- Jon Stewart's appearance on the CNN show "Crossfire" in 2004 had a significant impact on the political discussion, and opinions on its effect are subjective. In general, Stewart's criticism of the show and the state of political discourse was well-received by many, but the assessment of whether it had a positive or negative impact depends on one's perspective.
During his appearance on "Crossfire," Jon Stewart, who was the host of "The Daily Show" at the time, expressed his concern about the show's style of political commentary. He argued that shows like "Crossfire" contributed to the polarization of political discourse, emphasizing entertainment over substantive discussion.
Stewart's key points included:
Critique of Partisan Bickering:
Stewart criticized "Crossfire" for engaging in what he saw as shallow and confrontational partisan bickering rather than fostering a genuine exchange of ideas.
Dismissal of Responsibility:
He accused the media, including shows like "Crossfire," of failing in its responsibility to provide a meaningful platform for political discussion and debate.
Advocacy for Responsible Journalism:
Stewart advocated for a more serious and responsible approach to journalism, urging media outlets to contribute to informed public discourse.
The aftermath of Stewart's appearance led to some significant consequences:
Cancellation of Crossfire:
The show faced increasing criticism, and in 2005, CNN eventually decided to cancel "Crossfire." While the cancellation was not solely due to Stewart's critique, his comments contributed to the ongoing debate about the role of media in political discourse.
Impact on Media Critique:
Stewart's appearance had a lasting impact on discussions about media responsibility, journalistic integrity, and the influence of entertainment in news programming.
From the perspective of those who shared Jon Stewart's concerns about the state of political discourse on television, his appearance on "Crossfire" was seen as a positive and necessary critique. However, others who appreciated the confrontational style of shows like "Crossfire" may have viewed it less favorably. Ultimately, the incident prompted reflection on the role of media in shaping political conversations and had repercussions in terms of media programming decisions.
This episode is what got the show canceled. They thought Jon Stewart was right and canceled it 3 months later.
Fired from CNN. Fired from MSNBC. Fired from Fox News. Tucker Carlson holds the record as the only on-air personality to be fired from three major news networks.
Tucker had already put in his notice.
Tucker was not renewed, he claims he left for MSNBC though
Nah, CNN was just embarrassed so hard they cancelled the show.
Before Jon Stewart came on, this was considered the highest rated "new program" on tv. After, they got canceled 3 months later. I loved that Jon came on with a mission and read both of them.
I can't believe 20 years have gone by since this classis episode. It's perfect for perspective after Carlson's recent interview with Putin and Stewart's return to the Daily Show.
Stewart talked about the interview in his latest episode!
Also his line about the bush administration being hard to top in absurdity in light of trumps presidency
It's all come full circle
Can't upvote this enough! I have been saying the same thing in many comment sections over the last few years after Tucker openly admitted he made mistakes reporting on the Iraq war. I have gained a lot of respect for Tucker Carlson after he turned that leaf and his push for the truth, and will continue to support anyone that is objectively looking to report the news. Tucker & John's personal growth over the last 2 decades make revisiting an interview with John Stewart a valuable discussion that the world would benefit from hearing. Two sides having an honest discussion in person for everyone to see, even if they do not see eye to eye on everything, is the appropriate way to have a healthy dialog in a civilized society. I really hope to see them do a follow up interview together to discuss the current events.
@@amirhabibi9121The only "personal growth" Tucker has undergone is becoming more open about his fascistic world view.
Tucker knew he was eviscerated when he said "I thought you'd be funny" and Jon said "I'm not your monkey!." Brutal take-down by Stewart!!
Even without the punchline by Stewart, Carlson saying that after 8 minutes of non-stop humor already says everything!
I think the only thing he says that beats this is when Tucker says “you need to get a job at a journalism school” and he immediately fires back with “you need to go to one”
Crossfire should have been called “two grown ass men talking over one another.”
