- If you are thinking of pursuing a career as a web designer or web developer then this video is for you. It can be hard to know where to start and which road is the right one for you to travel down. Although there are some inherent similarities between the two roles they are very different in nature. One is focused on aesthetics and usability, the other is focused on code and functionality.

As soon as you said “you can do both. You can switch easily because they are so closely related to each either” I was like, I like you. I like that thinking!!! Thanks, it was a great video!
Thanks so much, Haruna!!!
It’s like the relationship between architect and the engineer
The architect designs the building
The engineer works out if it stands
exactly
I think a web design is more like an interior designer because it focuses on the feel the mood and the utility.
This is the more accurate comparison.
Your RC car analogy was spot on for me. Couldn’t put them back together though.
Right?!?
Long story short: do both!
Because every job offer requests designers to code...............and developers to know design
:)
true :)
if you want to learn both, which one should you start with?
@@meggiekwere1831 design...because design comea first in development then code for the final blow
thats what I thought and doing currently
waldo mack why can’t you be a master at both?
Thank you for taking the time to delve into these two paths. Trying to figure out where I fit between design and development, and your thoughts were very helpful!
I absolutely appreciate you for making this video! Your analogies and examples really helped me grasp the concepts more strongly. Awesome job. Thanks man.
Where are you from.??
Want to know a secret?
You can be both and be damn good at it.
Not so much of a secret 🤣
Its a secret how you actually become good at it, since it takes years sadly to get a job as a developer lol
@@cautarepvp2079 it is easier to get job as a designer than a developer, very true. however, developers are more needed in team as there are 1-2 designer vs 10 developers. plus the higher salary cap. and good developers not only just know how to codes well but communicate well i.e. social skills and taste for aesthetics. just as good designers aren't afraid of logic analysis and reasoning i.e. programming or deep user research and not the pretty pixels people. as a developer, you can learn design very easily but as a designer you tend to afraid of coding since its harder.
@Ibe7 Edeh web design is a dead field that is if you want to raise a family get 401k and have decent salary income.
@Ibe7 Edeh how is it scary?
I'm considering either option and this was super informative!
I feel like your analogy for a developer being "If you're the person who likes to do puzzles face-down" as it seems to get the core of the profession -- you may not have many of the clues as to how to get an app/website up and running, but that's okay because that's exactly your job to figure out.
Thanks for the feedback
والله بقالي ساعه بدور في المحتوى العربي ومفهمت شئ وانت اللي افدتني
Thank's❤
Thanks for answering my question on the two subjects. I'm at the point where I wanna work in the web and deciding between the two but wasn't sure what to do. Was confused. You did a great job on clearing things up for me. Now I know. Thank you! (Development) ☺️
Glad it helped 👍🏼
OH MY GOSH the car analogy was exactly what I needed to get it. Thanks!
Jesse, thank you for this video. I really needed it. I majored in industrial design graduated from Wentworth Institute of Technology in 2018 - I quickly learned how much the field is not environmental friendly so I decided to change to print / digital design. Since then I started my own small business MORE Creative LLC, to focus on the web design and I’ve recently learned the developer side of HTML and css , JavaScript soon. But now I feel like I found a balance with the work I like to do.
I've been learning Web Development for the past year, while also teaching art to high schoolers. I think I'm ready to make the switch to web design. The design aspect comes easily to me, I just need to master the tools.
awwwwwe
How’s it going now?
Thank you so much for this video, ever since I was in middle school I wanted to do graphic design. I love making digital art, logos, and simplistic things that also make you think. I’ve recently taken a web design class in high school, and I thought why not do both. I looked into it and I didn’t think I wanted to divest deep as web development. But all the other sources I looked at made it seem it was required. I know the basics pretty well, enough to get me through, but I really like focusing on the aesthetics. So thank you so much! This was so helpful! I’m going to pursue web design :)
I love your write up
I wanna become fully web developer
