Assassin's Creed Unity is an action-adventure video game developed by Ubisoft Montreal and published by Ubisoft. It was released in November 2014 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, and in December 2020 for Stadia.[1] It is the eighth major installment in the Assassin's Creed series, and the successor to 2013's Assassin's Creed IV: Black Flag. It also has ties to Assassin's Creed Rogue, which was released for the previous generation consoles on the same day as Unity.
The plot is set in a fictional history of real world events and follows the centuries-old struggle between the Assassins, who fight for peace with free will, and the Templars, who desire peace through control. The framing story is set in the 21st century and features an unnamed and unseen protagonist, who joins the Assassins as an initiate to help them locate the corpse of an 18th century Sage before Abstergo (the modern-day incarnation of the Templars). The main story is set in Paris during the French Revolution and follows Assassin Arno Victor Dorian and his efforts to expose the true powers behind the Revolution. The game retains the series' third-person open world exploration as well as introducing a revamped combat, parkour and stealth system. The game also introduces cooperative multiplayer to the Assassin's Creed series, letting up to four players engage in narrative-driven missions and explore the open world map.
Assassin's Creed Unity received mixed reviews upon release. It was praised for its visuals, customization options, setting, and characterization. Critics were more polarized on its narrative, mission design, multiplayer-oriented format, and gameplay, with the latter in particular complimented for its improvements, but criticized for a lack of innovation and for feeling unrefined. The game was also widely panned for its numerous graphical issues and bugs, prompting Ubisoft to issue an apology and offer compensation. In the years since Unity's release, after most of the technical issues were resolved, the game has undergone positive critical re-evaluations, and is retrospectively considered to be an underrated and under-appreciated title in the Assassin's Creed series. The game was also a favorable commercial success, selling over 10 million copies worldwide, and saw a resurgence in sales in the early 2020s.
Assassin's Creed Unity was followed in October 2015 by Assassin's Creed Syndicate, which continues the modern-day narrative, but has its main plot set in Victorian era London.
Assassin's Creed Unity is an action-adventure[3] stealth game set in an open world environment. The game's combat system was meant to be rebuilt, with fencing being used as an inspiration for the new system. In addition to returning weapons from previous games, Assassin's Creed Unity introduces the Phantom Blade. The Phantom Blade uses the mechanics of a crossbow to fire a silent projectile at a great distance, while still serving the same role as the Hidden Blade in previous Assassin's Creed games.[4] Navigation for the game was also overhauled: new "Free-run up" and "Free-run down" commands were added to make it easier for the player to scale buildings in either direction.

Unity is actually one of my favorite AC games. It's unfortunate that it just gets remembered as the broken AC game. Getting past the bugs it had on release, it was the peak of the series in my opinion. It had a large emphasis on stealth, combat had some issues yet still felt like it was refined like it was a step up from the combat before it, it even had armor with its own stats without over doing it as they do now. I was fortunate enough to not run into many problems so maybe that why i enjoyed it more. More should go and give it another try.

I'd have given my right arm for a Unity sequel that saw Arno seek out Old Man Connor for helping hunt down Shay. I know it wouldn't have worked for timeline-related reasons, what with Shay already getting on a bit when Arno was just a kid, but a crossover event that brought together all of those characters/eras would have been insane.

    • @ezzy384
      @ezzy384 Před 7 měsíci

@dougpederson5625 because the writing team at ubisoft isn't allowed to just do what they want. Ubisoft execs have committees that they force devs and writers to answer to so they don't make something too niche, so they can capture a "broader audience" so the execs can make more money this year than the last year. That's why the rpg trilogy exists. Because The Witcher 3 was financially and critically successful, the execs and committees ordered the ubisoft devs to make Witcher 3 but with an assassin's creed coat of paint.