They tried something interesting by bringing in a studio audience - in those days one hoped it was a way to force open the insularity that had developed by that point - it ended up doing the opposite - it turned into theater where the two sides competed for applause
Jesus, Tucker is insufferable... I don't even care for John Stewart that much, but he was making real and good points and Tucker just wouldn't listen.
Also, notice how many times Stewart gets an applause or a laugh vs. Carlson. It's a complete blowout. Carlson tries DESPERATELY to reclaim the audience.
@@stephenschaffenberger6765Stewart completely took over the show. You can just feel the humiliation oozing out of Tucker.
@@DirtFlyer You could see it in Tucker's micro-expressions just how spikey and defensive he was becoming, he just never had the wit to follow up.
@@stephenschaffenberger6765maybe because it’s a CNN audience 🤔
@@RealMadrid15UCLs Yeah, it couldn't have anything to do with Stewart being a professional comedian and well-liked by the public. The audience are just haters of Tucker. That's also why they all showed up to a live showing of this garbage show. Grow up child.
A piece of history right there.
💯
Holy cow! This is a hidden gem! The whole episode including Stewart demolishing them (in stellar quality, too!) Thanks a lot!
My pleasure!
@beelysalasblairlike Jon said, great entertainment but it wasn’t news. He was able to kill this program but the obsession with political theater eventually resulted in a celebrity as our president
@natethegreat1999 So it wasn't politicians' fidelity to incremental change/dismantling and active hostility towards the working middle class that made voters vote for a goofball rather than continue the status quo but rather a comedian who does better journalism than any reputable news org? Howwwww
@@danjbabdude where did you get such a clean copy of this airing?? It looks incredible!
I’ve had this recording since in 2004 but I never posted it due to the poor quality 320 * 240 (4:3) format. Recently it became possible to bring this up to 3840 * 2160 (16:9).
I used Topaz Labs Video AI for the upscale and cleaned up the audio in Pro Tools. I then took it into Premiere Pro, added the side blur and replaced the news crawl ticker at the bottom with a more pleasing subtle glow crawl. I edited and color corrected it, then exported it using Media Encoder. All processing done on a M1 Mac Studio Ultra.@@HoraceInkling
Tucker did stop wearing bow ties.
I always bring that up when Tucker fanboys praise him for his journalism. They usually don't get the reference so I gotta show them.
I like to imagine that after this show happened Tucker stormed off to his dressing room, stomping his feet and shouting at anyone he crossed paths with, probably flipped some tables, slammed his door, started drinking hard liquor, trashing the room, then glanced at his pristine collection of bowties and decided to stuff all his bowties into the paper shredder.
After watching this clip I am surprised anybody values his opinion.
“It’d be hard to top this group.” Oh, sweet, summer child…
:How are you holding up" is literally more hard hitting than anything tucker asked Putin
But it’s not…lol, why lie about it? Jon wants to be taken seriously but when confronted…”I’m just a comedian”. I’m glad Tucker didn’t put up with it.
False. Clearly you didnt watch the interview. Good little sheep
@@joshwatson5561 Theres no way you came here to defend Tucker 🤣🤣🤣 GOD thats pathetic.
@@joshwatson5561LOL Tucker lost his show and was such a pariah he could only get work at Faux News. Yeah, what an absolute Chad. Do yourself a favour, don't vote this election cycle.
@@wtice4632 even Putin thought so! 😄
“And you won’t” is such a savage response to “I’d hate to have dinner with you!”. God I love Jon Stewart.
20 years later, and I still agree with John Stewart in this clip.
"I know, and you won't"
I would love to see Stewart and Tucker go at it again now in 2024
Good god I haven’t seen the opening minutes, it really is pro wrestling
You got to admit it sure is fun to watch
It was and is horrible to watch.
Yeah, it was brutal. I have been a political junkie for decades, however, I could not stomach this show.
