Excellent detailed explanation. Your advice on pulling out the small "vent tube" below the bracket holding in the filter is very key! (Unfortunately I had just followed another video that didn't mention this. My neighbors surely heard many foul words being exclaimed from inside my X5.)

Hi and thank you for sharing! I just replaced my filter on my 2013 X5 E70 following your video. It took about 10 minutes.
It was only 5 of T20 screws total and as you showed, I did not have to remove the lower duct entirely to get the filter bracket off. The original filter was probably never been changed (car has 59k miles now) and was as dirty as yours. Few months ago I had changed the 2 cabin activated carbon filters, that are placed inside the engine bay. Now after changing this filter there is a slightly better airflow at low fan speed. On a different note, especially in European and Asian cities where they have a lot of diesel vehicles, these 3 filters should be changed every year, they are affordable and help to protect your health.

Wow, I didn’t even know that filter existed there. I don’t even know if the dealer ever changed those. I better take a look and replace them if necessary. Thank you so much and nice DIY.

Just wanted to say I appreciated the video posting of on where this filter is located and how to replace it. Your audio and explaination on what to do was outstanding. I'm the 2nd owner of a 09 E70 X5 and I know without a doubt it hadn't been changed because of odor. Riding fresh now. Thanks.

Immense thank you for this simple video that saved me $400 dealer quote on this!! Everything on my AC was working fine but the flow was restricted. Very glad to find this video. I took out the filter easily and it was BLACK with debris!

Thanks for the video. You saved me some cash by showing me how to do this myself. Thanks!

Looks like you installed it differently than when you removed it. Your removal shows the air flow label coming out first which means the air flow direction is towards the passenger direction. That's also how my F86 was. You installed it inserting the filter with air flow label on top meaning air flow direction towards the driver direction.

Huh wow. When I was looking at cabin filters I saw these for sale and assumed they were for differently specd x5s, I just replaced the 2 cabin filter under the hood on the passenger side.

Huan Pham punch in the part# and you can get it from a number of sources online such as ECS, Amazon, eBay, etc. I prefer genuine BMW as it’s still cheap at $25
