I love this song! You version is an interesting blend of the original NIN version and Jonny Cash's version, I think. You opted for Cash's "crown of thorns" (rather than NIN's "crown of shit") and chose the lower and more pondering voice, similar to Cash. But the music is closer to NIN's discordant notes and your higher parst of the chorus are also closer to the original. All in all - great job! Thanks, Colm!

Johnny Cash and NIN both come out in this, indeed, but forgive me if I like Cash's version more. My parents were fans and he was so familiar to me, his story and June Carter's. This song always makes me cry as he is old and remembering those days. Getting old myself, you see. I look forward to working my way through all you have on CZcams.

This version is so beautiful! There are definitely elements that feel like they are blended from both the original and Johnny Cash's cover that combine to make it feel something totally distinct, not to mention your own gorgeously orchestral style!

Love that you actually credited Nine Inch Nails correctly. Too many people only know the (amazing) Johnny Cash cover.
I know he actually knows and studies his music knowledge very well that's one of the other reasons I love his covers
NIN's songwriter, Trent Reznor prolifically responded to Cash's “Hurt” cover with: “I wasn't prepared for what I saw, and it really then, wasn't my song anymore.”

He did use the Cash version of the song. Cash changed it from crown of shit to crown of thorns.
The amazing thing about this song is that Reznor's original has a completely different meaning to that of Cash's cover. Cash was nearing the end of his life and his frailty, regret and fear emanated from every note of the song. Reznor's original was a snapshot of a very dark time in his life due to substance abuse. This version somehow manages to encapsulate both versions with perhaps a little more emphasis on the NIN version. Superb cover.

Okay, This was just staggering, the comfort with which you hit those low notes and then jumping into the latter part of the chorus the way you did, so powerful, and you carried such a good energy through the whole thing, great job

I got to say you really outdid yourself this time Colm, I love the mixing of the Cash cover and the original. Plus that bass was great, and going into the tenor was moving. This is probably my favorite cover of yours.

This feels like the perfect blend between both Johnny Cash and Nine Inch Nails. The instrumental and melody are closer of NIN's, but the lyrics and the way they are sung are reminiscent of Cash.
I actually don't know this song yet so I can't really share the high expectations (apart from the fact that my expectations are always high when a new cover of yours comes out) from the comment section but I think I will like it nonetheless. My playlist grows bigger and bigger
It's a great song. Even Trent, the original writer and singer, thinks Johnny Cash's versu9n is the best.

Holy shit. This one is just as powerful as Johnny Cash's version, but in a different way. That contrast between the highs and lows and the volume change with it just drives it into your soul. Definitely going to be listening to this one a lot.
This song just gives me chills. First time I've ever heard it, but the words and notes perfectly describe the feelings of a character in the book I'm writing. Adding this to my book writing playlist so I can really get in the mindset. As always, Colm, your cover is brilliant!

It is literally a perfect blend between the Jonny Cash and NIN version.
2 things I loved. That you kept "Crown of thorns" instead of the original "crown of sh$@", which was the ONLY change to the original lyrics Johnny made and was considered his signature.
But the actual instrumentals and production and your dragon bass voice definitely harkens back to the gritty, DARK version that is the original especially the closing sequence and closing notes.
All in all, as a fan of the original and Johnny cash's,
BRAVO.

I’m relaxing and hang out with my friend a lot (we restored a Hatchet together 😂). Some fun times, also I’m getting ready to set up my own blacksmithing workshop and that’s just plain awesome! I’m looking forward to seeing you tomorrow as well ❤️

@@Elena-lu7tl Well I’m in my dads garage with a nice drill press, a pretty big workbench, including some accessories and now I’ve added a small anvil and a propane forge, I’m currently setting up, to my equipment. Soon there’ll be some noise complaints coming in lol. I plan on practicing making knives (mostly historical ones) and then move to hatchets and the like, I’ll also try to make some smaller projects such as a grill for the outdoors and similar things we’ll see how it goes ;) pretty excited though. Btw it’s so kind to show interest You’re awesome!

I have rarely heard a cover get imbued with that level of emotion. I don't often get chills, but this one did it.

This song...was such a bold choice to cover and well done. I feel it is a lovely marriage between the two versions. I'm glad you kept 'crown of thorns' from Cash's version. You voice, mingled with the discordant notes creates an eerie feel particularly in the opening that is attention grabbing. Your pacing, inflection and tone feel similar but different at the same time which is great. I really like how you convey a sense of yearning which is really felt though 'liar's chair' and 'broken thoughts'. The drop on the word 'repair' feels dramatic and impactful and you carry that through the song. The higher notes towards the end create a climatic feel that just punches the emotion all through in a way that's just great with an end that feels determined. Sorry if I am picking through this so much! I really like the song. Great job as always your vocal chords clearly have the Midas Touch there. BTW, would love some Kareoke of your versions of songs like Wild Mountain Thyme and Black and Tans!

I’ve been listening to this cover nonstop lately, and I will admit, there is a lot of inspiration I’ve taken away from it. Those low notes are so velvety but angelic, and the main chorus is sung with such pure emotion. The cinematic approach to such a evil tainted song makes it feel so alive and remarkable, I just can’t get enough of it. Hats off to you Colm!