It does show how things have changed, and perhaps not for the better. The bombast and incessant noise of these TV channels may have dissipated a little, but the wrong lesson was learned. It seems CNN (and other networks) decided that a debate format was “bad”, when in fact the real lesson was missed, i.e. bad debate is bad, and we miss good debate. In the end, Jon Stewart was crucial to Crossfire’s cancellation, but real, honest debate also disappeared, replaced by a sanitised, non-confrontational and extremely silo heavy approach. The (two) sides of American politics hardly ever talk to each other. This media situation may even have contributed to partisan nature of politics, where Democrats and Republicans speak different languages and live in diametrically opposed realities. Crossfire was bad, but it was one of the only debate shows going.
Crossfire was bad even if it was one of the only self-proclaimed debate shows going.
This is the moment Tucker Carlson officially became Cucker Tarlson.
Humiliated even out of his defining sartorial feature, his bow-tie and the shame it reminded him of.
😂😂😂😂😂😂
Spin alley. Don't forget.
"It'd be hard to top this group (to mock)"
Oh John, how little did you know :(
Thanks for the reupload - AI upscale and all
Thank you for your feedback much appreciated!
This looks incredible 😮
Tucker Carlson is even more insufferable now than he was 20 years ago. Fantastic achival piece. Thanks for uploading
My pleasure!
Tucker asking him why he didn't ask John Kerry tougher questions, and then thinking of his Putin interview and his justification is hilarious
Jon predicted the future here and his criticism is 1000 percent valid in saying this show was reductive and wasn't substantive enough to justify calling it a debate show.
Jon Stewart as an actual news man would be brutal and amazing.
Jon Stewart as an actual news man is brutal and amazing.
I’m so embarrassed I voted
For Bush. Totally got played. And I’m seeing this happen to other young voters today…😢
Tucker lecturing John about not asking hard-hitting questions is hilarious! 😂
This is one of the biggest shellackings I’ve ever seen. I know after this show they were both pissed and questioning their lives (which maybe is why it was cancelled shortly after)
Would have loved to see the clips between the break and after. Never before have I seen the video in full but its fascinating. The only bad thing you could remotely say about Stewart here is just that he is being discourteous, and yet they had pre-prepared graphics on screen attacking Stewart for how he handles his show. They invited him on to give him a hard time and he came out swinging and got them cancelled. What a reversal.
This is a good episode to revisit after last night's Daily Show.
Here after Lex interviewed Tucker button
Did he say, "left vs white"?
Was this filmed yesterday??
TC being on CNN in 2024, couldn’t imagine
How did you get the show in such high resolution?
Thank you for your feedback!
I wanted to post this way back in 2004. Unfortunately, all I had was a 320 * 240 low-quality video capture. Practically unwatchable on current displays. However, with recent advancements in hardware and software it became possible to upscale it to a decent quality.
I used Topaz Labs Video AI for the upscale and Avid Pro Tools to clean up the audio. I edited it in Premiere Pro, applied color correction, added the side blur, and replaced the news crawl ticker at the bottom with a more pleasing subtle glow crawl. The export was finalized in Media Encoder. All processing was done on a M1 Mac Studio Ultra.
12:21 Has aged like a fine wine.😂😂😂
I'd like to mention that Tucker accidentally says "owing in fart" and then corrects himself .. "part".
😂😂😂
@6:08
You time stamped that with comical timing 😂
Tucker Carlson's supervillain origin story.
fact.
This quality is really nice
Back when Jon was the most dangerous man on television destroyed hack’s careers for breakfast. Crossfire canceled days after this interview… Mad Money got his rep destroyed by Stewart on the Daily Show, show canceled. The guy is a force of nature.
Crossfire didn’t end until a year after, and mad money is still going
Crazy that this literally still applies today in 2024….
19:17 "it'd be hard to top this group."
we had no idea what was ahead of us a decade later...
Repugs were continually on a regressive track after 2004. Their crashing of the economy in 2008, the unleashing of Sarah Palin, the Tea Party, then the Freedom Caucus. All of this pointed to their eventual demise in to being the MAGAt party they are right now.