I'm interested in making a website accessible friendly, a comfortable UI for a large variety audience and have a color scheme to follow along with it. I only dabbled in HTML5 and CSS, barely in Javascript but I love making a website from scratch and creating things that makes the website more interactive. Seeing a button work, adding images, making the structure of the website, it all intrigues me. It's a hard choice, I'll have to talk more about this with an advisor at college. This video did help me understand a bit more of the differences with web designing and web developing!
That's great to hear, thanks for watching
This is really encouraging. I am primarily working as a developer (native iOS) but also thinking about delving into to world of design. I love the idea you have promoted that in deciding which one you may want to be you are a "Maker" of things - I resonate with that quite highly and gives me a bit more confidence into trying something else I haven't done before
I’m so so glad you enjoyed the video! Taking ownership is huge and can make such a difference to our approach and intentionality!
WOW!! This is really helpful!! Thank you so much for sharing this information with us :D
Hey Jesse, great video. I found it really informative and you can obviously tell you're really passionate about what you do. Love your energy as well. Keep up the good work
Thanks for the support Grant. I’ll try to keep it going 👌🏼
Dude! this video really helped me to take the right choice! I am studying programming and I am like bored every single day, I mean, codes work for me, but I am more a "visual" person, probably I discovered a new way to follow with web design, again, thank you!
That's awesome
Best explanation ive seen on youtube by far thanks to you my friend has decided what to study
Awesome!
Thanks, Jesse for the encouraging, informative breakdown, looking forward to having my new career!
Thanks so much!
I just stumbled on your channel and it's great, clear explanations and not boring at all, keep it up. :)
Thanks so much, more coming soon
Excellent video brother, you made it simple to understand and interesting to watch. This video genuinely helped me find some guidance and I really appreciate that. Good luck to you man and I hope all is well
I started the video, i saw that you immediately got to the point with clear voice and structured report, i literally clicked on the sub button, awesome video and content, don't stop and i advice you to do more of comparison videos, the internet is filled with complicated terms and people all over the world want have a such an amazing explanation.
GOOD LUCK
Thanks so much, Gena Tech!! Welcome aboard and stay tuned, so much more to come!!
Hey Jesse, I really enjoyed your video and subscribed to your channel. I'm a Web Designer but I'm also learning CSS, HTML for websites. Thanks for this video. Much appreciated.
You bet 👍🏼
Can you tell me what your favorite, or most important class you took for CSS and HTML? I need to begin learning a working knowledge of both.
This is one of my favorite videos yet. Thanks for always dropping awesome content. We'd love to get you back on our podcast sometime! 👍👍
Love to, anytime guys
Thank you for this! I'm looking into both web design and web development.
Great video! You broke the two down in such a simplistic manner. I have a much better understanding now. Thanks for sharing.
I’m so so glad I brought some clarity, Monet! Go make rad things! 💛
Loved it! Helpful and informative! ☺
this is actually so inspiring.
makes me hungry for the job
keep it up! :D
Awesome 👍🏼
Fine one brother... Nice, so happy I have an HTML and Css knowledge so I am good to go for web design
Thank you so much for this video you answered the question that has been driving me crazy. I definitely don't like doing puzzles face down so design is the route for me it looks like. I just needed someone to break it down so I could clearly understand the difference.
I'm so glad it helped, good luck on your career 👍🏼
Perfect one for the newbies like me who can't decide what to do with web designing.
So what you choose??
Same here brought a course webdesigner but got the web developer part guess they decided that was the most important pat for them xD i dont mind tho
Do both cause WYSIWYG on front end...and at the end of the day, it's mostly inserted templets of prewritten code going into coded Structures.
Thanks for the explanation. I'm going down the path of a web designer. Did a bit of programming, but when it came to PHP and JavaScript, we'll hold me by the hair and drag me across the classroom, I just couldn't get it. I will return to it, one day. 👍🏽
go where your passions are 👍
thank you. it helps me a lot cuz I just interested in learning web development. watching a few videos about web development, but couldn't find a real answer, but your videos help me. thank you so much
So glad I was able to help out!
This was a very helpful video! Easy to follow and understand. Thank you so much!!
Out of the 6 videos I've watched, you gave the best explanation. Your volume is the lowest though haha