I have experienced literally like 0 glitches in all of my time playing ac unity over the years, hundreds of hours im sure. To be fair, i did wait until a year after it launched to get it because of the horrible reviews about it being glitchy, but in my experience they seemed to have ironed it out quickly. This is without a doubt in my mind the best gameplay ac unity has ever had, and i think it is the best designed city in all of AC. I slept on this game for a while, when i first got it and played it i just wasnt impressed for some reason, and i didnt like the story. In hindsight my love for the older AC games was literally blinding me to the incredible improvements this game made. This AC, and the british one after, are the last non "bullet sponge" like enemies of AC. Origins at least had instant assassinations but the combat was nowhere near as good as AC Unity'. The parkour has literally never felt better and the fact that they got rid of free running down is an absolute shame, but i do understand that it would have been a fucking nightmare to code that in a way that works in the open worlds of origins, odyssey etc. The stealth gameplay is literally top notch, first ac to add a dedicated crouch button (took ubisoft way too fucking long to do that) and paris' large crowds are perfect for the blend mechanic, which is also the best its ever been since its directly tied to gear bonus' and skills, so you could be a heavy armored assassin who just crushed through everyone, or be a perfect stealth assassin that is able to blend into the crowd so well that you can stealth assassinate and then quickly disappear in the crowd. Also smaller point but this game has the best cloth physics (at least for player character clothing, which is the most important) out of any other AC game

I played at launch (well, like 1 week after cause I got the collectors edition and took forever to be delviered). By then, there was launch day and 1 other patch I believe. I had a bit of pop in with the AI NPCs (but thats just a render limitation, not a bug IMO), and a couple times I noticed hitching when running around the town. And I had 2 . . . 2! . . . total crashes. (I kept track cause I heard it was bad). Origins, Odyssey, and Valhalla have all crashed more then Unity did on me.
Literally, thats it. No horror faces. No people disappearing. Don't recall combat halting the middle of it. I 100%, so no bugs on missions. There is plenty of footage out there of the issues, but I still can't comprehend how it was so bad for so many other people cause my experience was exactly on par with other gaming experiences.

Wassail, you took the words right out of my mouth.
I got Unity for Christmas, 2014, by which time it was already massively patched. I've played it so much over the last 7 years, no doubt clocking several hundred hours if not more. I know I've only ever had 2 bugs/glitches - one where a dead guard got caught in a stall and started going crazy, and one other time when I fell through the floor. But those are just two times! The Witcher 3, another of my all time favourite games, had many more than that!
I also don't understand people's issue with Arno - I liked him as a character, he was charming and I understood his motivations, and that how well he knows Élise means he sees that Templars aren't by definition evil, and them teaming up pragmatically felt right.
Unity is quite possibly my favourite game *overall* in this franchise, and one of my favourite games full stop. I know I've been lucky to have a near entirely unbuggy experience with it, but I struggle to think of a single game of such scope that hasn't glitched or faltered

Personally, I loved that Arno didnt fit into the Assassin box. The point that's being driven home is that assassin's arent necessarily good. Templar's arent bad. Arno was stuck in the middle. He didnt ask to be an assassin, Bellec convinced him to be an assassin, seeing him as a tool to be used against his hated templars. Everything is always compared to Ezio. Ezio is the perfect assassin. But after 3 games of him, Im tired of the perfect assassin. Seeing these characters who don't fit the mold find their own way to the assassin ideology is much more interesting for me. My major gripe about Unity's story is the pacing. There's a huge chunk in the middle where it's just a checklist. Wish they had used it instead to flesh out Arno's relationship with Bellec before having to kill him. Also without the dlc, the game ends at a weird spot right before Arno's character resolution. Luckily, Dead Kings is free so they didnt keep that arc behind a paywall.

Solid breakdown, jayvee!! You have made me wanna play Unity again... and I have over two hundred hours in it lol. I am so with you on the De La Saire plot being a footnote & getting Arno to being a fully invested Assassin much earlier in the story. I also yearn for sequel stories that are decidedly about the Assassin agenda & how it weaves in and out of history as we know it.
Which all leads to a question of direction. Right now AC sits in this gnarly mid-ground between serial story and disconnected anthology. It wants long-time fans to still think it's going somewhere, but has largely proven that it's more interested in telling self-contained stories that mirror one-another. When you said "Even if they had given us something to chew on, we probably wouldn't have seen the ending anyway", it made me wonder if we'll ever see *an* ending to Assassin's Creed or if Assassin's Creed needs an ending at all. What do you think?

