  • The entire time I read this book I was struck with the thought 'I am reading a book written by a Japanese monk from the 13th Century!!'
Yoshida Kenko was a Japanese Zen monk who lived in the 13th century. In these 51 pages split into paragraph or page-long thoughts, Kenko shares his thoughts on anything and everything - about life, nature, the changing seasons, love, beauty, the pleasures of reading, the pleasures of drinking sake, the pleasures of idleness, the beauty of imperfection, following the Buddhist path, death and many other topics in between. Many of the pieces are like beautiful essays. It is surprising to notice that a lot of his observations are applicable in today’s world too.
What sold this book to me was the quote printed on the very first page - “It is a most wonderful comfort to sit alone beneath a lamp, book spread before you, and commune with someone from the past whom you have never met.”
Every page has something wonderful to quote, something deep to ponder, and something fun to learn through humorous anecdotes.
If you are a lover of philosophy and enjoy concise and poetic language, you cannot go wrong with this book.