+Jean-Louis Du Plessis so glad it was a help to you, let me know if there is any other topics I could cover that would interest you. Also I'll check the volume 👍🏼
Saa Gr that's a great idea for a video, I'll add it to my list to make soon 👍🏼
Great video. Very well explained.
Great explanation! My daughter is very visual and interested in web design. 😊
Thank you Jesse for making this video to clear the differences for me. I have no idea what it is and I'm going to jump on:)a call on Friday to discuss an opportunity. This video makes me have more confidence about this topic, it has great value. Keep up the good work:)
Glad you enjoyed it
Well-explained!! Was searching for this, but couldn't find any other such explanation!! Lots of thanks 😍🤗
👍🏼
This video solves my 90% confusion. Thanks a lot man ❤
Your so welcome
Thank you for the video Jesse. I really appreciate how you touched upon both professions because I'm both analytical and visually inclined/artistic so I've been trying to figure out whether I should get into web design or web development. Where does UX design fall here? and would you recommend us to start with web development or web design first if we want to do both?
UX is it's own discipline and you just need to start if you want to do both.
Thank you Jesse. This video is really helpful! Cheers!
I like your video presentation. It is informative too, at the same time. Thanks a lot for your guidance!
ACTUALLY U HELPED ME TO FIGURE SOMETHING OUT I THOUGHT DOING DEVELOPMENT WILL BE CORRECT FOR ME BUT AFTER THIS VIDEO I THINK IM A KIND OF PERSON WHO LIKES EDITING,VISUALIZING EXCETRA SO I DECIDED TO STUDY WEB DESIGNING..:-)
Yes! Go get em!
Superb video. Last bit really resonated with me.
Thanks for sharing your insight.
+Digitally Perry thanks for watching man, I'm glad it was a help to you. Let me know if there is anything else I can cover that would be helpful
😊
i haven’t even watched many videos comparing the two and i don’t need to because this is the best explanation
Thanks so much, Vicky!!
Good points Jesse. Love the way you separate the two divisions.
Thanks for the support 👍🏼
There are talented, motivated web designers who learn web dev, and talented web developers who can learn design. Those renaissance professionals end up getting the better jobs and getting the best salaries. Or, building the best products since they can work on both. You should strive to expand your skills both towards the functional and the aesthetics. UI/UX Design is moving closer towards the front end.
Great insights 👍🏼
Hey there! I wanna do UI / UX and front end as well! What should I be focusing on to learn in my free time, I’m in college rn, in a coding-related degree program but not purely focusing on the areas I’m interested in
Basics of design/design theory first, then digital design principles for web and mobile, then UX related topics like research, data, users etc...
Thanks for the clarity bro!!!
Great video! I just gave this video a bump in a college class I'm teaching, a student asked what the difference between web design and web developer was.
Thanks so much for the support!
Thanks for the information on both and the analogy with the car and the engine. Really love it. Question for you. I'm looking to dabble into web design but can't afford something like Photoshop. Is there some other alternative to Photoshop that might help me when starting out with designing websites? I'm completely new to all of this and I'm currently taking a course in school learning HTML, CSS, and JavaScript. So I kind of want to touch some design to see if it's something that I would like. I feel like I would like to dive into both and would appreciate any feedback from you!! Thanks again!!
Affinity Photo would be a great alternative, I also recommend Sketch but if you just needed 1 program that could do it all and is similar to Photoshop I would choose Affinity.
Jesse Showalter Awesome. Thank you for the reply! I’ll go check out Affinity.
Hey, thanks for this video. I was wondering if you made sure to learn data structures and algorithms before becoming a web developer? Is it something you recommend for me to learn?
I am a front end guy so data structures and algorithms aren’t my thing
Thank you so much for your explanation. It really helped to decide which one will be better for me. 😊
That’s great to hear
I love the way you explained this, very helpful.
Hi Jesse, I am a graphics designer. & i know graphics design very well. Though web design looks like graphics design that's why i wanna learn web development. Do you think my decision is right? if wrong then give me a suggestion.
I think you could start by learning front end development and see if it's something that you enjoy. Since HTML and CSS are tied so closely with the layout and design of a website it would be a logical next step. If you learn that you enjoy coding then my suggestion would be to learn javascript and then from there the sky is the limit.
Hi,I watch the full video & I found it amazing.

