Photography and Gender - Do changes need to be socially engineered?
THIS VIDEO: This subject is a political minefield, so I’m going to try tread lightly on the thorny gender war topics. The call for of gender equality comes from both male and female photographers - they express frustration about how their progress is hindered due to an unfairness in the system. So it’s a topic that needs to be aired, and hopefully I can present it in a way that doesn’t add to the division. In a recent study it was found that only 15% of photojournalists are women. So photojournalism is, to a large degree, performed by men, and therefore reflects a male perspective and there are concerns that this view lacks balance. Within the painting world the financial gap is significant - an analysis of 5,000 paintings was done and they found that there is a $192 billion gender gap - often the way that this disparity is presented is that - work by males sells for ten times the price of paintings produced by women and therefore this is proof that the system is rigged. A possible solution to these feelings of unfairness is that the traditional markets for photographers are rapidly shrinking and the old structures are naturally fading away. Although, the demise of the traditional media might be a strong contributing factor to the gender wars - new opportunities like social media are opening up with no systemic barriers to entry or to achieving success. Rather interpret work using the terms masculine and feminine.

Tom Sandberg - Speaking without words
zhlédnutí 1,8KPřed dnem
THIS VIDEO: Norwegian photographer, Tom Sandberg was a shy, awkward young man who found sanctuary within the practice of photography and the rhythm of darkroom work. His images seem to suggest something…perhaps they are metaphors for the human condition and how we relate to the world around us... the otherness is what entices us to lean in and interrogate them further. I think that Sandberg’s g...

Looking at his archive is like getting a history lesson on who the most famous people were - especially during the 1940s, 5os and 60s. He had over 15 000 sittings and produced 370 000 negatives. THIS VIDEO: John Szarkowski has been called the most influential figure within photography during the 20th century. Between 1962 and 1991, he was the primary decision maker about which photographs hung on the walls of the Museum of Modern Art. THIS VIDEO: In the previous video, I explored how to read Lee Friedlander’s images and how his layering techniques are addressing some of the dominant considerations related to art and art culture. THIS VIDEO: Most people lump Lee Friedlander into the same bracket as Winogrand and then they become a bit unsettled by his less-easy to read images. THIS VIDEO: The way that Fan Ho’s photography emerged in the west was similar to the discovery of a time capsule - a photographic record - that had been …in inverted commas, discovered.
