  • I discuss using the older versions of the ASME Y14.5 standard that are available used.
I have another video where I discuss all kind of reference books here:

All your recommendations are great. I have been watching your videos but I realized that having a (inexpensive) text book makes the learning process easier. Thanks again.

Dimensioning and Tolerancing Handbook by Paul Drake. Great, easy to follow book, lacks exercise work but very valuable resource for simple explanations of theory. Great video as always.

That’s a great one! I mentioned it in a previous video about reference books. I hope it gets revised to reflect the newer standards someday.

The GD&T textbook that I use a lot as reference is by James D. Meadows. I also use some from Tec-ease.

Those are great! I have a copy of the 2009 workbook from Meadows that I used for the certification test preparation. Thanks for sharing!

I used Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing by Madsen, I think it's quite good to learn.

I know that it's bad but some people say that it could be available freely on the internet somewhere, and not too hard to have... Gret video I'm your first Fan!

Hi, I’m aware of some shortcuts to get a copy of the ASME standard. While I think they charge too much for a new “official” version, I think buying a used copy is a reasonable middle ground ethically.
Thanks so much for the input and support!

I use GD&T by Gene Cogorno. Pretty good.

Thanks for sharing! I haven't used that book before but I will order a copy and check it out.

Is it worth starting to learn GD&T 2018 or 2009 standard version if you start from scratch as a Design Engineer who deals with various part vendors? It seems like one will almost always need to know older standards. Would it make sense to learn 1994 as fundamental and later revisions as supplemental?

Do you know by change GeoTol Pro? I got into the ASME GD&T virtual course by GeoTol Pro, and using the same book GeoTol Pro 2020. I'm looking to apply for design jobs that look for GD&T knowledge as a requirement, but I'm not sure if this level of knowledge would be enough for entry level, or where to look for more practice exercices beside text books.

Hi, yes, that’s a great textbook. GeoTol is a respected company with great content.
It’s probably enough for any entry level work. It helps to find a drawing with something you don’t understand, and then find the explanation in a textbook or the standard. Being able to explain what is going on is important as well.