Thanks a lot dude..💞.Really loved it..I am a developer.. Now I want to know about the designing techniques too😊

GREAT JOB ON THE EXPLANATION. I FOUND THE INFORMATION I WAS LOOKING FOR.
Yes!! So stoked!!
thank you very much bro. Now I have some ideas about this two.
Actually Node js is a runtime that allows us to run js on the server.
Good clarification, sometimes I get talking so fast things just blurt out
AWWWWWWWWWWWW SNAP!
I have designed my first website, like to learn both for sure! ( BTW. is on my channel... would like to hear some opinions.... )
Being a creative guy my whole life I really like the aspect to design my website the way I want.
But I think learning both will give me the Independence I am looking for at the end.
Anway great video!
Thank You! This video was very helpful in helping me understand what I am looking for!
That’s great to hear
Love the passion! So inspiring. I’m so interested in Web/Graphic Design and I’m stuck doing something completely unrelated. I wish I had the confidence to pursue it!

@@sullyy2k1 i'm bringing you back to this 3 years later hoping, with all my heart, that you've taken a step towards creating and investing yourself & your time into what you know in your heart you genuinely want to do. i say "a step" specifically because honestly? that's really 99% of what it takes. that's usually the hardest part of creating the life YOU want and trust me, if you can get THAT done, you're so much closer to the life YOU want - much closer than you can ever imagine or believe.

You have to get it hosted but you dont have to do it your self.
@@JesseShowalter thank you for your response.
no problem
Hi from Portugal, Jesse!
I really enjoyed your video and subscribed to your channel. I'd like to ask you a question: Do you think it's harder for a person who learned by CZcams and online courses to get a job in this area than a person who has a degree from college?
Is there this kind of prejudice in this area or the only thing that really matters to the employers is if you know how to do even if you don't have a degree?
I am a self-taught designer and developer and in my opinion, people care more about what you can do than what a piece of paper says. Just make sure you can do what you say you can and do it really well.
Jesse Showalter , thanks a lot!

Awesome explanation by far that i found on CZcams ! Thanks a lot man!
Thanks so much, Milan!! Get out there and make amazing things!! 🤘
Do you think it’s possible I can do web development/design f/t from home?
I’m an introvert and don’t hate people, but I don’t like office politics, clicks, favoritism, gossip, having to talk all the time, etc.
I hate those things also! This is one of the reasons why I want to do web development.
I think there is a place for everyone, I have been blessed to work at some amazing companies that really care about me, so don't give up hope on working at a physical location, but yes you can design or develop full time from home too.
Dionne Petty It’s great to hear that someone else hates toxic work environments! LOL
Jesse Showalter Thanks, but by your video, I can tell you’re a lot more outgoing and charismatic than I am(not that I’m angry/depressed). After the 15+ places I’ve worked, I find that I feel better being at home.
I did transcription from home for a few years & I was very productive & felt free to be me, but the pay was low and the work was inconsistent.
Thanks for making such great videos. Great to see that you love your career. I will watch more of them to keep myself motivated!
YumYum Kitty You're in the same situation as me. I work at home but the work is intermittent and I'm not getting ahead. I wouldn't mind working in an office if I could dip and work from home when I need it.
I hope things have changed in the past two months since you posted this.
I am a painter and Graphics designer. I am also an Art teacher. Via graphics, I do identity and branding, print and digital Marketing design e.g. Brochures and Magazines, Photo I high end retouching among others. I have never found something more important than converting my aesthetic/visual ideas into functional website. So I do all my preparation as designer in a sense that I need to get the right photos and color theme for the website, making sure that they will communicate the right message to the clients. And I make my ideas function by doing coding either in Notepad++ OR in Sublime text Hence a developer. I always want my website to appear responsive enough to much modern devices. Therefore it is hard to be one and not the other.
Great points
I am Happy to know that
Brother where do you live? And do you have a website I can check your work please?! Looking for someone for a serious project! Let me know. Blessings!
I have not yet opened one website of mine. I live in Uganda, Gulu district. I am still working as an Art teacher besides my graphics of which teaching is still taking much of my time. I will be much comfortable to real serious website when I resign from my current job and commit to my design work, may be soon or later. I love creating what makes me happy i.e. my design ideas. My contacts are kisimostev@gmail.com, ojok simon stephen on facebook and ojoksimonstephen7842 on instagram

Thank you so much Jesse for making things much clearer, I like visual things and be creative and at the same time I would love to be a front-end developer.
What would you suggest to study first if I had to choose between web design and front-end developer?
Thank you so much and you earned my sub❤️❤️
Thanks man, extremely helpful! Much appreciated
Client side aka Front-end Development
The problem is nowadays employer most likely will hire a graphic designer with coding knowlede..trust me ive been looking for some graphic designer jobs and most of them requires a g.designer to have coding knowledge
Exactly, this is a serious issue, and needs to be straightened out in the industry.
I think it's because the industry or some group of people are just pushing way too many people into web development, soon it'll become the new coal miners job, plus things like wix or WordPress are also taking the jobs
in my learning i have consistently hear that the need for PURE graphic designers is far and few and that most would benefit from learning web dev skills as well.
@Trinitrophenylnitramine yes i did some coding in college too..but if youre applying for a job theyll be asking you more coding skills...but in the end i knda like coding....been scratching js for a while

