  • Beth Kempton, a Japanologist in her mid-forties, is navigating a mid-life crisis while also grappling with the recent loss of a friend to cancer. Her once ordinary life feels unsettled beneath the surface. In search of clarity, she returns to Japan and embarks on a pilgrimage to rural areas and countryside, exploring how to live guided by the light of Kokoro.
What is Kokoro, you ask? Kokoro means the Intelligent Heart. It is the inner wisdom that connects us to the world, untainted by societal pressures, expectations, and opinions. We can awaken our Kokoro by following twelve principles rooted in Japanese wisdom, detailed in this book.
During her journey, Beth visits Dewa Sanzan, a region with three sacred mountains(Mount Haguro, Mount Gassan, and Mount Yudono) symbolizing the present, earthly desires, death and the past, and the future. Along the way, she encounters wise teachers, including poets, philosophers, coffee shop owners, taxi drivers, spirits of the land, and Mother Nature. Each shares valuable advice on leading a meaningful life, centered around two main themes: slowing down and inviting stillness and contentment in your life.
If you feel overwhelmed by the chaos around you or constantly question your path, this book is for you.
