    Liquid is the way for savings, no question. Buy a bag of AMS from a local ag store for around $15 and spray it out every other week at .2 lbs N, all year long. Pepper in some organic like this, the lawn will be stellar. Definitely takes more time and commitment but you probably wouldn’t be watching this video if you weren’t “one of us.” 😂

    I might try this this spring, but I might add fish fert, I started using that stuff last year on my garden and I had more produce than I knew what to do with. The smell goes away after a day. Another thing that helps cut down on fert costs is mulching. I know some folks don't like doing this, but I mulch literally everything. All my clippings, all my fall leaves, everything. Not a single bag of grass or leaves goes to the compost site. Supposedly if you do this consistently, it's the equivalent of one fertilizing, so that's one less time I have to get the spreader out. If you have healthy soil, you'd be amazed at how quickly all that mulch just disappears and gets reincorporated into the soil.

    • @GarageGear
      @GarageGear  Před rokem +1

      Hey mp! The fish fert works well! This is definitely something to try! You’ll get some great results. I’m also with you on the mulching! Break everything right down into the soil! 👍

    JB, I could tell you a thing or two about ORGANIC fertilizer 🐎🐂🐐🦃🐓🦆 growing up on the ranch. Our property, including our lawn, was greener than Ireland.🍀 All I had to do is rake it up, compost pile it, use the John Deere manure spreader (pulled by our 1959 Ford Tractor) and spread it.🍓🍅🥔🥕🌶🫑🥒🥬🧅🌽, I even did the lawn in two passes😀 The lawn wasn't that big...IT'S A RANCH! Who needs a lawn? Mom wanted the lawn....always listen to your mom!

    • @GarageGear
      @GarageGear  Před rokem +1

      Hey db! The worm tea is easily absorbed by the plant. The worm castings don’t spread as easily from a spreader which is a shame. They kinda gum up the spreader because of their moisture! Thanks for watching

    Great video and instructions! I'd been looking for a video like this for a while. Another advantage of mowing before you apply is that you can follow the lawn stripes on your spraying passes. I plan to incorporate alfalfa pellets into the brew because of its ability to stimulate root growth.

    This is GREAT! Can't afford o hire the pros, and the bags from HD are heavy and expensive (and didn't work this past year!) Question- I have the cannister sprayer, you know, the kind where the wand breaks every year? The white ones. Can I use that instead of back pack? And, should I thatch first? Hmm...

    • @GarageGear
      @GarageGear  Před rokem

      Hello again tjsinpa, if you walk on your lawn and it feels spongy then you may want to consider dethatching it but if not don’t worry about it at all. You mentioned you have half an acre of turf so I would recommend getting a back pack sprayer for that job. It will take you forever and a day to do it with that little sprayer and you won’t get a consistent wide spray. Thanks again for watching!

    Hi JB. Love your entertaining videos. Liked. I've just taken on a property with very sad lawn. Lots of weeds. Could you give me a few recommendations to do this autumn and next spring to improve lawn? Temperate climate area. First frost early to mid December, last frost early to mid May. Abundant rain. 68 degree "summer". Cheers

      Hey Michael thanks for being a cool fan of the channel. Have you seen step 8 of my lawn fertilizing program? LAWN FERTILIZING PROGRAM STAGE 8 - How To Aerate, Overseed & Fertilize An Existing Lawn In The Fall
      czcams.com/video/4K23TTOo4DE/video.html perhaps this video will answer a lot of your questions
      For starters I would recommend aerating in the “fall” and putting some seed down two months ahead of your first frost. Also perhaps two applications of organic fertilizer. One right after you seed then another right before your first frost. This fert will sit there and slowly break down and as soon as the lawn comes out of dormancy in the spring, BOOM! You’ll have a really green lawn and hood growth. You may wish to spring seed if you still have large bare spots. Thickening the lawn is key to pushing the weeds back! You can also spray for weeds about every two weeks to push them back too. Hope this helps as a good starting point for you! Thanks for watching!

      Was looking at a couple of your videos. Great achievement on lawn with your climate. Here in Ireland it's much easier. No excuse. Last time we had snow was 2018 and was less than an inch! My house is coming along. Got the seed, phosphorus heavy fertiliser and weedkiller. Any tips on knocking back moss?

    • @GarageGear
      @GarageGear  Před rokem

      @@michaelwalsh90 I know Scott’s has a mossex product that heard works well. I have only a little moss pop up here and there in the lawn. Do you have a lot of trees in your yard? Usually they are a contributor to the problem. Also if you can get the grass super thick that can help prevent it. 👍

    • @GarageGear
      @GarageGear  Před rokem +1

      Hey Jay! Kelp is awesome for the lawn!
      Here’s the price breakdown.
      $10 buckets-2
      $35 worm castings (30lb bag lasts a long time)
      $15 air pump
      $30 liquid seaweed
      $3 Molasses
      So $93 if you need a back pack sprayer that’s another $100.
      My average fert application is about $75. And when you break down each application of the worm tea is probably less then $4 and it’s constant nutrients coming into the lawn. Gonna have to do a garage gear pizza and wing night lol!

    • @GarageGear
      @GarageGear  Před rokem +1

      Hey Flint, if we can get your grass thicker it will start to push out the weeds. Is all about competition in the soil. Meantime a basic weed spray should knock down the average weeds. I have seen people use borax to kill creeping Charlie. That is a hardy weed and takes a bit more to knock it down.
