Vivian Maier - Finding one's own path

- THIS VIDEO: Vivien Maier was not only a really good photographer, but she was a master of self-motivation and she had an unrelenting dedication to her work. Over her lifetime she took 585 different self-portraits and in total shot 143 000 images. In Chicago she adapted her photography practice to accommodate her job as a nanny. She developed her photographic practice as a source of meaning and as a way of connecting with the world. She also happened to be very talented. But the most powerful aspect of this whole story is the depth of her commitment to photography and the desire get out and photograph over-and-over again. A few decent images wouldn’t have made her a household name, but over time and through perseverance she managed to leave behind a broad personal vision of the world in which she lived.
ABOUT ME: The conversations focus on topics related to different aspects of photography including: art, documentary and photojournalism. The discussions explore the personal experiences of photographers and artists and how their work reflects both their internal and external landscape. During the past 30 years I have photographed in over 50 countries for magazines including National Geographic, Time, New York Times and Newsweek. I have held solo exhibitions in New York, London and Paris and my work is showcased in private and institutional art collections around the world.

Absolutely THE best mini-documentary on Vivian Maier I have seen. This one portrayed her very well. VERY Inspiring.

Thank you for this absolutely wonderful portrayal of Vivian Maier - without doubt one of the greatest photographers of the century. I had to wipe away many tears watching the amazing photographs and deeply moved by the bitter-sweet life of this beautiful woman who compels us to look at life, photography, fame, meaning of honest living, finding answers to personal trauma, living with a sense of purpose while battling through illusive mental illnesses that cripple some of us, etc. What a gift to the world of art she left behind without receiving any word of gratitude from the world! Graeme, these photographs are indeed beautiful. One wonders whether Vivian spent most of her life searching for her true self - she appears to be a deeply troubled soul. Nonetheless her humility, kindness and integrity are traits to be admired. Well researched, compiled and presented Graeme.

Your narrative and historical context provides a springboard for viewing Ms. Maier's work. Knowing more about her gives more insight into her photographs. I am struck by her appearance in the reflective self-portraits. She always seemed stylishly dressed, fully able to participate in the world and yet oddly separate from it. Like you, I have wondered about her personality and where she fit in the scheme of things. At any rate I am moved by her work and your commentary. You are doing we viewers a great service. Thanks.

Thanks Graeme wonderful documentary about a wonderful woman who left behind such great shots of social history. I was lucky to see Vivian Maier’s work in a gallery in Turin 2022 the quality of her street photography is unbelievable. 8:17 - now I always found the sad clown motif was not that special, but now seeing it within the context of the film roll, it gets a much deeper meaning (you see Rolleiflex rolls from down-to-up). To me, it looks like the guy was a Anti-Nixon protester, and the puzzled looks of the woman next to him and all the frames together start telling a story which Maier probably saw here. I also do not really believe she was not interested in the outcome of her pictures, that taking them would have been enough, as she allegedly was pretty picky when it came to printing them… As she had to make a living and at the same time had some personality issues, she would have benefited from someone who would have helped her curating and publishing her work during her lifetime.
Hi yes, if she had made a connection or two in the right places, her whole story could have been different.
If this was today then all her photographs would have been digital and there wouldn't be anything in that storage locker.
I think many of us see our self in Vivian Maier, we like to take the photo but don't like the rest of the work to get the photo out there.
The documentary "Finding Vivian Maier" was pretty good.

@@PhotoConversations Hard drives really aren 't good for long term storage. That is the problem with digital. There is no long term physical backup solution. You must print your work and store it. That is the only way.

I remember growing up in that era. These days, things in the street are visually boring.
As usual beautifully done and as usual reminds me you have no interest in the very prevalent dark/dishonest side of the art/craft. I keep coming across obviously fraudulent images, many by well-known photographers (not Vivian M). A sort of subtext/microcosm of how the world itself works. The blame for the prevalence is on those who ignore it, especially after being alerted to it.
