      Absolutely true! I went to Tech School two years. Right after graduation I got a job at a Toyota dealership and that's exactly what I said too... Unless you're single fresh out of Tech School with no mortgage and not a lot of bills to pay then it's a good start.

    So many shops put the burden of operations on the techs. We buy our own tools. We pay for our own education and certs in many cases. Shops expect tecs to do free repairs in cases where a new part has failed. (I.E. Duralast, Dorman, ect) Many shops expect techs to work unpaid overtime to get the job done. The pay structure needs to be overhauled. Flat rate doesn't work with the type of problems newer cars are having. I love what i do, but the problem is with the shops not listening to their employees concerns, manufacturers lowering the flag times, and inadequate parts suppliers. No one wants to work twelve hour days for slightly below average pay.

    33 years as a tech. Pay is just good enough that i cant start over in a better industry. It will not get better. People have been saying it will get better for my entire career. I listen to young techs complain about all the same things that i did and the generation before me. Thats 60 years worth of problems. When i started the old guys used to talk about a pay scale of 45% shop labor rate and 10% of parts markup.If you are young, get out while you still can. It’s been declining and will continue to trend that way. As a general rule, society doesn’t budget for auto repairs and is widely considered to be the most painful use of their money in existence. If you decide to become a tech, realize that most people hate you and will never respect you.

      We own a motorcycle dealership. Our techs get paid on commission hours. Our best tech will make 3-4k a week sometimes. I have never seen him pull in less than 2k. And like you say. Woke is endless. We just hired a guy who originally lived 4 hours away. He worked at a dealership making $35 a hour. I don’t know how some of these places sleep at night. And then they wander why techs arnt happy and the shop reviews are awful. I wouldn’t care either for $35 a hours.

    What we work on today has become extremely complex.
    In a Customers mind, that doesn’t matter. So Service Writers write jobs based off what the time it takes to do the job when everything goes smoothly. Problem is: there is no such thing as smooth anymore. Multiple model designs, parts shortages, electronic issues, Customer has had his buddy already working on it, Parts Manuals that are out of date, change upon change dictated by Government Regulations…list never ends.

    There's a lot to unpack here.
    We are seeing more and more shops taking on the financial burden of tools and equipment.
    It's crazy, but many shops offer and pay for training, but struggle to get techs to attend, online or live in-person.

    I started working on my bicycle then my car then I became an aircraft mechanic I just retired and have spent 45 years in aviation. What I see is the lack of $. I never take my car to the dealer, I have never had a good experience, they always try to up sale you and quite a few times they do a bad job. I don't want to talk to some schmuck in a white coat, I want to talk to the mechanic. I do most of my own work ,anything heavy I have a local shop that I trust. Been a mechanic it's a very difficult and backbreaking job, poorly compensated. I think basically it's the pay that is the problem. There going to have to increase the pay for things to improve. It takes a long time to be good at it.

    This problem was coming for over 20 years, all the companies and shops knew it and did nothing and will continue to do nothing about it. They took all the benefits and incentives away over the years it's not worth it anymore. I'm tired of hearing them tell us we make $100,000 or more a year, because most mechanics don't, most of us make between $30,00 to $65,000 a year, and with all the experience, training and tools you need to do the job, it's not worth the investment. Everyone in the industry is getting paid except the ones doing the work. I walked away after 20+ years to building maintenance you get the same pay without all the cost and BS

    As a mechanic myself, I started on cars and trucks, then graduated to industrial machines and heavy equipment. Now, I jumped ship and work as an operating engineer/ mechanic.
    The point here is that the whole industry views automotive mechanics as an entry-level wrench dirt-ball hick. And, to be fair, that is the status quo.
    To fix this industry, the view of us mechanics have to change to reflect how incredibly intelligent and realistic we really are. For example, European countries require mechanics to have an engineering degree (go figure).
    I would propose the industry create a field of engineering for us mechanics, and allow seasoned professionals receive that degree for free. The new generation would need to obtain that themselves.
    Every mechanic knows this EXACT IDEA. It's called, the tool truck. If you want someone to buy something expensive, make it exclusive.

    Flat rate has to go and repair shops should buy hand tools and pay a mechanic a hourly employee wage. Flat Rate benefits F&I, lenders, warranty, dealership owners, car manufacturers, but not the mechanic because they conduct how the mechanic gets paid they dont compete for the best talent they control the pay of the mechanics which is smart. As a matter of fact flat rate is a written law loop hole in the IRS wage /earning rate to which they withhold taxes from an employee.

    I am so fed up w incompetent mechanics screwing up my vehicles. My latest debacle was the mechanic opening the radiator on my wifes car adding fluid in it instead of the reservoir and not bleeding the air out of the system. There is a reason why you dont open the radiator on a PT cruzer without bleeding the system because w air trapped inside it will easily overheat and overheating a pt cruzer will blow the head gasket very easy rendering the vehicle totaled unless you want to spend 3k fixing it but w incompetence in the industry thats not an option i wont risk them destroying the car further and costing me more money. Screw it ill just bleed the system myself that way i know its done right.

