has happened with your six speed as it uses the same rad as four speed.
But this is a six speed not a 4 speed ?
This explanation is the closest solution to my issue. SY TS Territory (AWD) with 6 speed Sequential Auto. As I drove away from a local tyre place to fit one mismatched tyre on the left front. I noticed in [D] it wouldn't change back up 3>4>5>6 after kick down, but only above 80-85 Km/h! under that speed the operation was normal. But, no shift up problems when in CRUISE, which I haven't quite worked out. Gotta be an EEC / PCM issue in the input logic settings by a sensor or input parameter!? What is different between EEC logic in Cruise Control Vs using your foot on the pedal? A work around so far has been to have the CRUISE in standby (not set or set) and the problem goes away, normal shifting up and down at all speeds?!?!
As this happened on the very day I had the tyre replaced, I'd like to know what sensor is to blame for the transmission to fail to change back up whilst using throttle pedal. I knew the tyre guys didn't break anything, so I wasn't blaming them, I just haven't been back to ask them what it might be...I have to say this is a better scenario than a stuffed mechatronic box.
Wheel speed is taken from the ABS sensor on the wheels. I highly doubt you have a faulty sensor as any abnormal signals will result error codes/ABS lights on the cluster. The fact that this occured straight after seeing the tyre shop suggests there is a mistake match of tyre size, tyre age (wear) or wheel. As mentioned in the video, same size tyres of different brands is enough to throw things out. The ZF 6 speed gearbox has 52 (from memory) different shift tables (modes) behind the scenes to adapt the various condtions (sport, seq, cruise, kick down, heavy braking, cornering ... Etc). When the computer receives inaccurate wheel speed information (mismatch in rolling diameter), the computer can incorrectly select shift modes and cause weird behaviour. Basically, if the don't have any ABS/engine lights, go back to the tyre guy as something isn't right.
@@timwds89 Thanks Tim, Yeah, no error codes or warning lights at all, OBDII doesn't show anything, they put one cheap tyre on before XMAS to get me running, it's gotta be that. Glad I read the comments here, I've been searching any kind of answer for weeks! cheers.
@@stephenallen3268 hi i have the exact same issue with my awd sy 6speed just wondering if you found the solution ?
I have a 6speed awd ford territory which does the exact same thing what should I do mechanically
NGU change the fluids
That's what happens in my fg
What do the front wheels have to do with this??? The gearbox is not connected to the front wheels, unless you are front wheel drive or 4WD or AWD.
The gearbox is not connected to the front wheels mechanically, however it is very much connected electronically. The TCM (gearbox computer) monitors the wheel speed using the ABS sensors in order to determine the most suitable behaviour. In this case, odd wheel size makes the gearbox think the vehicle is making a constant turn and limits gear changes to maximise comfort and avoid potentially breaking traction.
@@timwds89 is this harming my vehicle?
fuck mine does this too sometimes! always have to do it manually
Based on the amount of KM i would say the internal trans cooler in the radiator has let go and the coolant is mixing with the trans fluid, so get the auto serviced and replace the radiator/coolant and put a external trans cooler only, bypass the radiators internal trans cooler that way if anything does go wrong with the radiator your not going to hurt the transmission at all ?ae
No, definitely cause by tyre size. This box is still going strong 5 years later.
The bf falcons have the transcooler separate to the radiator coolant tubes. Ford did this due to having problems with the BA. If you are worried about this simply replace the radiator every 100.000 km and you won't have the issue.
Only dont 86k? Fuck all
maybe the camshaft position sensor is being deflected by the intermittent wiper function... sorta matches the above diagnostic relevance
I ran staggered wheels and it destroyed my BF zf wish I found this video 1 year ago lol
atleast thats a cheap fix!! haha
