  • Director John Frankenheimer, writer George Axelrod, and star Frank Sinatra discuss the making of their motion picture "The Manchurian Candidate" 1962 film(recorded in 1988)
The film was re-released in 1988 after so many years on the shelf from its oriignal run in 1962, so that future generations could appreciate its greatness. It is a biting political satire and a first class thriller rolled into one based on Richard Condon's excellent book.

Sinatra was certainly the catalyst for The Manchurian Candidate becoming a film. Frankenheimer had already developed an excellent reputation as a television director, having done The Days Of Wine and Roses and The Comedian on Playhouse 90; he had also probably completed Birdman Of Alcatraz with Lancaster.and All Fall Down with Beatty. Sinatra had excellent chemistry with Harvey and Leigh and his performance was several levels higher as a result of Frankenheimer's direction.

1:44 totally reminds me of Martin Scorsese, Paul Schrader, and Robert De Niro on "Taxi Driver". Same vibe.

It's simple accommodation for someone who doesn't want to be there (not cowering) Writers and Producers talk a mile a minute and Frank doesn't (he doesn't have to ;) ). The basic strategy for a recorded interview is "keep it moving" no awkward silences- today, we leave it in and call it Sit-Com or reality TV

Having just watched the opening sequence of this marvellous movie again I've noticed that Francis Coppola lifted - or was inspired at least - the bit where Sinatra's lying on the bed and the camera roams around his possessions for his movie Apocalypse Now
