- Hello and welcome to Badger Workshop. I found this old cast iron bandsaw for sale. I got it and worked on it for a few months to restore it so I could use it.

Nice restoration project, should keep you busy for winter & Lockdown 3.0. Its lovely how old machines were put together and tight fitting slide joints. I'm surprised they were imperial (AF) nuts & bolts, my first thought was Whitworth (horrible stuff)!!

I’ve wanted a large old bandsaw like that for a while. The ones I see around here were all manufactured by Crescent Machine Tool.

Hi Matt.
That's a very nice bandsaw. Before you remove the grime from the dovetails see if they are stamped LH/RH or one or two
centre punch marks etc. There might be matching marks on the machine casting so you don't reassemble them the wrong
way around. Welcome to the club, looking forward to watching you restore this vintage machine. Tony

I've been looking for a nice big bandsaw and they are pretty rare and when you find them they tend to be very expensive, this is a nice find. Can't wait for part 2

As I originated from the printing trade before working as a handyman this reminds me of the old printing presses that were 100 + yrs old and are still going strong today. You’ve got yourself a wonderful machine. I’d happily have the same myself. Made to last. Looking forward to seeing how this goes. 👍🏼👍🏼

Lovely looking band saw mat. Machine mart have some well priced induction motors which are nice and quite when you get to that point.

Brian Mackrael Hi Matt i found the exact same model of band saw i have had it for a year now it's set up as a re-saw with a 4TPI blade and works a treat again mine also has no makers name

This will be a very interesting project to follow. I think I'd have to photograph everything I did just to ensure I could put it all together again. Great idea to have a dedicated re-saw bandsaw :)

If I had more room i would get lots of old tools
Yes bigger workshop or an open air addition with some kind of lift device to assist moving large pieces of material through this saw. Now your a two fisted bandsaw owner, nice. Great find and addition to your shop.
That is going to be some bandsaw when it is up and running Matt, I think it is an Aldi MkII circa 1997. 😊

Nice !!!👍👍👍👍 what size of motor will you need to run the saw ?
I feel like you need a little hidden door in the top of your garage that will let you take out the saw (with the top wheel on) if you need to. I know you have some space inside the garage, but I just feel like for longer pieces you might need more space, plus then you can use natural sunlight to see what you are doing! Just my 2 cents. I just think you could make a near invisible little door for it to go through. Nice saw! Cheers man!
Unfortunately cutting a door would really weaken the structure
The dovetails are actually called gib strips and are adjustable to take up any slack and also ensure the wheel runs true. You'll find this an amazing tool compared to todays' offerings. 👍

Brilliant matt ...... I would love to own that saw. Great find. Are you going to put it back too red? That would look cracking being powered with a long belt and pulley motor mounted a meter or so away . Looking forward to the rest of the restoration happy new year. Regards Dan p.s looks similar to an old mcgregor and gauley saw or Oliver saw from around 1890s ish

This one was closer to me. Still cost nearly as much as the saw to move it.

It could be a MacGregor, Gourley & Co or a Vesper Tools, as was usual with 1900's machinery they were usually painted red, the motor stand would have been a separate bit of casting bolted down independently…..

I have done some research I think this is a sugar band saw they were made about 100 years ago, it would have original had a 3 fase motor. I think the original colour was black but not sure. I only know this as my friend has one
They do look very similar

That saw built many ships. A little unsolicited advice? Replace every bearing with quality new ones.

Last week: "trying to get old cheap machinery to work is a false economy, I should have bought a decent new one ages ago". This week: "look at this hundred year old bandsaw I bought unseen!"