Thank you!
You're welcome!
"You have a responsabilité to the public discourse. And you fail, miserably"
I don’t think I’ve ever seen Tucker so pressed before holy crap
Can someone please explain to me why there's a random bell sound at 20:17 ? What's the significance? I feel like I missed something.
It's the show's standard format cue that the timer has run out, that segment went beyond the usual format though and just became a discussion so the bell sound wasn't followed or relevant
End of the rapid fire round (which Jon was ignoring anyway)
Damn, how prophetic John Stewart was, how right he was. If only the news shows had listened maybe things wouldn't be so polarized now. Too bad it was only crossfire that was killed shortly after this airing...
News networks figured out that providing entertainment 24/7 was much more profitable in the short term than infotainment. However, just like CNN has found out, if you go down that road and don't acquire a huge following like Fox News then you lose all credibility with the audience that used to watch you.
I was thinking a bit where I first heard of Tucker Carlson during the last few days (after the Putin interview) and yeah of course from the video where he got fucked over by Stewart.
He had already put in his notice to leave and crossfire was going to cancel soon Tucker told Lex Friedman today in his interview
Dude the quality is crazy on this , how did you do this?
Thanks so much for the comment!
I took the poor quality 320 * 240 (4:3) recording done in 2004 and upscaled it to 3840 * 2160 (16:9) using Topaz Labs Video AI. The audio was cleaned up in Pro Tools, and the color correction and editing was done using Premiere Pro and Media Encoder. All processing done on a M1 Mac Studio Ultra.
@@danjbab you're a legend, great work!
I second this, fantastic work and thank-you for your better important media preservation 👍
@@danjbab Thanks. It's really good, but there's some funny stuff with it. Some stuff is just too detailed that it looks weird like the hair and fingers.
@@danjbabwow this is amazing! I can only imagine what other restorations people can do with these tools. It’s advancing so quickly!
Tucker grilling Jon about soft ball questions on this show is what was gnawing on him in the back of his mind as he got his baggage out of the airport in Moscow and asked himself, "What if this Putin interview is a mistake?"
What did you use to upscale this? Looks amazing.
I’m glad you’re enjoying it!
This upscale was done using Topaz Labs Video AI on the source, the audio was cleaned up in Pro Tools, and the color correction and editing was done using Premiere Pro and Media Encoder. All processing done on a M1 Mac Studio Ultra.
Also, as I mentioned in another reply, it is very tricky to get a natural looking upscale with minimal artifacts. Especially when you’re dealing with a poor 20 yr old old DVR capture as the source. Because of the current state of the available software, not everyone will be happy with the results!
@@danjbabYou can see some artifacts but I thought I was looking at a Betacam NTSC master for a while. Awesome.
@@danjbabOut of curiosity, what was the exact resolution of that original DVR capture?
Some artifacts? I though it was completely IA generated for awhile
The specs on the original video capture: 614 kb/s 320 * 240 (4:3), at 29:970 FPS, AVC (Constrained Baseline@L1.3) (2 Ref Frames)@@HOTD108_
Jon's only mistake is thinking it would be hard to top the bush administrations absurdity.
you know it's actually weird watching 2000s clips in actual oringal quality.
Like, you know how some kids would watch old black and white moives and think the world just lacked colour then? I like to imainge there being a point where kids think the 2000s was just 240p.
This is where Jon Stewart created the villian TC is today. Great stuff.
The length of time it took for this crowd of clapping seals to realize this was a serious conversation was embarrassing.
They're hurting us a helluva lot more today.
22 mins == "a full half hour"
CZcams ads are annoying but 8 minutes is a looooong time
you just described a standard 30 minute television time slot, which is exactly what this program was.
You must be young lol this is adorable
Wow. Jon for President. That is all.
"You sniffed John Kerry's throne..."
What did Carlson just do for Putin?
Interview him? Or is that not allowed. Didn't realise the US was at war with Russia.