Hi Jesse, I'm Vanessa from Nigeria and I have to say I LOVE THIS Video because I've been so confused on which to begin... You basically just explained away my confusion.
I studied architecture in college and in a way, I find myself super interested in both dev and design, somehow I feel my discipline has a very large role to play in that because I've been taught to design with the end game of solving problems, so the end part of your video really resonated with me... I WAS that kid that took the remote apart btw.
Thank you so much for this video. ☺☺
+Vanessa Christian you have such a cool story! It just goes to show that no matter what field your in problems always need solving. So glad that the video was a help 👍🏼👍🏼👍🏼

Hi, this is the first video I've seen from your channel. I am 18 years old, I am learning CSS and JavaScript, but I feel that I've started learning these things pretty late, so I was curious, when did you know what you wanted to do in the future ? What "school" should I choose to study at university if I want to become both a Web designer and a Web developer?
I didn't know what I wanted to do until I was 25. Go to a school that will challenge you but don't go into massive debt for it.

Love the video man, it’s very informative and straight to the point, thanks!
Thank you so much, Zokhid!
I am a web designer and web developer, so it is best to be both
Do what you love.
I saw your video of why you shouldn't go to design school and It got me wondering if you actually went to college or had any form of vocational training. I'm a web design student at 2 yr college (less risk and no debt) and I just wanted to ask if you can make a video on your journey of how you got into graphic/ print design and transitioned to web design in your own journey.
And how you managed to make a portfolio and land a job in both (assuming you didn't go to college). I am a firm believer of teaching your self things as way of proven motivation however when I search for job listings and internships, many say require bachelors degree of some sort?
-Really great content by the way!
Thanks for the encouragement, super happy to hear that you enjoyed the video. I did go to college but only after I had already been working in the industry. That's why I'm of the "don't go to design school" opinion... because it was not a productive use of my time or money. Making a video on my journey is a great idea, I'll put in the queue of videos to make. In a nutshell, I started out making band flyers. then got an internship at my church, then did a mentorship with a friend who is an awesome designer, then got my first full-time job, then freelanced then a design agency, now a startup and freelance. It's a been a while ride. Start making things that excite you, and learn by doing. Stay at it man, nothing good comes without hard work 🤘
Which church do you go?

@Jesse: Thank you for making and sharing this video.
And it's great that you do both. So you are definitely in the position to share this information for us.
I also liked the encouragement you gave towards the end of this video.
I just wanted to mention that I was surprised to hear that web designers, don't have to know code. I heard that they do have to know code.
Btw, I saw your last name and was curious about your nationality.
What's your nationality?
Well I guess web dev is right for me since I learned HTML CSS and currently learns java
TRK_ DAS javascript?
you know java or java script, two completely different things
ItzGeigger ik I was just asking if he meant javascript cuz he mentioned html css and to complete that he needs js anybody up to be my html css teacher pls I suck at self learning
I am Creative as well as curious.... And I've decided to become an ultimate web designer and developer.

This is a fantastic video and just what I was looking for! Thanks so much. I love the visual aspects of things, but I'm really interested in learning HTML, CSS, and Java. By the way, what server languages does a front end developer learn? Thanks Jesse
Im doing both and it's very fine for me
right on!
That is what I want to do. 😊
Linnaia Crist you can start with the design first which is the right thing then move slowly to development
Lol, I still don't understand, when I design a website, I also add functionality to it, without that how will you see your work, on the page. So is this mean I am learning both web designing and development or just one?? , if one pls let me know which one.
I think I am learning both as I am making the view of the website and even adding functionality to it.
One more short question, don't we need to do those together, when we are writing code???
mohammed mohsen i also want to do is it possible in company or freelancing?
Jesse Showalter, forgot Perl, again - one of the most used languages for any developement, including the web developement.
lol not sure if this is a joke or not
Fantastic explanation my friend! You did an excellent job on this one.