I would kill for a sequel story!! The Ezio games showed us how great those stories can be so it's just tough to not think about it when playing the new ones.
On the ending of AC, that's an awesome question. I almost think you can look at every game since AC3 and get your answer. Ubi doesn't seem to want to end it and maybe that's why the endings of the newer games feel less satisfying. Personally I like when stories have endings, I think closure is a big part of what makes me enjoy a story. These games seem to just "end". I think that's what I love about Black Flag, you get some SERIOUS closure in that game that hits like a train. There's other reasons that one worked so well but I'm with you, I wonder if we'll ever see the end. My money is on that we won't, not unless this thing crashes and burns.

Great point about Black flag. It had a powerful character resolution for Edward. In some ways it mirrored Ezio's journey in that way we had a full career with him before he sailed back to England. That seems pretty rare in AC games for the sake of their origin story-ness. I'm the same way; I want a satisfying ending to a game's story and eventually to a franchise altogether. People hated it back in those years too, I've read. You guys talk among yourselves, so you think everyone thinks that way. I hated Star Trek TNG doing these drawn out long one planet 2 or 3 parters. I had bought this game either at launch or recently after launch on my PS4 back in the day. It was the first Assassin's Creed game that I had ever played through and though I heard all about the negative reviews and hate for the game, I played through the game and if there were any bugs experienced, it definitely wasn't enough to ruin my experience! I absolutely loved playing through this game! In a similar fashion, I also played through Arkham Origins and that game ended up being my absolute favorite game in the Batman Arkham series games! I'm loving this video

I played unity years after it was released just to stay busy for a few hrs and I ended up really liking the game. Running around paris was really fun and I enjoyed the combat a lot

I’m replaying it now actually! I don’t know why I used to think I didn’t like this game… but now in replying I realise I love it too.
It also seems to be the first game in the series that starts to sway away from constant desynchronisations, and I’m all for it. I loved that the game pretty much said, “Here you go, here’s your mission/here’s your target. Use the people and situations around you to create your own outcome.”
It made it so much more enjoyable for me, rather than playing by the book and getting really angry cause you can’t achieve full synchronisation on each mission. It completely gave you your own freedom to play the game how you wanted to all while somehow still feeling like an Assassin’s Creed game. You wanna be super stealthy? Great. You wanna go in all guns a blazin’. No worries. You wanna try stealth but then get caught halfway through and end up fighting out the rest of the mission? That’s cool too.
So yeah I really like it actually!

I always felt Unity was the best in the series when it comes down the formula we loved in the first game. We need to go back to this style. 👌🏻🙌🏻

Absolutely fantastic video. I agree with your take on the gameplay clashing with the story; it's called "Ludonarrative Dissonance." I started a replay of Unity on my PS5 after last playing it in 2015 and I've really come to appreciate it much more. Yes, there are issues (like with ludonarrative dissonance). However, like you said - this is the ultimate Assassin fantasy. Had the game been given more time to roast (or bake, whichever the goto metaphor), this could've been one of the best Assassin's Creed games and high up with the Ezio trilogy and other titles.
Hopefully, Mirage takes us back to this and much more.

As a French dude with a Degree in History, this game just offered my biggest virtual orgasm when Napoleon popped up in the story! The real historical figures in this game - and their stories - are fantastic : even in coop missions when defending Danton, stories with the Girondists, Mirabeau at the Pantheon...
I have no words to express how much I still love to dive into this 230+ YO Paris

I don't have a degree in History but I loved all history classes from "collège" to "lycée". And I did get the "OMG THAT'S NAPOLEON" when he turned around in that room. I was smiling stupidly at my computer as he introduced himself 😂 I don't know, going through Revolution Paris and trying to see all the little details they kept or adpated was indeed really enjoyable 😋

Love it man. I figured you’d be positive so I’d been looking forward to this video. One thing that didn’t get mentioned is that I think the point about Arno embracing the Brotherhood wasn’t really tied up until Dead Kings so I think he does come full circle there but not in the main storyline. Helping Leon really helps him get his mind right

Unity is my favourite AC game, had the best parkour, stealth, and yes the Assassin fantasy, it's an awesome game and I loved it when it first came out as well. I hated that everyone was hating on it in the beginning but I'm glad it's getting the recognition it deserves now.

This game honestly reminds me of the Star Wars prequels in a way I always loved the prequels and AC unity but both things got unreasonable hate from a decent amount of ppl when they first came out but after some time both the prequels and AC unity are getting the love and respect they deserve