@@wardy940 I don't know man, interviewing a war criminal who's proud of being a war criminal.. 🤷
Absolutely classic
Thanks for the awesome quality of this upload. Even before Stewart’s segment, it’s easy to see why this show was cancelled; it’s an absolutely awful format, frenetic, shrill, and completely unconvincing.
Debates are already more about performance than truth; this trading of blows can’t even live up to the former.
Thanks! Given the state of the currently available software, it’s tricky to get the balance between unwanted artifacts and going for the highest quality when an upscale is done on a DVR capture from 2004.
I’m glad this video memorized Carlson accidentally saying “owing in fart”
Genuine question how is the quality so fucking great?
My favorite moment is when Jon calls Tucker out for going to spin alley.
if this show came back it should be about debating policies, and issues. not just the political riff of the week.
It sounds good on paper, but eventually your going to have to talk about current events
@@TimmyTheTinmanno, ‘your’ not.
They are called ideas.
If Jon only knew A: the era that would follow this one and B: the people Tucker would go onto interview after this… I feel his pleas would have been all the more direct.
When Jon Stewart OWNED nerd bow-tied Tucker Carlson!!!!!
Tucker said fart instead of part, and didnt laugh? He must be a robot
6:08
Close! He's just conservative. I can see why you're confused.
Good to see that 20 years later, Jon Stewart still knows how to tear Tucker Carlson a new one.
7:40 (Jon Stewart's intro)
8:48 (It begins)
14:18 (the moment)
Carlson said, "Oweing in fart" lmao
Tucker’s bow tie says it all
19:10 2016 was like, *hol my beer*
Jon "Please stop"
Tucker "Niet"
"I thought that went great!"
😂
Tucker constantly tries to interrupt and talk over Jon, much like his orange messiah.
We were all watching the Tucker Carlson villain origin story unfold before our eyes
Yep, it was the point where Jimmy McGill became Saul Goodman.
@17:41 hits hard after the last couple of years
It's as if we're living in the Matrix and someone in Morpheus's crew were trying to drop subtle hints to us about what's to come.
Jon Stewart embarrassed CNN so hard they cancelled this show XD
I think this is when he became supervillain Vector from Despicable Me.
0:59 Wow - so ‘fake news’ was a term well before Trump then?
Genuinely didn’t hear it used so much until he came onto the scene
Not the same thing - they meant onion like stuff - not propaganda
Yeah it was parody/satire, literally fake. Not the way they use it today
Tucker at 12:10 is so ironic given how he would "interview" Putin 20 years later.
This was brutal
He got this show CANCELLED for REAL lmao
owing in fart “6:07”
👏🏼👏🏼 I caught that, it was awesome 😂
Tucker Carlson is a baby faced here lol. I was in college 2004, this brings back good memories. Jon Stewart is the GOAT 🐐. Tucker is an icon with bad takes ; )
6:08 LMFAO
At the end, where Jon is asked why it's hard to get straight answers out of politicians, I really do think his show, The Problem, really managed to find an answer to that.
What was that answer?
The interview that got crossfire canceled
11:26 called them hacks on their face.
I can’t believe Tucker had Putin on and treated him better than his own president.
Treat people how you want to be treated.
To Tucker who's definitely never watched this...Hi Tuck!
20 years later and Jon Stewart has again called Tucker a dick on national tv (during his most recent TDS segment). Things really do come full circle!
The idea of a crossfire show is not a bad one. I want to watch two experts from the liberal and conservative side debate one another on the issues. Then I can decide with whom I agree. The problem with this show, as Stewart articulated, is they were disingenuous. They have something similar to Crossfire in the munk debates podcast.
Shoutout Crank Yankers
20:50
By then Jon was unloading his remaining bullets in the Crossfire fish barrel.
Good to see Tucker could never get an idea through his skull.
21:39 Jfc I never thought I would miss these kinds of nonsensical questions. Simpler times. 😢
tuckers ego never recovered from this, stewarts offense is great to watch
