    I thoroughly enjoy your videos. It is so nice to see happy animals. A word of caution, very chubby cats are prone to diabetes. I know this because one of my cats was diagnosed with diabetes in December. She weighed 14 lbs. It has been quite the adventure. Back and forth to the vet weekly, then bi-monthly to check her glucose levels. She is on a high protein canned food only, twice a day. $3 USD per can. No dry food at all. No treats. Too many carbs in it. She gets 2 insulin shots a day, as well. It has been so expensive. I just thought I'd bring this up to you...all in kindness. I wish you well, always! Love from Texas ❤

    DUCK POND BUILD CONCERNS: hi chad, just started watching recently and think your doing a great job! You mentioned building a duck pond and wanted to save the liquid gold the ducks leave in it. On a channel I’ve watched for years ( living traditions homestead ) did a duck pond in area they let ducks roam. It may not be the type pond your thinking about but they built a drainage system to help with cleaning and keeping it and area around it clean. They love sharing what they do so other may find something that makes their situation easier and also, they are very open and share when something doesn’t work. Their video was 8 mo ago and title. “The ducks finally get a pool waddlesville coming ……………. “ It may contain something you can take away that will help you in your build. I know what you build will be great for your situation. Looking forward to watching you grow your homestead. Mimi

    • @HiddenSpringFarm
      @HiddenSpringFarm  Před 3 měsíci

      Ok I’ve watched that video and while that serves their area ok or if you have 5-6 ducks but once you have more ducks not so sure. Plus I’d love to see a follow up video cause I’d like to know how they keep the drain from clogging. I plan on doing something a lot different and a little more pleasing to the eye. I’ve got a bunch ideas I just have put the work in. It’s gonna be fun though.

    In Florida they lite tiki torches type flames (only bigger) on nights where there might be a frost on their orange trees, for the same reason. They don't want to loose their hundreds of acres of oranges. They are large enough to produce enough heat to keep the tree buds, fruits and flowers from freezing.

    Research biological (bog) filtered low voltage pump ponds for your ducks. There is a CZcams channel from an Aussie guy called Kev ( Oz Ponds) who is an amateur enthusiast for building ponds cheaply and keeping the pond clean with a minimum of work.

      @sciwolf359 Před 3 měsíci +2

    • @virginiacharlotte7007
      @virginiacharlotte7007 Před 3 měsíci

      @@sciwolf359 a duck or turtle pond will need a somewhat oversized bog filter to account for the mess that these animals make, eg 40% of the volume of the actual pond as opposed to 10-20% bog filter size: pond ratio for a gold fishpond that is not being overstocked. Also, the bog filter itself may need to be flushed out more regularly than on a standard fish pond, but over all, it could be a good way to get a natural looking duck pond made for Chad’s purposes and it could really add to the attractiveness of the farm stay. Filter flushes will be great for the veggie patch and Chad would need to account for pond care in a sub-zero winter environment. We don’t get too many of those snowy winters in Australia 😊- so there will be some nuances to consider when viewing the Oz Ponds channel info. I think a proper duck pond for hidden springs farm is a great idea.

    If you make your duck pond a NATURAL pond, digging it down where the roots are from this threes you going to to remove, it won’t matter that the duckies "poop" in it…. It will naturally go into the soil itself… which is what you want to happen! You could suck out the mud and muck I suppose, keeping a natural compacted soil bottom… I wouldn’t make a solid bottom out of anything other than the natural ground soil you already have…. You can ask set up a natural drainage system over into your garden to collect that wonderful naturally fertilized water! Just keep replenishing the water with a hose or better yet, dig yourself a well and put a pump there!

    • @HiddenSpringFarm
      @HiddenSpringFarm  Před 3 měsíci

      The soil is sandy so it won’t hold water, it has to be done using an edpm liner. I’ll do some filtration and can use a utility pump to remove water if I need to. It’ll be a trial and error kind of deal. Pond filtration can get into the thousands of $$ so we’ll see how it goes.

    You need a really long vacuum hose and put the vacuum outside the building then there will be no dust might cost a little money for the longer hose but you only have to buy it once spraying water inside the building will make a muddy mess.

    I think its called bentonight, the clay that seals a pond . Have you checked into it? not sure price but something that wont need replacing in a few years is what i was thinking.

    • @HiddenSpringFarm
      @HiddenSpringFarm  Před 3 měsíci +1

      Yes Bentonite or blue clay but really it’s usually used in a bigger type pond where you can have the huge roller push it into the base. It should be like 12” thick. But an edpm liner will last decades anyway especially if it’s out of the uv rays. I’m talking of a 20’ pond with ledges for plant life. Clay can only be added to a bowl style pond with gradual slopes and no vertical edges. Not an expert though by any means 😉

    I would and do use the EPDM pond liner. Suggest a solar powered pump maybe Aquatec diapragm type. Need flow and aeration.

    • @HiddenSpringFarm
      @HiddenSpringFarm  Před 3 měsíci

      Initial plan is to have a stream with falls for aeration and a pond filter of course. I’d have to look into a solar powered pump though and see what fits our needs best.

    Eww goats smell so bad, but the babies are so cute. Isn't there a way to insulate the buds on the orchard trees? Tape sandwich bags and insulate with cheep pillow inserts and tape up for cold spells maybe?

      Yes but it’s still expensive like a liner and you’re not sure if it’s sealed or not. It’s just gonna be a smallish pond so I’d rather just do a liner to be sure.