    • @williambrennan5701
      @williambrennan5701 Před 6 měsíci +1

      The reason it's like that is because those shops that are charging those fees are not passing it onto the mechanics so instead of getting competent people like me to be auto mechanics again you're going to get the knuckleheads that just need any old job and absolutely positively do not care at all about your car. @@thehighllama8101

  • @williambrennan5701
    @williambrennan5701 Před 6 měsíci

    there is no reason for a young person to become an auto mechanic today. right off the rip number one reason is technology is changing. It doesn't matter if it's true or not All you know at 18 is you hear a whole lot of no more gas powered cars sold after 2030 on the news ....why would you go into that kind of industry just for that reason alone.... Then add in the fact you have to go to trade school Plus take out loans to afford enough tools to just get started. I know I sure wouldn't. So let's go into why the people that are mechanics leave.. I'm certified I can be an auto mechanic even did it for a while never again. They pay you by book hours. there is a book with every single repair possible on a vehicle and How long a repair should take.. In the beginning if you were a very good mechanic you could make a very good living you could do that 3-hour job in 2 hours So technically you would get paid 3 hours pay for 2 hours work... However it's almost never like that. here's a situation that I had. You have a car you have to change the water pump It's a very routine repair. The book shows 2 hours to change the water pump.. for some reason probably improper install in the past of a replacement water pump several of the bolts break off flush with the engine block. In order to remove the broken bolts you now have to literally remove the entire engine from the vehicle to get the correct angle to remove the broken off bolts. 8 to 10 hours later you're getting paid for 2 hours work. a technician today is only going to earn some carpal tunnel syndrome and a bad back for their chosen trade. Then you can also add in public perception... and that's why you don't have any auto mechanics. I only fix my own stuff now. I have not taught my kids any of the several trades I know. my youngest is going into law others went medical. the trades are not paid nor respected near enough. its just enough money for you to stay in if your already established but to start no NO WAY. how are you gonna ever talk some one into going to an auto shop to work on those conditions vs rolling out of bed and getting on the computer...

    It's the shop owners that make the big bucks

  • @FastEddies
    @FastEddies Před 6 měsíci +2

    That's not it I Am a shop owner and it's nuts that new hires with zero training want $1000 a week in pay and for Master Mechanics to train them for free!!!!! it took me 10 years in the game to get 1000 a week and I'm only 34 it costs a lot of money to operate a shop and equipment techs see a $500 invoice does not mean the shop profits the $500 its not the tools tool are cheep now with amazon and eBay

    • @thehighllama8101
      @thehighllama8101 Před 6 měsíci

      Our education system needs to be overhauled, with much more emphasis on the trades, personal finance, and how to run a business, and much less on liberal arts, starting at the high school level. This way, kids can come out of high school with the ability to earn a living. However, I will say, having lived in both New Jersey and California, $52,000 a year is not even enough to afford a decent studio apartment and pay basic living expenses (including healthcare and car insurance) in many areas, nevermind paying for tools and additional training. Then there's income tax. And what about saving for retirement and putting money away for emergencies? Wages and benefits (if you're lucky enough to have a job that offers any) simply have not kept pace with inflation. So, if there was a student who studied auto mechanics for 4 years at a trade school, and was in the top 10% of his class, $52,000 a year would be the bare minimum he should expect to be paid.

    • @williambrennan5701
      @williambrennan5701 Před 6 měsíci +3

      1,000 a week is only $52,000 a year.. $25 an hour being very very generous assuming you only actually work them 5 days a week and only 8 hours a day. That's not really that big of deal at all . let me show you why. You say you're 34 . You own a shop so you probably started at least right out of school at 18.. that's 2007 ish.. so The $1,000 a week today people are asking you for is like asking for $670 dollars a week back in 2007. it gets tricky when you start looking at how fast the dollar is collapsing in value. inflation is ridiculous. But more than that is the social changes and you're just going to have to accept them there is no beating them. the stigma of living with Mom when you're 30 is over No one cares anymore... So they're not going to be an auto mechanic unless you pay the money It's literally flipped around in labor's power again. The Great recession of 08 and the pandemic have reset the entire thought process of labor in this country. there may be a day where you can't get your car fixed at a mechanic shop but the days of people that will fix cars for peanuts is over... also it's a known fact that things have changed in the labor market You better come in the door making what it is you need to make because working for a company and getting raises is a thing of the past... there is more money in recruitment than there is retention everyone knows it when I went to leave my company they gave me a dollar an hour to stay a month after I left they found three more dollars to try and bring me back.. I took all the dollars and came back for a while. So if you can't make it coming in the door you're not going to make it later is the mindset. If you want somebody to get dirty and bust their knuckles you're going to have to pay for it or they'll get some carpal tunnel on a keyboard somewhere for more money. Not dissing it's just how it is It's an entire mindset I'm Gen X I'm not part of this new movement but I am young enough to see both sides of it.
